Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director’s Cut

Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director’s Cut

A personal favorite.

Definitely a more accessible game than its predecessors, but retains the beautiful pseudoscience that made the first one so fun. Once again you play as an augmented super-agent. Once again you can pacifist run the game, and once again you can choose to interpret that as a challenge to knock every enemy unconscious and stuff them into an air vent. The game is notionally a “shooter” and there are a lot of guns, but the game clearly wants you to play as a stealth ninja.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is an immersive stealth/action adventure game, where you’re a detective in a Cyberpunk setting. And that’s all I want to tell you about the plot of this game, because Deus Ex has one of the most interesting game plots I’ve had the pleasure of playing. Gunplay and stealth are basic, but the verity of options to tackle infiltration is what makes the game interesting to play. Character models and animations aren’t the best, and the controls are wack, but you can rebind the controls so its kind of a non issue. Overall I really enjoyed my time with Deus Ex: Human Revolution, I’m excited to see what the sequel & prequel have to offer. 8/10 Great Title

Square Enix decided not make any more Deus Ex games because this didn’t sell Call of Duty numbers. Thanks, Square Enix, now you have zero games I give a shit about.

Absolutely love the series. Played the original two (Deus Ex, and Invisible war), and the “recent” two (Human Revolution and Mankind Divided) Story is so brilliantly well done, and you are actually influencing outcomes and changes to the story. Don’t set Mankind Divided to use DirectX12 tho as I had issues. Lots of figuring out how to get around things… be patient as you will usually find multiple alternate ways to deal with missions. Sadly may be ages before anything continues with the series as is a massive undertaking to produce games with intricate story-lines and branches like this I am sure.

Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition

Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition

The narrative of this game is absolutely frightening. When I first played it some years ago, I was blown away by the attention to detail and twists and turns of the story. When I replayed it more recently, I instead felt that I was looking out my bedroom window, as though the writers had seen the future. I don’t know where Warren Spector is hiding his time machine, but I’d love to have a chat with him about it.

As for the game itself: if you’re willing to deal with some truly awful gunplay and some questionable controls, this is easily one of the greatest games ever made. It’s extremely difficult for me to describe the amazing feeling that comes from playing a good immersive sim; being able to hack specific ATM accounts because you read someone’s personal notes, reading newspaper articles that describe and flesh out the world just like a good book, the choices you have when it comes to conversations and interactions with both main characters and side characters; it all feels so real. I’ve truly never felt anything like it. I realize how cheesy that sounds, but I simply don’t have the talent for putting into words how incredible this game is underneath the dated exterior.

Invisible, Inc.

Invisible, Inc.

“Invisible, Inc.” is a one-of-a-kind and an instant classic. As a turn-based strategy game, it requires a high level of planning and strategy to succeed. This is compounded by the “rouguelike” aspect of the game, meaning that you are not allowed to reload a previous save if you screw up. Depending on the difficulty level you choose, you may either have the ability to retry the level, use a limited number of “rewinds” which bring you back to the beginning of the previous turn, or, on “ironman mode,” have no safety net at all, meaning if you lose your team it is time to start a new game.

This game has given me more than 80 hours of joy (with many more to come), and it’s time for me to give back.

I would like to preface by saying I got this game on sale during the last Winter sale. Was it worth $7 including DLC? Absolutely. Is it worth $24 with said DLC? Debateable, depending on how much you’re sold on this game before buyinig it. Invisible Inc. is an amalgamation of many different things that I love in video games. It’s a procedurally-generated, turn-based stealth game with a cyberpunk aesthetic.

Republique

Republique

all in all its not a BAD game. in some ways it really pretty ok. the writing is pretty solid, the characters interesting and sympathetic, or deplorable but somewhat understandable, and mechanics not bad. its sort of a point and click old school adventure game mixed with a 3d stealth hunter, but with very little “combat.” the sound is pretty good, the music not bad, and the voice acting ranging from quite good to pretty ok. in many ways i actually DO recommend the game.

where the game lags is in pacing and stability/smoothness. its a pretty slow going game (as many stealth games are) but often at least with these you have a better saving mechanic to keep you from having to run the same puzzle-like timing gauntlet over and over until you finally pull it off, and not really because you dont know what to do as much as it can take many tries to actually do it.

Republique * 8/10

I never, EVER buy any game on day one. They’re priced ridiculously too high. And another good reason to never buy on day one is because the game might not be complete, whole, especially if it has an episodic structure. I’ve been keeping an eye on this game for so long and I’ve read lots of complaints for the way Camouflaj handled the product while working on other OS and platform ports but, even if these problems probably have been true, I never noticed any of this as I’ve started playing almost 1 year after the release of episode 5. And that’s pretty soon for me.

Vulto

Vulto

The city of Hevland went through many revolutions, but not without its costs. Powerful corporations turned the city into chaos in an attempt to control the government and monopolize the technology, resulting in an event called the Black Hole.

Engel Dekker survived in the now dangerous and violent city, living in the shadows of the streets and stealing supplies. When stepping in to do a heroic action for a change, he meets a Vulto, a kind of special agent who operates in the shadows to minimize violence and revert the damage Hevland suffered, and decides to go through heavy training to become one of them.

