It’s time to get out from the solar system

It’s time to get out from the solar system

This is an extremely low quality vertical scrolling arcade shootemup/bullet hell game. The objective is to fight through waves of enemies, perform limited ship upgrades, and eventually escape the solar system.

While the quality here is very low, the developer didn’t use retro pixel graphics, which makes this immediately better than thousands of games on Steam. The game runs properly in fullscreen and even supports 4K graphics, again better than thousands of games on Steam. The downsides, however, are significant. The graphics are of very low quality and bad to look at. The controls are lethargic and the ship moves like a slug. The translation is too terrible to make the story digestible. It’s just not fun. And what’s with the unskippable intro that replays when you die and goes on for an eternity?

Back in 2014 this was not the worst shoot em' up on steam for under 5$. It it still not the worst shoot em' up on steam in 2020. There is plenty of other shoot em' ups this generation for the same price. This game is lacking content compared to todays shoot em' up and this game is no longer being updated or supported. So if you are looking for e decently fun game for about this price, this is fine but keep looking they is alot more out there.

Space Trader: Merchant Marine

Space Trader: Merchant Marine

Space Trader Merchant Marine is that strange situation where two very different genres have been combined together in the hope of hitting that once in a lifetime combination that everybody agrees is pure genius, like Vampires and Teenagers, or Ninjas and Cheerleaders. Space Trader doesn’t quite hit that special recipe however.

Space Trader is a combination of a numbers trading simulator and a first person shooter and by far and large the biggest problem is that playing the game you have trouble telling which of these two aspects feel the most tacked on.

Space Trader Merchant Marine was released in Oct 23, 2008. It boasts a score of 89% from a review by GameFocus saying, ““One of the best indie games of 2008. An innovative and addictive experience. Addictive, very fun and innovative are the best words to describe the game and the bottom line is this is a welcome addition to any gamer’s library so buy this game and enjoy it.”

This is very akin to the how ‘reviews’ reflected Bubsy 3D on its own packaging, to those that remember.

The game is broken down into four different areas, exploration, trading, time management, and fighting/bounty hunting.

GROSS

GROSS

GROSS is a tower defense / first person shooter hybrid with new exciting and unique mechanics to spice things up.

100% tower defense

Just like other tower defense games, your goal is to keep your base safe against wave after wave of enemy attackers. Your main line of defense against the enemy hordes are barricades to force them into a maze, and automated turrets that attack them in many different ways.

While you’re in the construction phase, you have almost complete freedom to build whatever you want, wherever you want. GROSS is a true tower defense game. Build elaborate mazes for the enemies, or focus your resources on the turrets. You can even place traps on the ground. They are one use only, but are cheap and powerful.

The construction phase focuses on giving you all the tools to create an obstacle run that’s as difficult to overcome as possible. There is no time limit, and everything you build can be sold for a full refund until you start the next combat phase.

After all, figuring out how to use synergies between different turrets and building a maze for the attackers is most of the fun in a tower defense game. Why should it be different for a tower defense/first person shooter hybrid?

100% first person shooter

Once the combat starts, the game turns into a different beast entirely. Combat is fast paced and requires you to make split second decisions. At your disposal is a big arsenal of guns. All of them feature different firing modes and ammunition types. Full metal jacket rounds can penetrate multiple zombies in a row, and even shoot through objects. Hollow points knock enemies back and give you room to breathe. Incendiary rounds light enemies up and burn them for a while. Grenade and rocket launchers deal massive area damage, but have a chance to destroy the vital cash pickups.

With over a dozen weapons at your disposal, gunplay is fast and rewarding. There is also a number of active abilities you can use. They give you additional tools to kill or distract the baddies, move around more efficient, or manage your cash resources.

Resource management

Cash is the key to succeeding in GROSS. Enemies drop it when they die, but you’re not the only one after this green root of all evil. You have to be quick if you want to secure it. Gathering cash and transferring it to safety is one of your main tasks. Cash is required to buy defensive structures and active abilities. It is also the biggest factor that determines your score.

GROSS keeps you on your toes at all times. In any given moment, whatever you do or don’t has consequences. If you focus on killing attackers because your defenses are overwhelmed, this might well turn the tide of battle, but it also means loads of precious money gets stolen or destroyed in the meantime. Money that is needed to improve your defenses in the next construction phase.

Please keep in mind that anything you see here is subject to change (hopefully for the better). All footage currently shown is from the level Dead End, which will feature in the demo, and is only one of many levels that will offer a huge variety in looks and gameplay.

I started to play this game on Android. But I was not good at moving and aiming with my thumbs while shooting the zombies. So, I was glad to see the game was available as a F2P on Steam and went on with it on the PC version instead.

The F2P aspect of the game is less invasive on the PC than on the mobile version. There, I could fully enjoy the game ; its story, its absurd humour, its even more absurd quests, and its full voice acting cutscenes, without any adds blocking up my screen everytime I checked my inventory.

The Award for the longest dialogs goes to…

The first impressions of the game were really good, nice character modeling and a kind of open world to walk and actually being able to walk freely and without any movement problems (because lot of games like this one throw the gameplay with absurd character movement).

The game actually presents like an apocalyptic alike game since you are looking for your parents in an dark and abandoned house with some strange elements like this one, and you can see how dark is the house when is like 2 p.m outside, but it turns in a more friendly space as much as you explore the environment (honestly I thought this was going to be a dark and scary game from the start)

An enjoyable supernatural adventure game, still in development, which is currently held back by it’s mediocre combat system.

Noita

Noita

Extremely fun and unforgiving game. There’s a lot to explore and learn about the game, and the more you understand the broader your gameplay becomes. I would highly recommend playing the game without any outside tips or help first, as it’s very easy to get spoiled on certain spell tricks and combinations.

The music is great, and comes in sparingly, which enhances your exploration and combat. The enemies are tough at first until you learn their attack timings and patterns. The wand building is the most deep and expansive thing I’ve ever come across in a game, there are so many tricks and combinations you can create with wands that are mind boggling and beautiful. There will definitely be many occasions of you killing yourself testing the waters. There’s also alchemical combinations with all types of fluids, and exploring their effects is also fun and satisfying.

Games like Noita are rare.

Superficially, it looks like a basic dungeon crawler, with the addition of a completely dynamic and manipulable environment. Dig a little deeper, though, and you see the depth and amazing variety the game brings.

The wand, perk, and spell combinations alone make this game interesting, and give you reasons to keep playing. Me and my friends are still coming up with strange new ways to break the game…

But then you add the absolute difficulty of the game, the physics, the goofy interactions, the alchemy, the banger music, the huge amount of secrets, and… You get one of the best games ever made.
