Baldr Sky

Baldr Sky

I’m not really sure what to say about the experience that is Baldr Sky. There is so very much I could get into, but saying anything too specific feels like reviewing Muv-Luv Alternative as if it was a stand alone work.

While being nothing alike in ways, Baldr Sky does check a lot of the same boxes and as it is much lesser known, I’ll just mention those similarities first.

-It is very creative, well thought out and complex.

-It is very sci-fi centric and technical without being dry.

-It is an incredibly engaging, edge-of-your-seat read.

Baldr Sky is one of the best recent VNs and JRPGs to have been localised to the West, delivering an entertaining story, memorable characters, and robust action RPG combat.

It’s set in a cyberpunk vision of urban Japan in the aftermath of a tragedy called Gray Christmas, which left an entire city in ruins. Local and federal governments, a private corporation, a research team and a religious cult are implicated in the event, with each party blaming the others. The survivors who comprise the bulk of the main cast include alumni of an esteemed school, who believe they had been witness to suspicious events prior to the disaster during their school days.

Pros:

1. The story is an entertaining piece as it’s dark and gritty, while keeping itself levelheaded as it doesn’t exaggerate or downplay during the entire game.

2. The story’s uses an excellent mix of Cila’s development and surrounding conflicts of it’s dystopian world, as it involves humanism, rebellion, and human x android legalities.

Synergia is a Cyberpunk visual novel heavily reminiscent of Blade Runner and similar stories focusing on androids and their place in future society. It is set in an unspecified year on a desert colony planet, dominated by an oppressive state known as the Empire. The protagonist, Cila, is an operative and negotiator working in a special police unit tasked in dealing with malfunctioning or rebellious androids – a role that is a culmination of her troubled past and a painful fall from grace as a celebrated soldier in Imperial Spec-Ops formations. Demotivated and depressed, Cila barely manages to perform her duties and her miserable routine is only disturbed by her friend, Yoko, gifting her a replacement for her broken companion android – Mara, a machine that feels more human than most people in the corrupt city she lives in.

Neo Cab

Neo Cab

Capra, sometimes a pax wants a human driver.

We finally have the two taxi games that were announced at last year’s E3. Night Call was the first to be released a couple months ago and now we finally have Neo Cab. Funnily enough, while Neo Cab was shown first it ended up releasing second. Let’s see how this one fares as we go into the future.

In Neo Cab, you play as Lina right before she arrives at Los Ojos with her few belongings and her trusty cab. While Lina would be more comfortable at Cactus Flats, the need to reconnect with her best friend, Savy, propels her forward. Why doesn’t Lina want to be at Los Ojos? Well, it turns out that it’s home to a tech company called Capra. Years ago, Lina worked with them as a cab driver, but as technology advanced, Capra switched out human drivers for self-driving cars. Not ready to stop driving people around, Lina went to get employed by Neo Cab. Now, Lina is one of the few human drivers left in Los Ojos as Capra tries to push their competition away.

Let’s get that out of the way first: I enjoyed the conversations with the passengers a lot. They’re sometimes funny, unexpected, deal with certain issues and represent a good spectrum of people. Obviously every single one has one issue or another and there’s no one that just lets you drive, but that’s what the game is about, so there’s no arguing that.

The main story however is your run of the mill dystopia with a big evil megacorp, nothing to write home about. It’s good enough to keep you interested. I hated the Savy character, but that’s actually a plus. She’s written that way and after having all too recent experience with this kind of person it hit a bit close to home. Props to the devs to how it’s handled and that you even get to ditch her, even though that particular scene comes across like a (repetitive) minigame.

2064: Read only Memories is a sci-fi point and click game set in the same universe as the Bartending Visual Novel as Va-11 Hall-A. I wouldn’t lie. At first i was drawn towards this game because it share the same setting with Valhalla. As i played the game, i came to realize this game can absolutely stand on its own with its own compelling story to tell.

Story

2064: ROM is set few years Before Valhalla. Aside from few references and cameos, it is absolutely its own stand alone stories. fan of valhalla will appreciate the little details put in the world, from a major news corporations to drink names in bars. if you aren’t, this game is still worth it to play as it offer a great story on its own.

DIVINATION

DIVINATION

This game disturbs me a little bit and I love it for that. I guess I should call it a visual novel because the only real thing you do is decide how to arrange the runes your patrons select, but even that little act can be a quite an experience depending on how into it you can get. What could this rune mean, what order do they actually go in, can I actually reverse the fortune by moving this one?

It’s very short (like 20 minutes tops) to go through a single time and the English text could use a bit touching up in a few spots, but for the cost of a soda or candy bar I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys the genre.

This is a very short game with only 4 characters but each divination change the outcome whoch makes the story very interesting. After the first round, you can use the flowchart to pick the options you decide and see the result, I do encourage you to not necessarily focus on the 100% chaos but to try to see how each result has an impact with the ending.

The 100% Chaos ending is really interesting, it reminded me a LOT of Chobits (not the animated version) as the plots turns a lot around the fact the robots don’t have the choice to live or to die.

A simple game in which you are presented by a continuous flow of events to which you respond in one of two ways: which either decreases or increases one or more of the 6 key stats (5 “factions” plus the “board” stat). The goal is balancing each stat as if one drops low enough, the game ends. Those that played Reigns should be familiar with the system and might enjoy a simpler cyberpunk version of it.

Twilight Town: A Cyberpunk Day In Life

Twilight Town: A Cyberpunk Day In Life

It definitely ends way too early, it feels like the story just cuts off before it can get into the nitty-gritty. But in terms of worldbuilding and presentation, Sigyaad Team has definitely laid the groundwork for something potentially outstanding. I’m really proud to see them strive for this level of polish considering before this they were making meme games with stock Ren’Py assets; not that there’s anything wrong with that good fun of course, but something like this is a lot more immersive. I’d love to see this as a full game, or at least an episodic series. Aside from that, all I have is minor grammar nitpicks. Nice job!

TL;DL:

  • Linear Visual Novel (single “ending”), w/ beautiful art, story is incomplete (I would say 20% of a full plot), but interesting enough to give it a shot.

PROS:

  • Visual style is stunning & beautiful. This is the strongest point, anime + pixel art = perfection :)

  • Character design is good enough, they have their own personality, girls seems to have and intriguing back story. MC looks little generic though.

  • World design is so cool, makes u want to explore the whole city and even more

Bionic Heart

Bionic Heart

I honestly didn’t think that I’ll find this game to my liking. But I did.

Visual novel is a very specific genre. Developer of the game should create the atmosphere of the world, vivid characters with different personalities and provide an interesting story. Developer of “Bionic Heart” succeded, in general. Here is why.

First of all, the atmosphere of the world. In “Bionic Heart” you’ll be walking the streets of futuristic London with it’s modern technologies all over the place. You’ll find out that the change of climate really altered lifestyle of future people. Constant rains actually fit the setting, creating the tone of sadness and tension. All these things really put you in this world, so you don’t feel too distant.

Figuring I would check out Bionic Heart a bit while farming cards, I loaded up the game and started reading through the first chapter. Eight hours and 24 achievements later, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.

Bionic Heart isn’t the best visual novel I’ve ever played, there are certainly issues that prevent it from being more, but it has a charm that I wasn’t expecting. The game’s greatest strength is in the sheer number of choices you’re given and the many branching narratives that result. Discovering them all and winding your way through different story paths is truly where the fun lies.
