Last Light

Last Light

I was first attracted to Last Light for its art style, which is absolutely beautifull. For somebody who does not like horror type of games this one really made want to unlock all the achievement (still one to go). So without spoiling anything this is my short review score:

Art: 10/10

Story: 9/10

Difficulty: 7/10

Scare factor: 9/10

It took me 3 hours to go through the first playthrough (took so long because I was scared). To unlock all other achievement, except for one (where are you third floor director!!!) it took me another 10 hours as I did not use any playthrough or guides.

I really enjoyed this game! Only played through it once so far but going to go through it again and try to 100% it next time. My biggest criticism is that the keyboard controls are very frustrating when you’re trying to run away from enemies. I haven’t tried with a controller yet, hopefully it’s easier with that.

Something to NOTE! This game has the following elements that might be an issue for some when playing: occult themes, lots of blood, body horror, bullying/harassment, medical equipment, dead bodies, multiple text descriptions of violence, and two text descriptions of animal abuse. Much “lighter” than most horror games, but please take it into consideration before playing.

Lil Big Invasion

Lil Big Invasion

Awesome indie game with way enough content to fit the bill. Its kinda like Pikmin except they are trapped in dungeons and you must find and rescue them.

Really loved the sound and the art-style. Dungeons are getting way harder and better later on and the boss fights are fun. It took me some time to get used to the controls tho. Exploration is great IF you figure out how the moths and the worms do work… which is not part of the tutorial :/

It’s cute but challenging and worth the money.

This is a fun little action adventure game, developed by my former colleague Andreas. It’s so cute, but challenging ‘til the last minute and the sounds are really funny, even if the little fireflies sometimes don’t behave as you want them to. But that’s the trick of the game and you’ll soon know how to handle them right in order to crack some highscores. Overall, an awesome game!

The Story Goes On

The Story Goes On

**NOTE

This review was written back in June, months before I was hired onto the staff as an official dev. Everything down below I’ve written from a non-biased, early-access perspective and will remain unchanged.**

If you like top-down hack’n’slash type games such as the original Zelda games or random maze generated gameplay like in the Binding of Isaac, then this may tickle your fancy. The Story Goes on [Although Currently in Early Access] is a fun-fast paced game with hidden secrets and unique items.

Real player with 65.3 hrs in game

Due to an undying love for arcade, indie, dungeon crawlers and HnS games I unashamedly asked the dev for a key so I could try this game out and review it. Nobody was hurt in the process. But here’s the thread so you know.

Check TL;DR at bottom of review if this is too long for you.

The past few days have been spent milling around inside this squeaky clean indie game with a handful of baddies and critters, all of us sort of gliding from dungeon to dungeon in a place deemed a maze and called by the rather grandiose name of, The Odyssey. Having realised there must be some sort of lore, it felt essential to plop on my deerstalker cap and produce some yummy Googley searches. The results were thankfully plump lore of where we are introduced to our main protagonist, seven year old Aidan. Of our four diversly skilled characters (three of which you unlock through hidden puzzles), Aidan is the one you’re stuck with in the beginning. A trifle “young” for my taste, I only played him a few times before moving onto my favourite and more recent addition to the team, Gambit the Void Slayer (flailing his ninja arms back in true Naruto fashion will confuse your sense of direction in the beginning, plenty of in-game references to many other delightful characters like this). But more on that later since the story goes on (couldn’t resist the chance pun). On one fateful night Aidan’s brother tells Aidan the tale of their grandfather, a man whose thirst for hidden riches takes him to a mystical place called the Odyssey where it is said treasure buried deep in the dungeon awaits those brave enough to search for it. It is a treacherous maze of the Scar, a gang of thieves operating under a dark leader Staz. Thirty years passed and to this day nobody knows what happened to their grandfather, seemingly lost forever in the depths of this strange world. In hindsight the current EA version of this game at the time of writing this review doesn’t implement this lore much and stays bromidic in-game. Where there is a story if you want it, it doesn’t suffice as a form of narrative within the game itself. Players are greeted by the trusty shopkeeper, Bob who offers hints and helpful in-game factoids to ease any progression difficulties for the newbie or aid unlocking secrets. This lessens the feeling of emptyness of hearing your own voice echo against the walls of the maze.

RPG World - Action RPG Maker

Where to begin? Diablo meets Disney, Never Winter Nights meets Legoland. This game is great on so may levels.

Whether you like playing action RPG’s or you like to craft worlds/scenarios for your friends to enjoy, Single player, multiplayer, PVP, World editor.

I can honestly say I’ve not found a game that appealed so much in a long, long time. Mostly it is FUN. Fun to build, fun to play. Challenging if you’re a serious mayhem seeker, entertaining if you just like to explore.

Since I wrote the above the game has received a steady stream of upgrades in terms of new buildings, props, collectables, choosable theme music, new npcs and enemies, a brilliant character creator so you can build your own npc’s and enemies from a huge range of body parts and AI’s, upgrades to questing making it much easier to control the flow of play. The dev’s have been seemingly tireless in their dedication to fulfilling the game’s early promise.

NOTE: This review is written while the game was in Early Access at 25th of april.

You know, I’ve always been a person who likes to build stuff. That’s why I LOVED to play with LEGO. I used to build all kinds of stuff. Cars, buildings…whatever I preferred, as long as I knew how the pieces connected to eachother. Because how hard is it to build a tower when you don’t know how your tools and bricks work? That would be a mighty challenge even for master builders…

The hobby of building things kind of continued when I started playing video games, so I bought a game like MyWorlds before called Fight the Dragon. That game had an amazing level editor with lots of tools to play with, including a lot of ‘‘invisible’’ mechanisms like triggers and such. Unfortunately that game is suffering a slow and silent death due to lack of players, which brought me back to the quest of finding a game where I could express my fountain of imagination.