Aerannis

Aerannis

Aerannis is a Metroidvania platformer set in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv. With the rest of the world having been more or less destroyed and depopulated, what remains in Plovdiv is a dystopian and authoritarian post-revolutionary society in which all men have been forced to transition to women through hormone replacement therapy, and are for this reason discriminated against by the populace and government at large, being negatively denoted as “Snowflakes” The game sees you take control of Ceyda Fahri, an assassin, and more or less focuses around Cedya’s plight as a hired gun in Plovdiv.

This is why we can’t have nice things.

So, funny story. I saw the KS for Aerannis and thinking hey, dystopian metroidvania w/a trans lady protagonist? :allears: ….but I couldn’t back it at the time, so I forgot about it til I stumbled onto a 50% off coupon. Pretty soon I heard vague iffy things and that V ETHICAL BACKER CONTENT got shoved into the game and i suddenly got suuuuper apprehensive about my purchase, but i figured hey, i should at least give it a chance, right?

NOPE WRONG

This is a post-feminist dystopia where “listen and believe” (as in the Anita Sarkeesian quote - ‘one of the most radical things you can do is to actually believe women when they tell you about their experiences’) shows up in the same cycle of wackyyyy turbofeminist dystopian PSAs as “CAREFUL, MEN EXIST” and “zero tolerance, zero thought, it’s so easy” and something about trangst.

Deus Ex: The Fall

Deus Ex: The Fall

Deus Ex: The Fall should be taken for what it is. A mobile entry into the Deus Ex Universe. Admittedly, I’m a fan of the universe and getting another chance to play in this world, is something I am always looking forward to. So there may be some bias.

One thing that must first be noted, is that this game is a direct port from Mobile. If you look at what the game offers from a mobile perspective, it’s pretty amazing. I wouldn’t actually want to play it on mobile, as I can’t imagine pulling off some of the stuff I do with just gestures, but hey, more power to those who want to.

After completing a masterpiece Human Revolution and writing review on it, it seemed that there was only Mankind Divided left on the horizon and that’s all, the series is complete! But no! There was one more game that is rarely talked about (like with Invisible War) – Deus Ex: The Fall. Many told me that this is crap, but it is the direct sequel to the Deus Ex: Icarus Effect book, which I liked. So, like with Invisible War, I decided to check myself, what this game is, and… things turned to be no so simple…

Metrocide

Metrocide

Oh man, I really like the concept of the game. Because of that, I also really want to recommend it. Unfortunately I can’t; the average player would rip their own arm off and beat their monitor to pieces.

First off, the good:

-Cool gameplay idea

-Cool setting

-GTA 1/2 style overhead view

-Lots of variety in contracts

The bad:

-Terrible, terrible AI

-The controls kind of suck

-Starting weapon is extremely shitty

-Lots of bugs

-Lots of crashes

-The AI’s so bad it deserves another spot

-The last zone the player unlocks isn’t very fun

Real player with 16.1 hrs in game

Metrocide is an interesting, yet simple to learn game set in a dystopian world with plenty of flavour to it. The player takes on the role of a contract killer who needs to earn money to skip town. To do so, as his or her job title implies, they take contracts to end the lives of their targets without being shot by cops, vigilantes, gang members, paranoid targets or their bodygaurds. While at this, they will need to hide the bodies to prevent the police from increasing the priority coverage of the zone they are in and they will need to kill without leaving witnesses - Or risk being hunted by police drones which eliminate criminals without any remorse or trial. This leaves oppertunities, however. Should you pull out your gun and show it to a paranoid target, the target may open fire at you first. Vigilantes will do the dirty work for you, and citizens will give your target’s description to the police instead of yours. Then when they all ran, nobody will be around to identify you as the killer when you shoot back.

NEON STRUCT

NEON STRUCT

For anyone who’s a huge admirer of Thief like I am, this is a definite recommend! While it is a rather low-budget, small scale game, it has enough of its own vibe and does not outstay its welcome to become boring. I will attempt to sum up my feelings on it in more detail. (Possible spoilers ahead?)

Mechanically , it directly borrows light gem and surface materials elements from Thief. I love that! The experience of “reading a room” for isles and pathways that are safe to run on or stay in (and having to dynamically think through affordances of illumination and sound) never gets old and is unfortunately missing from most modern stealth games.

Real player with 17.2 hrs in game

NEON STRUCT is a game for those who like first-person stealth, and don’t care about graphics or story. It’s not exactly that it’s a bad game; I did play it to completion. But thinking back, there’s little that stands out positively, and the experience never really gripped me.

The gameplay is probably the strongest part of NEON STRUCT. The game is divided into self-contained missions, each with a couple of goals such as stealing an item or deleting data from a computer. The levels are moderately sized with a progressively increasing number and variety of guards, security cameras and similar obstacles to overcome. There’s some freedom in approach; for example, you can steal keycards from patrolling guards, knock the guards out first, or hack the door with a Breakout mini-game; and all levels feature multiple routes to explore.
