Master of Magic Classic

Master of Magic Classic

The best game of my life came to Steam.

I’ve been playing Master of Magic since it first came out in ‘94. I was in middle school back then, I think my dad mail ordered the game for me and my brother as a gift. I played it over and over. I played it even after I got the Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, PS 2, 3, 4, signed up for WoW classic, BC, FT, got the Elder Scrolls series, and until last year, after I learned about the Caster of Magic mod.

I’ll just say that it fundamentally changed my life. I’ve developed a strong preference for fantasy themed games, novels and even board games and strategy games. I’ve read many fantasy novels and light novels, even wrote some, and went on to play fantasy-themed RPG’s and simulations like HOMM series and Baldur’s Gate series. But still, even after literally 25 years of challenge, Master of Magic is still the best game ever for me.

Unfortunately there have been severe changes to the base game. I will detail the changes I think are not in keeping with the spirit of the original game.

  1. Very little reward from claiming towers etc. Now all you get is mainly mana, money and some rubbish item.

  2. The AI can see everything and exploits that advantage whereas the player has to actually scout the terrain. The AI uses its unfair sight advantage to hunt down your units that it couldn’t possibly be able to see if it wasn’t cheating.

Unhappy Ever After

This is an update of my review after finishing 40 hours of the game. I have just killed a big boss and concluded the main game. I am about to start on 2 different DLCs of this game.

Now after 40 hours of this game, I have seen a number of shortcomings and bugs, and will try to write about them in this update, so that I present an accurate picture of the game.

Shortcoming of this game.

1. This game is an ABANDONWARE, like what many other previous reviews have said. It was originally a Kickstarter game, where backers paid money directly to the developer to create this game and some DLCs. The developer got the money, created the game and 2 DLCs and left in February 2017. What this means is that currently there is no tech support of any kind, and there are many small bugs and irritating features which are not fixed. However, the game itself is still good enough to be played, and I have completed the main game. For the price of $6.99, I think it is definitely worth it for me.

This is an edit of my earlier review. Initially, the way the monsters leveled with you, along with the lack of gear, made the battles very long and tedious. However, within days of posting my review, the developer has made several changes to the game that eliminate many of my negative comments. First, there is now a difficulty setting. Those who want the much more difficult battles, can have them, and those who want a bit less of a grind feel and a more casual experience can select the very easy or easy settings. I’ve tried them out, and it’s like a completely new game. Even in very easy mode, the battles still require a bit of strategy and take a little time, but they are nowhere near the length they used to be. Monsters will be a lower level than you and do far less damage, which means the constant need for health items is also greatly diminished.

Update April 11, 2015:

THE memory leak has been fixed, but the game has such poor performance across the board that the game is unplayable. Still crashes. Still many many bugs and unfinished things. I am way too frustrated trying to play through the broken, unfinished stuff with awful performance.

Beating the final “boss” doesn’t even make sense in the campaign. Maybe there’s supposed to be some more cutscenes that explain it that aren’t finished/added yet? The overall story is very poorly written.

Story

Strange things are happening in the Land of the Dead. Instead of reaping souls, Thanatos, the Angel of Death, has to deal with his teenage daughter Prim. Every night, Prim has the same dream: An oddly familiar human boy cries out for her help. Needless to say that our heroine tries to answer the call. There‘s just one tiny problem: The Grim Reaper has strictly forbidden her to enter the Realm of the Living – she‘s not ready for the immense power she‘d develop there, he claims.

Unfortunately, when Prim finds a way to trick her father and travel to Earth, it painfully turns out that Thanatos‘s presentiments have been right all along…

At its core, PRIM is a story of a father learning to let go and a girl finding out who she really is. But it’s also a thrilling adventure, full of magic and darkness. On her journey, Prim repeatedly has to switch between the Realm of the Dead and the Land of the Living, where she faces demons, real ones and ones within herself, while always being accompanied by her sidekick, an eye with spider legs.

This game looks pretty… and unfortunately that’s the only positive thing I can say about it. And I say “unfortunately” because it does feel like there’s a good idea in there somewhere, but it got lost between the low-quality writing and the myriad of bugs that make enjoying this game very difficult.

Apparently this game has been in Early Access for a long time, so I’m skeptical that it’ll ever be finished (or at least polished up a bit), but I hope I’m wrong and sometime in the future I can come back and change this to a positive review.

#15 of ~69 in my “How many games can I get for under $5” review series.

