Dark Existence

Dark Existence

BACKGROUND STORY

The year is 2036. You are a survivor living in an underground bunker alongside other survivors. The bunker is home to an organisation of scientists who conduct research and experiments on unknown phenomena related to the extinction event. It is your job to ensure that supplies are brought to the bunker as well as test subjects for the scientists to operate on. This requires going to paranormal sightings and capturing whatever objects or creatures you come across.

The world is full of these creatures and it is up to you and your friends if you choose to go with others, to make sure that you successfully capture one of them.

THE BUNKER

The underground facility where you currently live is classed as the ‘Multiplayer Hub’. All players spawn here together when hosting/joining a server. In the bunker, you will have the freedom to explore and investigate cases. You will also see the creatures that you have previously captured.

OLD MANOR ON THE HILL

One of the first places you will travel to from the bunker is the Old Manor, located a few hours away. There are reports of paranormal activity within the Old Manor from passing survivors. They have reported a strange figure staring out the window, and strange sounds coming from inside. You have been tasked to go inside and investigate the cause of this activity.

GAMEPLAY

In Dark Existence, you will play as a survivor who is trying to fix some of the damage made from the extinction event. You will be checking out places close to the bunker to see if anything of value can be resourced. Your main task however will be investigating paranormal activity which will involve a lot of stealth within dark and dangerous environments.

In the Old Manor, there is an old woman that has had her body taken over by an evil presence, she is smart, she can see very well. But she doesn’t hear very well. So stay out of sight.

As you work through the stages of investigating, you may find she becomes harder to evade. Discover her weakness. You must find a way to capture her, just be careful; she doesn’t react well to being hurt.

You can play alone, however, this is not recommended. You may play with up to 3 other friends that dare to enter the halls of hell with you. Look out for wardrobes, kitchen cupboards, anything with a door as you might just find something that will allow you to progress further.

GAMEMODES

  • Play Alone

A chapter-based singleplayer mode where you will play through the chapters of hellish nightmares.

  • Cooperative Solo

Deciding on helping out the world by yourself? You sure can, but bear in mind, this will be extremely challenging and terrifying alone. Grab a team.

  • Cooperative Mode

This would be the smart choice to make, play with up to 3 friends to help you, but don’t let your friend get you killed! Work as a team.

Story

You play as investigative journalist “Mr. Johnson” after receiving several tips of a government cover up at a recently abandoned psychiatric hospital. All reports suggest illegal experiments taking place on the patients of the facility- and supposedly a government cover up. Detective Johnson decided to go through with this one off-books and after just a few days of preparation he sets out to explore the abandoned facility in the middle of the night, to recover patient records.

2AM: You arrive at the scene, it is a gloomy and silent night. Rain is pouring, wind flows through the air as an unsetteling feeling kicks in. Something isn’t right here, but there is only one way to figure out what it is…

Gameplay

Insaniam is a first person survival horror game, your objective is to retrieve at least five patient records for the abandoned facility.

You’ll be forced to scavenge for batteries to keep your camcorder charged, utilize the night vision mode to explore the dark, use sanity pills or stay in the light to keep sane, avoid hallucinations, while something is lurking in the darkness and so much more.

Gameplay is based around a speed run mechanic where you’ll play for shortest time to escape or longest time survived. Randomized game mechanics keep this experience fresh and increases re-playablity.

The game is not story focused but there is underlying lore that is optional to explore through text, visuals or audio.

The Signifier Director’s Cut

The Signifier Director’s Cut

I was in love with this game at the start, but it went downhill for me as I played. I’m just BARELY not recommending it, but if you find yourself intrigued by the premise and gameplay, it might still be worth playing.

In The Signifier, you play as Frederick Russell, a scientist who is using AI technology to recreate memories (objective and subjective) from people’s minds, as well as dreams they’ve had. You’re tasked with helping to solve a murder (or was it a suicide?) by researching the victim’s last memories.

Summarized review below!

The rundown:

Pros:

  • First half of the story

  • Really cool visual direction

Cons:

  • Latter half of the story

  • Game-breaking bugs.

