Concrete Jungle

Concrete Jungle

Allrighty, folks, we are looking at a gem that doesn’t even know what KIND of gem it is. Is it a strategy? Yes. Is it an Indie? Yes. Is it a Tetris-like game? Yes. Is it procedurally generated? Yes. Is it a Rogue-lite? Yes. Is it Ironman? Yes. Does it involve competition? Yes. Can you play it for hours and hours on end? YES!!!

I was absolutely surprised just how much the game did right. So, in true fashion, let’s take at the good and the Bad.

The Good:

1. Awesome AI. I love AI that can make my life a living hell. The AI will exploit your mistakes, take advantage of them, and crush you, rather than just hang back and let you feel all good for beating it.

I wish I could recommend this game. There is a lot of interesting potential that is wasted here. Unfortunately that’s what it does: waste your time and its own potential.

The “city planning” aspect of the game is purely cosmetic. There is nothing about this that relates to city building aside from the cosmetics. You could pallet swap this with any theme and it would still be a puzzle game. I feel thoroughly mislead that this has anything to do with city planning.

It’s also almost entirely multiplayer focused. The single player campaign is over before you even learn all of the mechanics. Any length you get from it is purely from replaying the same levels in an effort to get a better score.

Last Kingdom - The Card Game

Last Kingdom - The Card Game

A fun P Vs. E style deckbuilder very similar in style to this dev’s earlier released Business Wars but with some cool fantasy twists. A few of the innovative features:

  • The player at random intervals can earn a choice of boosters (a set of 3 thematic cards based on the chosen bestower). The player can see exactly what cards would be granted in the 3 pack before deciding.

  • Each round you choose between 2 castles, and the one not defended is lost passing onto the player a nasty side effect. So as your character and deck grow in power, you’ll have more and more of these passive curses to deal with.

What is this game about?

Can a 120 card deck work? Yes.

Last Kingdom - The Card Game is, obviously, a card game but what’s so different about it comparing every other roguelike deckbuilders? For starters, you can end up with over 100 cards in your deck so it’s definitely not your typical deck builder but let’s start from the very beginning.

Feudalia

Not a bad game for 2-3 evenings, but pretty bugged in some missions (some cards don’t work correctly).

I’m board game enthusiast. The game really has a “board game feel” to it. Never played the physical version, But it looks similar from videos I watched. In fact never heard of the game before it popped up in my suggestions. Love the deck building and resource management aspect. Not much reviews so far for the game.

Only still in the “tutorial” section (8 first missions). Like it very much so far…

Call me a dues-paying member of ‘The Cult of the New’ when it comes to genre mash-ups like this. I can’t get enough of them. When Slay the Spire came out and combined roguelites and deck-builders I was hooked for 100+ hours and even back in my pre-COVID table-top gathering days, deckbuilders (Dominion/Thunderstone) were my favorite. The combination of control and RNG is so delicious and it’s exciting to see all of the ways developers are using this in either quality design or just experimenting with a gimmick.

A very tentative recommendation. In terms of my play-time, I’ve completed most content (including wave 120), so I feel I’ve enough experience with the game to give a moderately informed review.

In a nutshell, this game is a very polished game that reminds me of my days playing free games in the heyday of flash. Take a Newgrounds defense game and add a massive layer of professionalism and that’s this game. You play a defense game where your units, economy, and development are linked to a deck built throughout a session. It is hard. You will lose a lot. But there will be an “ah-hah!” moment where you understand what the game wants from you and suddenly it will be rare to lose.

SOMEWHEN is a retro RPG inspired by early J-RPGs. Enjoy dungeon diving, resource gathering, and town building mechanics. In Somewhen, you must help Idyll and company restore a fractured world with an uncertain future using a curious time-travelling train and a little something called the Conductor to rebuild entire towns. Your goal is to quite literally reshape the future by placing homes, trees, and other structures in the present. Sky Tale

Sky Tale

A fun game to pick up and enjoy some nice hours in sandbox mode or try to get the highest points possible. Quite simple but still enjoyable overall.

The achievements are fun and challenging, but the windmill/wheat field one seems to be broken/wrong, as with all 8 wheats placed directly next to water tiles seems to never trigger a progress on the achievement itself.

Some polishing might be required, so that users can actually know how many resources there are on a tile (X rocks, X trees), how many resources are taken by each building (e.g. by hovering over the tile) and how many points you get at the end turn from certain buildings (houses)

sky tale is an islanders -like, so I’ll be making a lot of comparisons to it (you might want to check the link for my review). this one’s on a grid with a bit more to it than plonking down random buildings where they give you the most points. sadly, neither lets you re-visit previous islands without copying files over, and this only keeps the one currently in progress, not all your previous attempts like islanders. I was hoping they wouldn’t copy this aspect as well…

Kainga: Seeds of Civilization

Kainga: Seeds of Civilization

i previously did a hastily anger fueled review after losing my thinker to walking into the water and ending my game but after another 14 hrs can say nothing has changed and my thinker had died a few more time this way. The road map will be very delayed to add new content as alot of the games current content needs alot of bug fixes, i’ve never played a game with so many bugs early access or not i’ve played plenty of pre release games too with less bugs then this.

Do not buy until Dec/Jan and even then unless rolling in $ wait for a sale. the sheer amount of bugs and stuff that just doesn’t work will turn you off the potentionally great game

This game has so much potential but really needs to be balanced in order to stave off some real frustrations. The RNG aspect of the game really works against the player in most cases, and the enemy tribes start off ahead and are a real hindrance to get your tribe out of the mud. They attack or demand tribute almost immediately, and 9 times out of 10 despite how big the map is, you spawn right next to them. Aside from the tutorial there’s no “starting area” to get your feet wet and learn the game. One map has half of the inspiration areas inaccessible (including the inspiration that allows these areas to become accessible, the other map has hardly any resources, and if you don’t “draw” the right tech after inspiration, you’re screwed. Because of all of this, it took me 20 attempts to pass the first challenge. A third map is unlocked later, but is harder still.
