Psycholonials

Psycholonials

So the trailers are very honest about the kinds of things this game does that might need content warnings. Guns and blood and mental anguish and stuff. But I also kinda wanna warn people about one other thing this game does because it’s pretty unpleasant. It’s also like my favorite thing this game does so, idk, up to you if you wanna keep reading.

This game fucks with you. The pretentious way to say it would be to call Psycholonials a “challenging piece of art” which I think definitely applies but, you know, jerk off hand motion. I’m not a writer but I’ll try to find better ways to phrase this because… it’s complicated. It keeps doing this thing where it puts you on the defensive by saying something super iffy, but I think after playing the whole thing that I’ve settled on giving Hussie the benefit of the doubt that that’s intentional and making a point. It drops a lot of really big, really red flags but all of them have a more charitable reading that is good actually but requires a lot of unearned good faith reading on your part to see it.

Hi, sit down and bear with me. Keep in mind i have never felt the need to write a negative review to a game in my entire life. I am just sad.

This game is simply awful, just incredibly bad. There is nothing to like about anything except the music and SOME of the art. Jokes are bad, it’s just “2020 haha” moments and it’s boring. Seriously, i would never finish this if i played it alone, it’s not interesting. Bear with me, what is there to like about an edgy mental “celebrity” who destroys an entire country just BECAUSE? What’s to like about dumb conversations and just “oh, society is bad and i have the right to act like this because… i don’t know, i guess i can”. A lot of deaths occur simply because, too.

****1/2

A classic-style point-and-click adventure with a unique and eye-catching graphic novel art style. The characters are well written, dialogue is believable and well acted, and the environment feels very well lived-in, with a great use of flavour text to maximize humour and character by describing the world through the character’s eyes and personality. The only flaw I can think to mention is a few interface issues that can get annoying but should definitely not stop you from playing this little gem.

The Cursed Forest

The Cursed Forest

I originally played this game when it was released and posted my thoughts in a review at Just Adventure. It is still accessible even though the site is dormant. At the time, I gave The Cursed Forest high marks.

I just finished replaying the game and my intention was to run through and pick up the achievements I had missed. Instead, I became totally absorbed and played a ‘new game’ all the way through.

The game begins with you receiving a phone call in the middle of the night and rushing off in your car. You are in a hurry and end up crashing in a mysterious forest. Your task is to find your way out. The Cursed Forest has been created in great detail with cabins, swamps, cliffs, lakes, campfires, caves, etc. There is a lot to explore and you quickly find that no people remain in the forest (only their possessions and homes are evident). The story of what happened to them is discovered in dozens of notes that you find along your journey.

This game has a lot of problems; it is mainly an exploration game, but areas are big and secrets are sparse. Achievements are fine, I didn’t use a walkthrough and found all of them but two on my first playthrough (and the other two I didn’t find accidentally, I almost did). However, if you like exploring, like me, there isn’t enough in this game to keep you invested with exploration, and you’ll end up getting bored. In addition, there is a bug that makes some notes not appear where they should (I’m not even sure why, seems to be a random thing), and you can lose a lot of time searching for them, not realizing it was a bug (if you miss one note on Section 1 and one on Section 4, try restarting the section; also, the last section says there are 9 Sarah letters, but there are only 7, according to developers).

Warp Frontier

Warp Frontier

I do not think the puzzles are good, but overall I find this game compelling, both in the story and for the meta-puzzle of ‘what do I have to do differently to get the other achievement’ element. One playthrough takes very roughly seven hours. I was in the beginning of my second playthrough when I started this review. I think it would need at least three playthroughs to get all the achievements. For full disclosure, I’m an immigrant to Australia. If you don’t like our sarcasm, you may not like the presentation and characters.

warp frontier stars space cop and former drummer vince ‘tin man’ cassini, who kicked some ass back in the day when he wasn’t on the turps or gigging with his band, but still has some juice left in him (the non-alcoholic variety). on his way home for a birthday celebration, his ship gets shot down. after some first aid to the ship he finds the attackers, killed by nothing somehow, then runs into a girl who leads him to something he’s been trying to find for a long time.

Football Drama

Football Drama

I’m not a football fanatic (freak) however the original and poetic approach to this subject has intrigued me almost immediately. The story is set in a fantasy (imaginary) and magical championship in which the player takes on the role of the coach Rocco Galliano. In order to improve the score of the Calchester Assembled the player will need to make the right choices and can do so only by identifying himself to Galliano’s troubling life.

This is a game of choices and experiences shrouded in an aura of mystery right from the start. The gossip, the simulations and the tone of the matches are hilarious.

In this game, I reached the final credits extremely quickly. Yoga instead of the first training session for my team and going to the bar to strengthen team spirit looked like a great decision, but something went wrong… Perhaps the owner of the team did not appreciate the subtle trolling in his address, in short I was fired. The second playthrough was more successful but less fun and it uncovered rather serious flaws.

Football Drama consists of 2 major parts – turn-based football matches and choice-based storytelling. There’re a lot of references to real people (you’ll meet several recognizable personalities from the football world and also Pier Paolo Pasolini) and references to clubs/situations and the storytelling part is good enough to entertain and catch your attention. On the other hand turn-based football matches become boring rather fast and almost unaffected by what is happening in story.

TRACHI

TRACHI

TRACHI is an interactive fiction game that plays similar to a visual novel. Upon starting the game, I was impressed by the minimalistic style of the opening and menu. Everything is simplistic yet looks very sharp, and you can immediately tell that a lot of effort was put into this game.

The tale starts off with an inquisition of sorts, and as you converse in this opening sequence the plot begins to unfold. The timeline bounces around as you are spoonfed piecemeal bits of information that slowly come together. I thought the use of this enhanced the storytelling and definitely kept me intrigued. Most of the characters have their own sprite art, and both the pixel and portrait art look top notch.

Kinetic Novel with some interaction.

I enjoyed the writing a lot (and I disliked writing in most VNs I’ve tried so far).

Canny use of sound-effects gives so much atmosphere. They are proof that the devs have a deep understanding of storytelling.

I stopped playing after midgame because of too many crashes and slowdown. Reason is my old pc, I guess. Should work better if you have a bit more than the minimum specs.
