Allan

Allan

I enjoyed playing Allan.

Allan is twin-stick shooter with some puzzle mechanics.

The whole game is like an old Zelda 2D dungeon crawler with an interesting work on light and shadow with 3D depth.

The ambiance is nice, you can just follow the adventure to discover secret rooms and power ups.

Enemies encounter are lethal which is nice to add some challenge.

Worth its cost as a small game!

Allan is a game with a very strong ambiance.

Of course there are puzzles and ennemies but the main thing about it is what it inspires.

You walk in a space that is no different from top down action rpg you could have played on Super NES or Genesis, stuff like a link to the past, but with a really deep 3D effect, combined with shadows and lights that really make you feel small and in danger.

Also, sound effects make you enter the game quite strongly, even if at start, it does not seem to do it.

Most of the time it is quite calm but then, you walk on a trap, get shot… or an ennemy sees you and starts running closer.

Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi

Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi

From the prolonged life and death struggle to survive in the hostile environs of a blockaded mining complex, cut off from any form of outside assistance; to performing - under duress - morally dubious acts to sate the whims of otherworldly beings to whom life and the living have no intrinsic worth; to the expectation from your corporate superiors that, even under threat of - and after experiencing - pain of death, you will continue to operate your day to day routine mining spirit electricity so that your company’s board members can post record profits and justify their seven figure bonuses and six month vacations in unnamed tax havens; Undernauts reveals itself to be a fantastical metaphor for the everyday situation for many of its players, that of the constant and unspeakable pressure of attempting to carve a living from the ossified, crumbling husk that is the modern day Gig Economy.

For context, I played it on PC for 77 hours including the post-game content which I presumed to be obligatory to complete. I highly recommend to use a gamepad or other controllers instead of K+M controls because support is bad in the ported version.

Now, to start with: Undernaut: Labyrinth of Yomi is a first person dungeon crawler at first, then a horror game second. To my surprise, the game remarkably managed to show the correct way to set an ominous tone and a gritty narrative of a sick and twisted world with the story pulling-no-punches when it’s required which I personally absolutely enjoyed. You, as the main protagonist will be subjected to numerous morally dubious acts to survive under the whims of otherworldly beings whether you want to or not. And adding that, the somber visual style captures perfectly the way the story should be told. And I simply adore the art directions and the representations of the characters in-game such as the Mad King and The Divine Child which I noticed to be quite different from the other characters' design of which heavily came from the Spirit Hunter series artist. Different from the other games, ULoY is a reverse-isekai game where the world takes place in Yomi Ward - Japan during the Showa period. It’s a very interesting take on the trope and one I thoroughly enjoyed.

Death Cathedral

Death Cathedral

Death Cathedral is a very challenging action RPG with tons of strategy elements.

You’ll need to build a powerful army of the living dead with enemies' flesh and bones within 15 days to kill the devil lurking in the deep end of the cathedral.

The battles in Death Cathedral contain not only realistic sword fighting, but also dashing and gorgeous skills. Parry, dodge, or roll - cope with different attacks in various ways. Observe and master your skills during combats and keep confronting stronger opponents.

A wide collection of characters:

More than 40 playable characters, each with a large number of well-designed and extremely vigorous attack actions.

Decay system:

You are controlling corpses of flesh and bones sticked together with black magic. Every exploration increases the decay of the body. The dead warrior collapses when the decay reaches 100%. The increase in decay is irreversible and you can only reduce the increase by applying “preservatives”. Be aware of the team selection ahead of every run!

Roster building:

You’ll constantly lose your warriors due to the decay process. But on the other hand, you’ll be able to create new corpses with flesh and bones of the defeated enemies. This means that you won’t be able to lay back and win easily with the same team over and over again. In order to lead the team forward, you will have to adapt to changes and achieve dynamic balance.

Resource management:

There’re all kinds of resources to accquire in Death Cathedral, which are essential for exploration. However, you can’t always have it all. You need to understand what’s really urgent and make your choices accordingly.

Unforseeable adventure:

You will encounter not only enemies but also facilities to aid you, and make you pay at the same time. Be aware not to backfire yourself by interacting in wrong scenarios.

Countless equipments:

Equipments offer not only boost to attributes, they also grant powerful specialties to your warriors. To make full use of the specialties, your lineup, enemy’s attributes, the area and many factors are under consideration. Specialties may also affect the items and facilities you use.

Immersive atmosphere:

Six distinctive areas can be explored, offering a solemn and dark medieval fantasy landscape.

Monstrous Molecules

Monstrous Molecules

Monstrous Molecules is a very fun, puzzler dungeon crawler. The levels are labyrinths good looking, unique, full of unique enemies, puzzles and problem solving. The idea is to traverse these levels to find the correct elements to use to defeat the many different types of enemies and puzzles to continue on to the boss. The art design is lovely. The music is also fantastic. They really add to the ambiance and overall feel to this unique dungeon crawler. The enemies are fun and puzzles are also unique because of the elements and how you use chemistry to traverse and conquer. Monstrous Molecules is aimed towards a younger audience as it is a learning game about chemistry and element building, but do not let that stop you. Learning is fun and is never too early or too late. This is a great take on chemistry, dungeon crawling and puzzle solving. Recommended for any age who likes fun, fairly challenging, learning and puzzling dungeon crawlers.

Ring of Pain

Ring of Pain

3.5/5 : Card battler heavy on the modern “roguelike”: you die a lot, over and over, but your deck improves slowly (I’m going to start calling them neo-roguelike since rogue had no such advancement). Very pretty and novel UI. Weird story. I’ve played it all the way through and I don’t have any idea what I’m supposed to get.

The worst part of the game and the reason for the low score: YOU CANNOT STOP PLAYING without losing the run. It’s the worst no-save game I’ve seen in a decade.

Full playthroughs take hours, but if you need to stop, you have to leave the game running or you lose all your progress. Not only no save, but no saved position. I have had to leave the game running for days because I had a great run going but then had silly things come up like work, sleep, cleaning, or making dinner. Perhaps the RING OF PAIN name is supposed to reference how terrible this designed defect is?

Real player with 511.8 hrs in game

Alright, I’ll do my best to keep this review neat and concise. I will preface by saying that I tried the closed beta of this game.

Ring of Pain is a Dungeon Crawler Card Game where the player chooses to go left or right and attack monsters. You have stats and manage item slots with items found across dungeons, progressing deeper and deeper into this “ring” until you reach the end. You have Attack and Defense, Speed to determine whether you or the monster attacks first, and Clarity, which manages how much healing you get from potions, Curse chances, and additional Souls (currency) is acquired per monster kill. Item slots are individualized, meaning if you find a weapon, it goes in the weapon slot and if you find a new weapon, you have to make a choice of either chucking your old one for the new one or keeping the old one.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Ratings 9/10 (Dynamic Open World)

Just like Wormskull, Verdungo is another excellent RPG Maker game that is made by the single developer, Shane. The game world is a huge big open world, but what is amazing is that the game world is dynamic and evolves based on the decisions of the main character. So the player’s decision matters, and has a big profound effect on the dynamic game world. Let me give a few concrete examples.

There are 10 different factions in the game world, and your decision to aid, hinder or even attack different factions will have deep lasting influences in the game world.

I am a huge fan of these traditional and turn based rpgs –– I own more than a hundred, and have played the vast majority of them. And I can say with no reservations that this game is simply a masterpiece.

It has everything a fan could want with the quick and involving pace that can be impossible to turn away from (check the hours played), the crafting of various items, the mining, the fishing, the side quests, the secrets to discover, and the tons of treasures to collect. I guarantee you will be completely absorbed.
