Ash of Gods: Redemption

Ash of Gods: Redemption

Do you like story-driven turn-based tactical RPGs? Even those who have nothing to do with Japan and with fantasy in general?

Well, I was just searching for other turn-based games, and this one popped out as one of the recommended titles on Steam.

And I was not disappointed at all, as a long-time RPG player and turn-based lover.

The gameplay isn’t really innovative, but I wanted exactly the contrary - here you’ll face a classical turn-based system in which everyone will stay put until you choose which action to do (each turn is timed anyways).

Choices. Much like the choice you’re making on whether to buy this game or not, making difficult choices is one of the key aspects of this game. It will affect how the characters react, whether they’ll live or die, how the story develops, and ultimately how it will end. A lot of that takes time and setup, and in many ways this is the kind of game that takes patience to love. It has its share of faults, but if you can get past them I think there’s an excellent strategy game just waiting to be played.

Gord

Gord

Lead the people of the Tribe of the Dawn as they venture deep into forbidden lands. Complete quests that shape their personalities, impact their wellbeing, and decide the fate of their community. Ensure the survival of your populace in a grim fantasy world inspired by Slavic folklore.

Erect palisades, develop structures, and grow your gord from a humble settlement to a formidable fortress. However, expansion won’t be easy! Your population is constantly at risk from enemy tribes, gruesome monsters, and mysterious powers that lurk in the surrounding woods.

Venture outside the walls of your settlement with Gord’s AI-driven quest system, ensuring a huge variety of challenges to take on. The Scenario’s main objectives will guide your gameplay, while versatile side quests and random encounters will send you off into the wilderness to hunt down legendary creatures, uncover secrets about the Ancients, or vanquish a nasty scourge. Expect the unexpected.

Set the stage by choosing from a wide range of Scenario options, and try to emerge victorious. Take it easy or set an impossible challenge; almost anything can be adjusted! Choose from a variety of primary objectives, select the level size, the intensity of raids, the environment you’ll play in, the types of enemies you’ll face, starting resources, and even the severity of weather. Of course, don’t forget the Horrors.

A healthy populace is the key to survival in Gord. Every aspect of your settlers’ lives - from illness and hunger to the death of their kin - can impact each subject’s Sanity and Burden levels. Keep a close eye on them, as once they reach a critical point your subject will suffer from a breakdown or even flee your rule.

Please the Gods with your prayers and they may give you access to their spellcasting abilities. Incantations vary in nature - some are offensive while others are defensive - but they all help to tip the battlefield in your favor. Conceal areas from your enemies, gain control over threatening beasts, or turn an unholy rage against all who dare to oppose you.

The Chronicle explains the history of the Gord universe that blends real-world Slavic mythology with dark fantasy. Pages torn from The Chronicle will be scattered throughout the game’s landscapes, giving dedicated players an additional challenge of discovery. Collecting as many pages as possible will provide insight into the origins of the Gods, ancient factions, and the mystical Whisperers.

Blade of Darkness

Blade of Darkness

As it is the case with many other people, Blade of Darkness brings a lot of good memories from my childhood back to me. However, at the time I didn’t understand the game too well, since I was just a child. I remember my cousin explaining to me how to do combos, but after I tried to do them a couple of times, I would just proceed to spam-click the left button. Now, after so many years I finally picked the game up again and, oh, boy, did I have a blast playing through it and beating it at the end! I would say the bosses are quite a challenge, but once you get the hang of the combat, you will have no problem with butchering them. All of the classes are unique and fun to play around with. At first the weapons seem basic, but each and every one of them has its strenghts and weaknesses, depending on the character that’s wielding it. Besides the base damage and defense the weapons and shields have, there are a lot of other different “hidden” stats like range, speed, hitbox radius and so on. And there are so many different places, secret rooms and hidden areas, containing all sorts of goods - food, potions and the best of all - special weapons with unique powers and moves you can perform with them! The enemies have patterns and at first they are a bit difficult to follow, but around the mid-game you are bound to be hacking and slashing body bits left and right. There is nothing more satisfying than dismembering Orcs and leaving their remains in a puddle of blood!

Very caffeine high while writing this so sorry if it’s rambly:

This is one of the most amazing and unique games I have ever played. If you love Dark Souls, this is a game for you, despite the fact that the actual combat is limited. If you like the nostalgia of old arcade games, this also will probably appeal to your taste. This is such a stream-lined game with minimal controls that just make sense. Instead of focusing on how to fight or do combos, your controls quickly become instinctual so all your focus can go into the puzzles and the beautiful world. It’s also nice having a game that is capable of teaching you gameplay without an actual tutorial. This game is just really well formed to help you learn how to function within it, and find value in things that seem like props at first (maps!). As Carlos has said, this is a slow cooked game, and the longer you play it, the more you can appreciate it.

