The Miskatonic

The Miskatonic

Make multiple save files! Mine corrupted somehow, no idea how, and it was right before the end and I had to reclick through about 45 mins of reading. Annoying.

Game was longer than expected, which was good. A good deal on sale. Had been looking at this game for a while, but I heard it was short….and 5 bucks for short wasn’t really buyable imo. So I waited for sale, and it finally did and I’m glad I bought it.

Game is very incomplete though. Art is great, story is great and rich and lorie. Only has 3-4 music tracks. Is linear phonetic visual novel with a weird pseudo exploration kinda mode? but actually not explorable its deciding whether to talk to people along the way or not and the talks have no bearing on the story, its just lore. I mean you’ll be doing the talks tho cause its fun so that’s fine. The world is very interesting.

So, I’ve completed the game in 4-5 hours, and given the fact that it’s a linear story, with only window for replayability being the fact that you might missed some of the dialogues (yes, that can happen).

The game is as described: Point and click based visual novel, set in a post-apocalyptic(?) lovecraftian world, which is fine, the fans wil like it, especially the goofy take, and the matching art-style, and the story is also acceptable, though it wasn’t enough.

My problems with this “game” are the following:

In A Nutshell

🔵 Pros

  • Decent free-roaming, survival horror gameplay.

  • No hand holding: players need to figure out everything on their own.

  • Quests also being “mini-puzzles” based on how to use found items in solving problems.

  • Sufficient variety of equipment and enemies.

🔴 Cons

  • A few but significant bugs that can lead to major gameplay disruption / force a reload.

  • Autosave-only saving system at each area transition, no manual saves whatsoever, not even at fixed points.

  • Sometimes certain quests can glitch, preventing progression.

This is a 2D top down horror themed survival/twin stick brawler hybrid game with a rich story and handmade artwork. Explore an alternative universe Finland and fight off creepy monsters, keep yourself alive long enough with the tools in your inventory and you may unravel the choices-matter interactive story.

There’s a few good points here, the atmosphere is good and the game launches under Windows 10, which puts the game above so many other indie titles. As far as handmade art goes, it’s perfectly acceptable and fits well with the theme. Unfortunately there’s some deficiencies, too. Resolution and controls are both fixed and can’t be changed, which makes the game fall below minimum standards for PC. Also, the game lacks polish and suffers from many gamebreaking bugs and crashes. Finally, twin stick top-down genre died a long time ago shortly after 3D accelerators became available back in 1995 with the S3 Virge.

Fhtagn! - Tales of the Creeping Madness

Fhtagn! - Tales of the Creeping Madness

My group of friends and I have been searching for a game to match “The Yawhg” for a couple years now, and the day of prophecy has come. I cannot recommend this game enough, as it became an instant classic for us. It’s fun to play solo, but the meat of the game is playing with 1-3 others. The core loop is simple to pick up, but difficult to master: pick a location, pick one of two known actions to gain stats, a random event (based on your location) happens which you need to resolve, then you pass or fail said event and move to the next turn. Failure is not punished so much as laughed at and, occasionally, rewarded.

Fun game! A bit hard to grasp at the beginning. I didn’t really like the offered tutorial. I prefer tutorials that unfold while playing. Furthermore it would be great, if the controller support was better. I was amazed as I used a mouse the first time and was able to get tooltips for the different stats.

Using a controller we figured it out by guessing. :)

Sadly this game isn’t much known, so there aren’t many mods written (although the ones that are out are hilarious and fun to play!)

Can’t wait for the update. We played with 3-4 players for 2 days and got most of the achievements (first time I was compelled to do that). But getting the same stories over and over makes it boring over time.

Otherwise, here’s a summarized pros and cons list on why I don’t recommend the game at full price. But first, a primer to the game.

Primer

Baobab’s Mausoleum EP 1 is a retro styled point and click made into the JRPG format (meaning instead of clicking per se, you’ll be using the WASD keys to move and the spacebar to interact with items). Before you begin any gameplay section, the game frontloads you with 2 pieces of information. Firstly that this mysterious town of Flamingo’s Creek is a horrific place, termed a place that only appears in nightmares, and secondly that a murderer is on the loose in the town.

I enjoyed this game, even if it isn’t really a stellar example of its genre. The aesthetic is lovely, spooky yet charming, and the soundtrack works really well with the graphics.

However, it definitely looks like the person who wrote the dialogue is not a native English speaker. There’s nothing wrong with not having perfect spelling, grammar, and punctuation in your general typing, but when producing a game it’s a great idea to have a professional editor or at least a native English speaking friend to look over your dialogue before release. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what the dialogue meant and fixing the errors in my head, which really spoiled my immersion.

Viscerafest

Viscerafest

Viscerafest

Viscerafest is a piece of playable poetry wrapped around a bloody gut-punching, alien shooting, retro-style shooter, that seems to be heavily inspired by games the likes of Duke Nukem and Quake.

And not just heavy inspired; Viscerafest literally plays out and feels just as good. Lead by a tenacious, narcissistic female protagonist who doesn’t care about anything other than quick cash out and goes the extra mile to cause as much mayhem as possible, a fitting personality for the game I must say.

Usually I don't do reviews, but this time is exceptional

Let me cut to the chase. This game is good.

I'll try to not over praise this game because now avaliable only one episode and it's too early to say, how good full game will be, but at this moment everything in this game makes me scream "Bloody hell, that feels good!!!". Movement is fast and smooth, gunplay is good and well-balanced, enemies are tough and every one of them requires a special approach to kill them, levels are complex and really creative. If you are a big fan of oldschool shooters and you're looking for real challenge - Viscerafest is your choise.

## Swallow the Sea

Wow. Such an amazing little game. The premise is simple: You can eat things smaller than you and you can be eaten by things bigger than you. This simple mechanic works amazingly well in a creepy environment that really makes you feel your progression as you delve deeper into the organic darkness of the sea. Beautiful and touching. Loved it and would highly recommend it!

Simple game with an interesting artstyle and a fun concept!

Very good sound design, and somewhat obscure bribe of a story.

Quite short to beat once, a bit longer if you try for the achievements.

It does feel quite frustrating tho, the 4 minutes is very tight and I've lost numerous runs between 4:05 and 4:10, all to one same stupid mob in the last area.

Same for the hitless run, there's a part I can't seem to be able to dodge.

But otherwise it's good challenge, and even if it's frustrating it's still fun, and not very long anyway
