World of One

World of One

I reviewed this for Two Credits. You can find the full review, the score I gave it, and some cool screenshots from my time playing here: http://twocredits.co/review/world-of-one/

Summary:

When World of One sticks to puzzles and dealing with enemies by avoiding them, a bright light begins to shine in its dark world. Puzzles are varied and many have multiple solutions. They are also surprisingly nuanced; simply solving some of them incorrectly will solve them, but it will also lead to your death. The experience falls apart a bit when it begins to focus on combat, but it should be noted that, despite that fact, I played through practically the entire game in one sitting, which took around seven hours, a testament to the fact that the game was still enjoyable long after the focus had shifted slightly. It’s a game that I wish had focused more on its puzzles, bringing back some of its mechanics in new and interesting ways more often, but one that still manages to remain interesting and present challenging puzzles throughout despite the fact that it does not.

World of One is a dark fantasy puzzle-platformer that reminds me Tim Burton’s work. Obviously, any black/white platformer gets compared to Limbo which really isn’t a good comparison beyond surface level features. It is not a bad game but I feel like toward the second half there is more frustration than fun (mostly do to poor hit boxes, combat, and time-consuming respawns) While I feel that game could be sufficient with few updates I was forcing myself to enjoy it.

The first Act focused primarily on puzzles, story, and platforming which was very enjoyable. I only died few times and felt like I was playing a casual, sinister looking puzzle game. Then it starts snowballing downhill almost to where I considered refunding it. In next few Acts, generic combat becomes a big part of the experience. Game has a lot of insta-death so you constantly replaying 2-4 minutes sections between checkpoints. I died at least 100 times to just poor visual hit boxes. The combat system gets really boring and just feels like a massive waste of time when you die in an unfair way.

One golden Rule i took für myself over all the Years playing Games is: Expect the Unexpected.

I still remember me, playing the first time RESIDENT EVIL going through the Floor when these damn Dogs crashed out of nowhere through the Windows.

That was my biggest Scarejump. That Game made Scarejumps very popular.

Over the Years there were many Games using Scarejumps and scary environments. Many MANY Games. From High Class Games to little Casual Games.

And this Game here is one little casual Game.

Not a bad little horror game for the cost. I generally hate games that rely on jump-scares but they were spread out enough here that it wasn’t too bad. A few little bugs but nothing crazy.

Note to Dev: At the 2:55 point in my video you can see where I got stuck in a room cause I closed a door and then couldn’t re-open it. Even loading from save the door stayed closed and I had to start over. Also at 7:55 you can see where I fell through the floor and died.

It’s peculiar, rough around the edges and a lot could be improved, but virtually everything about this feels more… Unique than most other horror games. It feels like the developer had a vision and didn’t mind taking a few risks.

You’ll go back and forth between your conscious and subconscious, completing puzzles, fighting off enemies, but you’ll also be intrigued, wondering what bizarre scenario will be coming up next.

It’s pretty cheap if you want to take the risk and try it out. If it isn’t for you, there’s always the refund option.

Noosphere has been on my Steam wishlist for about a month and it was time to try playing it. I have to say that I was not disappointed with the game even though I found a few minor bugs.

One time I even fell into textures and got stuck there for a while :/

But after restarting the game I never encountered this again.

Nevertheless I consider Noosphere to be a good enough psychological horror especially considering it’s indie.

My rating would be 8/10 screemers.

The forgotten phobia

The forgotten phobia

The forgotten phobia is another template flip style game from asset flippers/scammers, Piece of Voxel. This time it looks like they’ve ripped off a lazy 2D retro pixel template for a horror/adventure platformer game. Resolution and controls are locked and they used ugly retro pixel “art”, probably because that’s what the template they copied had. The game is in Russian and doesn’t appear to have any English translation, but the language of bad games and asset flip scams is universal.

An important note: Piece of Voxel are known asset flippers and have previously taken other developers work and put it on Steam in an attempt to scam gamers and get paid for someone else’s effort. An example of Piece of Voxel doing this is Hoples, which is really “Pixel Adventure 1 ”, written by the actual developers, Pixel Frog. Also, Top Truck Driver, which is really “Hill Racing Template ”, developed by Janko Knez.

Heres a review for this game as it is now released. As an early access user, I HIGHLY reccomend this game. This game is where you play as Kotel and you and your friends have to save Durka, the princess of Gigacrush. Despite the only gameplay is throwing rakes at things, that gameplay is fun and addicting. There are nine fun levels packed tight with enemies, platforming, and a ton of blocks filled with coins. Another thing is that this is really optimized for a game with this much physics goin on and has a bunch of settings for computers on both the high and low ends. This game is a hidden gem and recommend that you play it sometime