This game is beautiful for something made with Unity. The art is quite pleasing. The problem is the gameplay is lacking. The controls are lacking. And it does not translate to English well. This is one I wouldn’t even review yet if it wasn’t part of a review series, but it is and I must.

If you want to support a developer that hasn’t quite hit their stride yet that hasn’t been keeping up on this game, go for it. If you are super concerned about money, this is available on many websites that sell Steam Keys. Just be sure you have a trustworthy source and you can get it super cheap. Or look for trades involving Steam coupons for the game.

Now, at the time of this review, I have only had the game for 5 days. But throughout those 5 days, my experience with this game has been amazing. You start out with absolutely nothing, just a walk and a jump. As you progress through the game, however, you will gain many more abilities that I will not name because, y’know, spoilers. The movement at the beginning feel clunky and uncomfortable but as you play the game, the movement just feels better and better and it just gets to this point where it is extremely satisfying when you can do something combinal most/all of those techniques. If you do wish to buy this game, DO NOT do what I did and do your first playthrough in masochist mode where instead of 3 hearts and 2 checkpoints, its only 1 heart and 1 checkpoint. If you do decide however that you are a masochist and want to do masochist mode on your first playthrough, well, I sincerely wish you the best of luck. I would rate this game a 9.5/10, why 9.5 and not 10? Probably just because of the movement at the beginning and how disgusting it feels. But all things aside, this is an absolutely amazing game so please buy it and support the developer who has been working really hard on this game.

Warhammer 40,000: Dakka Squadron - Flyboyz Edition

“Just fly straight at ’em as fast as ya can, give ’em sum dakka, and don’t ferget to yell “WAAAGH!” dead loud like. Nuffin’ to it!"

— Flyboss Skarzag, Badtoof Skwadron

INTRODUCTION

“Warhammer 40,000: Dakka Squadron - Flyboyz Edition” is an arcade shooter I first became aware of in a preview of the mobile version in a “White Dwarf” magazine from 2017. I am only now getting to reading my older issues, yet before I got to even look the mobile game up on the Google Play Store, this was announced for PC. Being a long time player of the greenskins I knew I was destined to join their ranks once more. I am a long time PC gamer who enjoys mobile ports, in fact I often prefer them for a casual aside to more serious games. Mobile platforms are quite often the testing ground for potential PC releases and this is becoming more and more the case.

I have mixed feelings about this game, but I will approve of it for 40k fans who are fond of the Orks.

There is barely any background information about the 40k setting in the game itself, and there is an unspoken assumption that the person who is playing this game is already familiar with the lore, so people who are not 40k fans will probably not care about what is going on.

Graphic settings are practically a joke: There is a single low/medium/high graphics option and the ability to turn VSync on or off, and that’s it. The framerate is capped at 60 FPS in-game, and while it easily keeps to that cap, this might bother some people with higher end gaming PCs with a +120Hz monitor.

REZ PLZ

REZ PLZ

You’re going to enjoy this game if you’re playing in single player mode… but you will have missed out on something really special. This game was designed for you to be sitting next to your friend. I play a significant amount of co-op games, but Rez Plz scratches an itch I didn’t know I had. They turned “friendly fire” on its head and gave me a world that I can spend hours in, ignoring story, and just mess around with a buddy.

The puzzles were fun. The pixel art is super creative with really cool death animations and sprites. The game mechanics put a very refreshing twist on a platformer.

tbh its the game that i didnt know i was waiting to play , it should get more attention the mechanics in this game are amazing each level intrduces a new ability a new puzzle , the dialog is funny the story is ehh but tbh this is the type of game where you can enjoy everything from the funny deaths to the rezzing to the soundtrack and to the weird glitches that make you restart the level

Savior of Light

Savior of Light

I definitely am hooked! The Story is beautiful. I love turn-based RPG games, so it fits quite the criteria. Savior of Light reminds me much of the old Final Fantasy and Legend of Zelda games. The music used for the game is also top tier!

Real player with 24.6 hrs in game

It’s very reminiscent of the first Final Fantasy game to me, which is pretty nostalgic.

Considering this is a free demo experience serving as a prologue to the entire story there is quite a bit of content to enjoy.

Savior of Light has that classic FF style of gameplay and combat mechanics.

Balanced throughout the story line to pose a challenge without requiring too much grinding.

Story, characters and the world are fun to explore. And the music might be actually my favourite part. I can’t wait for this to continue. ^^
