Pirates Outlaws is a roguelite deckbuilder where the player is the captain of a pirate ship in search of fame and fortune, and must fight against Human pirates, skeletons, ghosts and monsters. The game mechanics will be very familiar to anyone who played other games in the genre such as Slay The Spire or Neoverse, although of course Pirates Outlaws has its own unique twists.

Combat Mechanics

Combat is turn based, with the player’s actions being represented by the cards drawn into their hand, and you’ll see what action each enemy intends to take on their turn. Melee attacks can only target the enemy closest to the player (unless the card says it damages all enemies) but are usually free to play. Ranged attacks can target any enemy but they cost ammo to play. Other cards can give the player armour (which can be carried forward to the next turn), restore health, apply status effects to the player or enemies, change the position of an enemy, or have other special effects.

This game looks and plays like a pirate skinned Slay the Spire, and well, that is pretty accurate and not a bad thing either. It does mold and craft its own unique image in both the style and gameplay. Some of the game design choices would actually make me think it is more of an Anti-Slay-the-Spire at times as it makes deliberate design decisions to stray from the path of its inspiration.

While you can craft some pretty OP builds still, it can be a lot harder to achieve some of the broken builds of stacking poison to 999 or such - largely because the status system in this pirate game is quite different. Only one status is allowed to be active at a time. So if your enemy is poisoned, they can wipe their poison stacks clean by buffing their self with an attack increase. Because buffs can erase debuffs and vice versa. However, this goes for the player too. There is even a boss battle that will absolutely wipe the floor with you if you don’t have some kind of way to buff yourself. He will keep raising your injury (this game’s version of poison) stacks on you and they will just get higher and higher unless you wipe it with a buff. Not much different than how Slay the Spire bosses can hard counter some of your decks. But at the same time it is just different and feels unique. I wasn’t so sure about the status system at first but it grown on me quite a bit. Which I think brings me to the next major difference.

This is very close. Another game I wish I could give a neutral rating.

Its a push your luck card drawing game with each suit triggering a different mechanism and along with your traits you can combine them in to more or less devestating attacks in order to collect cards that bolster your score.

Contrary to some of the reviews Ive seen nothing to suggest that the AI is cheating, it does pull off some last minute nasty moves at times but keeping my cool I can think back to the many times I have done the same thing. How much this actually matters is debateable, if the game makes you feel like it is cheating then whether it is or it isnt, the frustration is always real. I think this will be the biggest sticking point for most people, at first it may not be quite so apparent but as things go on you will see through to the luck component of the game increasingly easily and more and more you will feel robbed by complete chance regardless of how well youve played a hand.

I really enjoyed this game, the rules are really simple to pick up, it’s fun to play, the characters are memorable and consistent in ‘who they are’ with the trait combos they use. The AI is really good and not overly cheaty, there were a couple of times I thought you wouldn’t keep drawing like that or you’d have had to have known that card was there to have carried on or to have played that card, but this didn’t happen often enough to make it a concern. It is incredibly fair the majority of the time.

The best designed autobattler by far. Minimal RNG that can be easily mitigated with good play, extremely good balance between the factions (every faction can truly beat every other faction) and the developers are lightning fast in taking aboard feedback and correcting any issues with the game. For anyone who likes this genre of games, this is a must play.

I love this game, i played it back when it was a beta mode in another card game they had, then decided to make it its own standalone game which is awesome. Used to be extremely buggy and barely playable. Although. as time went buy the developers would listen to their players and fix all the bugs and stabilize the game. Which made this game amazing and really fun to play. Constant updates and they love hearing suggestions and taking them to consideration.

How to play

You will start each game selecting three VIPs, each with their own unique special skill. After you select your VIP, you start your run. Whenever you start a run, you’ll choose how many villagers you use to collect resources like wood, food, and gold. The villagers drop resources at your treasure wagon and look for new sources automatically throughout the run.

When the gate opens, you will enter the procedurally generated lands of the Red, where you’ll need to get as far as you can in order to claim the best rewards. Venture further and further and more secret rewards and treasure will be granted.

You’ll have VIPs such as King Midas who has the ability to turn enemies into gold, the Viking, a dragon-summoning Nordic god, Blackbeard the pirate, ordering deadly cannonballs to obliterate enemies, or the Rocket Man with the power to land two rockets simultaneously on top of your enemies. These are just a few of the 25 VIPs that you’ll encounter along the way. More are planned and I’m looking to bring this number closer to 100.

There are big pirate armies that lie ahead of you, with bands of rebels hidden away in bushes and villages to slow your progress. Whether castles stand in the way or not, you will need to overcome the odds and create an army with the right mixture of units to counter the enemies ahead of you. Will you pick archers to mow down the slow infantry and risk them being charged down by cavalry? The choice is yours.

Once you finally get stopped, you’ll collect treasure and rewards, unlock, and upgrade more VIPs and return to the open gate once more.

So in short:

  • Select unique VIPs giving you strategic advantages.

  • Collect resources and build your army.

  • Take control of dragons and transform sheep into bloodthirsty warmachines

  • Win & lose big battles in your fight for loot.

  • Claim big rewards, unlock and upgrade new VIPs as you progress.

I started out wanting to create an RTS game for the Age of Empires fan inside me that doesn’t have the ability to sink hours into playing a game. The game is a bunch of quick fun runs, intertwined with big battles and resource gathering. On average, each run should take between 10 and 15 minutes.
