Card City Nights 2

Card City Nights 2

I was skeptical of buying this game because I don’t really like “casual” games, but I did enjoy the game despite it being filled with stuff that wouldn’t normally be to my taste.

The premise of the card system worked really well. The board positioning/countdown system sounded silly but was really interesting. There’s a careful balancing act between planning ahead for the space your going to need, crowding your opponent out, and getting down the powerful cards which are harder to hook to chains and make it harder to keep your chain momentum going. Unfortunately this is all scuddled by cards later in the game that are able to ignore all of this, and I haven’t seen a strategy that works better than spamming those cards over and over and I was able to cakewalk through the game once I figured that out.

Card City Nights 2 is unfortunately a much worse game in many ways than the first game.

The core gameplay is similar in many ways, with having to connect 3 cards together using the 8-way arrows on each cards. But the board is one large 6x3 board instead of each player having their own 3x3 board, and connecting the cards doesn’t immediately cause an action, but rather activates them, to do something in X number of turns.

There are definitely pros to the new game. Being able to place your cards directly in the way of the opponent is nice. The “spy” cards that have red arrows that connect to the opponent’s cards are very cool, and there’s some great balance with them (they often have powerful placement effects, but help your opponent create matches). There’s a lot of interesting possible combos you can do. Like powerful cards with no arrows, that have to be activated by other means. Or cards with great effects only WHILE active, which means you want to delay their turn timer as much as possible.

This game had some potential, but sadly the dev prefered to dump and go with this bare minimum of a game with poor translation

I’ve got the 1st round clear.

Good job, actually it is better than I expected.

The group making this game should then continue to modify the details to make it better.

UPDATED VERSION (March 2020)

Game has changed name from Starship Helmet, but same card style battles + campaign. No tutorial but clearer translations, so expect to jab at it for the first couple of games, it becomes obvious soon. Enjoyable.

Improved balance, campaign and new special weapons, plus crew that can improve cards.

At first glance the new graphics look worse.

Still a couple of Chinese parts. Easy to guess the meanings by jabbing at them. [In the original game entire cards might be in Chinese - seems fixed.]

Aeon’s End

Aeon’s End

If you want to try out Aeons End, or really prefer to play games digitally, it’s pretty good but brief. If you have all the physical base sets, expansions, and so forth, I don’t think you’ll be getting rid of them anytime soon for this (unlike, say, how Sentinels of the Multiverse is so good on digital that I’ll never play the physical edition again).

I won’t comment on game play and such, but there’s a decent tutorial that goes over most concepts (while letting players discover the synergies of the game themselves). There’s also currently no multiplayer for those who demand it (I suspect it’s in the works though), nor AI players either; one player controls all the mages' actions (although you could potentially do “pass and play” gaming). It’s a non-issue to me, but a determining factor for others.

My Biases: I backed this on kickstarter not because I have played the physical game but because I really like the developer and the game seemed to be very fun if their streams were any indication. I really enjoy the game from what I have done so far.

Aeon’s end is a cooperative deck builder game where up to 4 mages try to beat back monsters that seek to destroy humanity. The game is an uphill battle but certainly winnable. There are many ways to approach the battles and lots of variability depending on the mages and supply cards you use.

Erannorth Reborn

Erannorth Reborn

I’ll start with the base game itself and tackle modding later on in the review despite it being my favorite part of the game. While modding is a major focus of the game it’s not what you expect to be paying for right off the bat.

First up, gameplay. There is an open world game mode that I haven’t played much of (yet) and thus won’t be talking about. The core game mode is the rogue-like card-based rpg formula we’re all familiar with by now. There are a great deal of difficulties and game modes such as draft in the base game letting you have your own variety. These game modes will set you on a journey across Folkswave, the area of focus within the setting, where you will hopefully but almost certainly not find success. On this journey you’re certain to make friends, find loot, kill monsters, explore the unexplored, and generally have a great time.

Real player with 381.5 hrs in game

TLDR: Thumbs up for a very complex card battle game with rpg-like character customization and alot of depth. Though there is alot to learn from card text and tags, this game is an addictive hidden gem: 9/10.

This review is long because I was frustrated trying to learn about the game when I started. So I wanted to talk about what approach worked best for me.

At first the game felt linear, but there were so many abilities to discover that I didn’t mind it. Monsters are fairly diverse too as you move across stages. Plus there are events that give you choices. Eventually though it started to feel just a little repetitive, but that was only because I didn’t understand all the different game modes. Each mode has 3 tiers of difficulty so it’s easy to get locked into wanting to see how far you can survive through the tiers.