  • Numerous technical issues

We get quite a few of these psychological thriller walking sims each year. A lot of them bank on their visuals while slacking on the story. Rarely though, do we get a game like The Signifier, which seems to have both of those aspects on lock. At least, that was my initial impression.

Chinatown Detective Agency: Day One

Chinatown Detective Agency: Day One

‘‘There simply must be a corpse in a detective novel, and the deader the corpse the better.’’ - S.S. Van Dine

Chinatown, Singapore in the year 2032 - Amira Darma is the female protagonist operating her first day as a Private Investigator in a dystopian cybernoir world where she feels her detective skills can flourish outside of the financially crippled Criminal Investigation Department that she once worked for under the command of Superintendent Justin Koh.

“Chinatown Detective Agency - Day One” is a prologue for the main game due sometime in 2021, and gives a first impression of what to expect.

In short: I found the game to be interesting and it’s definitely got potential - hence my thumbs up. But it still needs some a lot of work.

The low-down

CDA is a retro-styled cyberpunk/noir-themed whodunit which plays much like a classic point-and-click-adventure with some light elements of life-sim and puzzle-games. From what I hear it is strongly inspired by the Carmen Sandiego-franchise with its chasing after clues and travelling to places all over the world.

Unsafe

Unsafe

The environment and textures are beautiful and the game loads quickly. However as expected of an early access game, all the animations and entity interactions aren’t there yet and there are quite a few bugs to be found: Getting stuck on staircases which crashes the game, doors not opening, the main monster leaving you in an area that if you revive you are stuck in map geometry.. the list goes on.

So while it has entirely been worth the early access payment, I can’t really play more than a couple sessions without getting a little frustrated at situations where the players did nothing wrong but the game is lost. I also feel that on “easy” the game is very difficult even if played almost perfectly. The AI “guards” the final(?) timed objective fiercely and unfairly.

Love the atmosphere, the style/graphics and the gameplay is fun, very challenging .

I hope they keep working on this game and add more stuff

D.W. Dagger: Chapter One

D.W. Dagger: Chapter One

A noir first-person murder mystery set in a gloomy 1947 Pacific Northwest city. Play as the renowned Detective D.W. Dagger to help solve his latest case. A violent murder, a possible suicide, and a handful of suspects.

Can you deduce what happened?

––

As the first case in the upcoming series, test your deductive reasoning skills to piece together the truth of a new violent crime.

Taking inspiration from video games like “Gone Home” and “What Remains of Edith Finch,” as well as the board game classic “Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective,” you follow the narrative told through evidence found within the crime scene. As the lead detective, you must find suspects, determine which evidence helps your case and which hurts it, and ultimately, determine who committed the gruesome act.

This is a small, first case to give players an idea of what the larger series entails. It takes around 30-45 minutes to finish, depending on your detective skills! There is no randomized evidence or alternate paths, so once you complete it, that’s it.

GRUNND

GRUNND

GRUNND is a 100% handcrafted, fully voiced adventure game about travelling to a seemingly ordinary place right next to you that slowly introduces itself as surreal and twisted world and has it’s own invisible gods, agendas, and order. You - tired after a dull day at your 9to5 job - fall asleep at the train on the way home. Next thing you do is jump out of that train into unknown station, and now need to plan your way back home. Surely enough, it’s not so easy?

People you meet are slightly weird, and in the air there’s an ethereal, omnipotent power floating just beyond your senses…

A bit of a different take on the point-and-click genre, with platformer-style built locations, fast travel, and multiple choice events introduced early on. This is not a puzzle heavy adventure and all puzzles are made without any nonsense or moon-logic. There is a rich story background for you to unravel; that is not only about you and the world - the people around you have their own thing and they are not here to help you.

The world is inspired by the works of Franz Kafka and David Lynch, and the setting has those taste droplets of Southern Gothic. This is not only the Protagonist’s journey - it’s yours as well.

Please enjoy the Demo, and let us know about your experience!