This is perhaps the most underrated game of all time. Maybe not the best per se, but it’s well up there on a list of the 10 best games ever created in my opinion. It’s criminal how little attention this game has gotten, especially for it’s quality. Starting off; the graphics are insanely good, not just for indie game standards, but by AAA standards too. (In fact, the entire game is good by AAA standards) The puzzles are fun and engaging, and though they aren’t the hardest, the game balances this out by putting perhaps the best implementation of a timer system ever. (Note: not actual timers) During many of the puzzles, the puzzle isn’t so much the puzzle itself, but kiting around enemies and the environment in order to solve said puzzle. (hence, enemies hunting you down serves as a sort of “timer” where you have to think on your toes or get killed) It’s also surprisingly fair in the ways enemies work, to the point where most of my deaths feel like they were in ways intended to catch me and screw me over, but it was my own stupidity and lack of foresight that got me killed, not unfairness. The world is very well designed as well, one of the few in a game where I actually found myself intrigued with the lore and in awe at one particular area, won’t spoil what it is, but you’ll know what I’m talking about if you find it. It’s beautiful and the developer does an incredible job of jamming pretty much as many different types of areas as possible into the map (which is open world, TECHNICALLY) Back on the lore, I did find myself interested with the lore, which isn’t as rare for myself as being interested with the world (something that I can only point to about 1-3 games prior doing) but is still not that common. The lore is pretty simplistic, you discover it through written messages by “M” with various numbers describing their order. The implementation and writing in this is insanely good as well, with different parts given at different areas (for example, 60 showing up before 30, but 30 giving more information despite coming earlier chronologically than 60 ((this example is not necessarily true by exact numbers, but you get the point))) I found myself interested in the story and there were a few surprises in it/explanations for what was going on, all while keeping me in the dark about the specifics of what it all means. It’s worth noting, I haven’t finished the game, though I am pretty close. I recommend this game fully for anyone who likes a good, well built world, and a well designed, if minimal, story. 10/10, and I mean that fully. It was worth every penny.

Nadir - Prologue: Slay the Six

Nadir - Prologue: Slay the Six

Nadir - the point on the celestial sphere directly below an observer. It’s the direct opposite of the zenith… and your destination.

GAME DESCRIPTION: 🔥

Nadir - Prologue: Slay the Six is a free prologue to the dark deckbuilding roguelike adventure, with its artwork burning of infernal fire, and many extraordinary inspirations, the deepest of them coming straight from Dante’s Divine Comedy.

Control powerful, yet extremely blemished teams of characters, each representing one of the deadly sins. Fight using a plethora of unholy cards and try to escape the seemingly endless, multi-layered city.

TWIST ON A TURN SYSTEM 🔥

The Threat Counter shows how powerful the enemy’s attacks will become. There is no limit of played cards, but each of them adds points to the Threat Counter, so you’ll have to manage your risk-taking.

CHARACTER-BASED DECK BUILDING 🔥

Each character on your team contributes to your main deck; find synergies between each Sinner’s cards and build a dream (or nightmare) team.

CONTROL YOUR SINS 🔥

Every Sin has its own group of Sinners, shells that will bring its will to Nadir. As the sinners’ journey progresses, their power will grow, unlocking new abilities to fight even stronger threats. And if they shall fall, the abyss will produce more fools to try.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN APPROACH 🔥

Do you prefer raw damage or a more cunning way of poison? There is a multitude of different card effects to choose from. But remember that the enemy will attack you back, so you better look for cards that will decrease the Threat Counter.

CHALLENGING BOSSES 🔥

Each level of Nadir has its own Floor Guardian that you will have to defeat in order to go deeper into the city. But be careful, each of them has a unique ability!

REACH THE BOTTOM OF NADIR 🔥

This goal seems simple, but considering the characteristics of Sins, will they be able to divide the power between them?

A JOURNEY UNLIKE ANY OTHER 🔥

Watch your back on your way to the bottom of Nadir, taking time to admire its horrific look. It might feel familiar – from the wonders of the Divine Comedy, to desaturated aesthetics of Sin City, to the unforgettable design of Hellboy – yet not comfortable at all.

MODDING SUPPORT 🛠️

Devil’s in the detail and that’s why Nadir offers a built-in, extensive modding support for those who want to expand the world of Nadir and imprint their twisted fantasies onto every inch of the game.

Great Story

Great/Challenging Gameplay

Unique Characters

Perfect Music

It also now has many performance bug fixes so everything is extra smooth.

If you like strategy, this is a must buy.

In my opinion weakest title in the series for two reason:

Just one campaign, so it’s quite a bit shorter than the others

The new faction doesn’t really feel at all central to the story. Sure you field naga units but the story is entirely centered around humans with the faction just being randomly attached. It could just as well be orcs or possums and nothing would change.

Still the game is good enough to give it a thumbs up. If you are looking to enter the series for a first time I’d start with the others.

ReCurse: Eternal

ReCurse: Eternal

ReCurse: Eternal is a virtual reality sword-fighting single-player game that is combat-focused featuring only boss-level characters which will be fought one at a time as the player progresses from one stage to another. IT IS NOT AN OPEN WORLD RPG. The game’s progression will work like traditional fighting games such as tower mode or arcade modes where you fight each enemy in a ladder-style progression. The actual combat is inspired by souls-like games that encourage strategic gameplay by punishing rushed and spammy movement and rewarding rhythmic dodging, blocking, parrying, attack patterns.