Wild Animal Racing

Wild Animal Racing

One day while I was home alone sitting at my computer browsing the steam store for another hentai puzzle game to play I saw this absolute work of art known as “Wild Animal Racing”, upon laying eyes on it I was instantly taken aback by its next-generation graphics and absolutely phenomenal soundtrack that I knew I had to buy it. After downloading the game and playing it for a while, I realized that the driving mechanics rival the likes of Forza, Assetto Corsa, and Mario Kart just to name a few. Along with the extremely diverse lineup of characters ranging from a giraffe that bleats to a hippo that moos, it also brought a tear to my eye with how surprisingly in-depth the story is, it tells the juicy and lore filled tale of Hugo(Formerly Henrietta) the purple hippo struggling with his gender identity [Source] and a racing addiction searching the lands far and wide for the answer to what he truly wishes to be, when one day Hugo(Formerly Henrietta) was out roaming the streets of Zig-Zag-Zog in his new race car when a giraffe by the name of Ginger approaches him and tells him that he can give him anything he wants and more so long as he beats him in a race. After some thought, Hugo(Formerly Henrietta) takes Ginger up on the offer and is quoted as saying “I’m the best racer there is, beating you will be a breeze!” and so Ginger laughs and says “Alright, meet me on the coastal island at 3:00PM and we’ll see how good of a racer you really are.” When the next day rolls around Hugo(Formerly Henrietta) meets Ginger at the coastal island to race, telling him that he will regret the day he dared to challenge him. When the race countdown ends and the cars takeoff Ginger starts by taking the lead with Hugo(Formerly Henrietta) just barely trailing behind. Worried he will lose and be unable to obtain the answers he so desperately seeks he pleads with the Gods themselves to help him win this race, and so like a miracle sent down from the heavens a floating “?” appears on the track right in front of Hugo(Formerly Henrietta), wondering what it is Hugo(Formerly Henrietta) bracing for impact tries running into it to see what becomes of the mysterious object, and to Hugo(Formerly Henrietta)’s surprise a button with a symbol resembling a rocket appears on his center console. Hugo(Formerly Henrietta) curiously presses it to see what the odd button did and to Hugo(Formerly Henrietta)’s surprise a Firework Rocket shot out the front of his car striking Ginger’s car in one of its back wheels causing it to spin out of control allowing Hugo(Formerly Henrietta) to take the lead. After recovering from the mysterious spin-out Ginger attempts to speed up and catch Hugo(Formerly Henrietta) before he can finish the race, but to no avail. Hugo(Formerly Henrietta) had already finished the race beating Ginger and gaining himself “anything he wants and more.” After the race Ginger approaches Hugo(Formerly Henrietta) and says, “While that spin out was rather peculiar, I am a man of honor so I will grant you what you seek.” following up with “But first, I’d like to invite you on a journey across the world so that you can race to your heart’s content.” Hugo(Formerly Henrietta) without hesitation agrees to join Ginger on the so-called “journey across the world” to see where it might take him. Their first stop is Giza, Egypt, racing around the Pyramid of Djoser. After winning the race Hugo(Formerly Henrietta) who came in first, says to Ginger, who once again came in second behind Hugo(Formerly Henrietta), “That was so much fun I’m glad I decided to go on this ‘journey across the world’. Where is our next stop?” Ginger, after some thinking, replies “We’ll race in Paris, then off to Holland!” Hugo(Formerly Henrietta), is excited for this next step in the journey and says “Let’s do it!” After arriving in Paris and going to the race they realize that they will also be racing against a lion, a zebra, and a rhino. Of course, this will be no trouble at all for Hugo(Formerly Henrietta) and Ginger, two of the greatest wild animal racers of all time. When the race ends Hugo(Formerly Henrietta) and Ginger once again win the race with Hugo(Formerly Henrietta) coming in first with Ginger just behind him in second. After they finish the race in pairs they immediately move on to the next and last step in the journey, Holland. Once again when they arrive at the track in Holland they see the lion, zebra, and rhino that they had met just before the previous race and are immediately overcome with joy knowing the race wouldn’t be a problem. So once again they win the race with Hugo(Formerly Henrietta) coming in first and Ginger just behind in second, solidifying their place as the world’s greatest racists.

The Shape On The Ground (Steam Edition)

As someone who’s done a fair bit of work with tarot in real life, I can see that the creators have a good grasp of the right sorts of prompts and questions to work with in divination. The environments and visual design are very nicely done too, and it’s clear that a lot of care went into them. They do an excellent job of building atmosphere and putting one in the right headspace. Overall, a very interesting experience, and well worth your time.

An interesting idea overall. Answering the question, walking around the map is pretty much everything, but that uncomfortably feeling that you are constantly being watched while answering what you see in this dark and strange imagery really has a great take on immersing player into this horror experience. Take a look at this title as an artistic horror experience, not a game. It’s short, and I’m definitely getting back to this title again in the future. In my opinion, a quite nice title to have in your collection, as an artistic psychological piece.

Underponder

Underponder

By design, one of the most cryptic games I ever played, but it does have a compelling psychological narrative if you are willing to overcome the moon logic. In the defense of the game, there are many creative and well-designed puzzles, but sometimes you are stuck for 2 hours, doing some excessive backtracking with limited visibility (assuming you can see at all). There is a section where I walked for like 20 minutes in complete darkness which should give you an idea of what kind of game it is. I completed the ‘normal’ difficulty around 15 hours (with no hints), and as far as I can tell the madness difficulty adds some new content. I was very close to rage quitting the game many times, but the curiosity got the better of me. It has a lot to offer in terms of psychological mechanics and how you interact with the puzzles, arguably more complex and thought-provoking than many games in the genre. Don’t expect puzzle logic, the hints will guide you maybe 25% of the time, there are many ‘leap of faith’ moments where you find things by accident.

Real player with 31.9 hrs in game

Underponder is a great puzzle and platformer game, the puzzles can be quite hard at times but when you try all the mechanics this game gives you they are definatly doable, altough it is nothing for the unpatient as you have to try out alot and really need to think outside the box. When finally finishing a level though it is quite rewarding with the sense of accomplishement.

The Atmosphere of the game is also amazing, from the sound to graphical choices up to the cutscenes it is a very thought through game and quite the accomplishement for being made by only one developer.
