Conglomerate 451

Conglomerate 451

Hey guys,

TLDR: If you like dungeon crawlers, especially futuristic (ala Starcrawlers) there is a good chance you will like this game too.

Conglomerate 451 is set in and under (water) a cyberpunk style city. Actually my favourite map is the ‘entry’ cityscape. I love the look and the rain/water effects are pretty nice. Would liked to have had missions based in an offshoot of the outdoor area but currently all missions are enclosed. After the tutorial mission you can skip this part and head straight to the mission, which i do not recommend as buffs and map hacks and shopping can be done in the city and can make the mission itself more rewarding and easier.

*** this Review has been updated after the developer addressed some of the issues. It’s good to see that they are listening to feedback and including suggestions in their process****

This game. . . First off, I haven’t played as much as it shows. I leave games on overnight etc. so. . . I’ve played a little over four hours. . . too long to get my money back and just long enough for this game’s deep flaws to become unbearable for me. I can’t recommend this game to picky gamers. Here’s how it broke down for me:

Short version: You can die in the tutorial. Hardcore! 10/10!!!

Long version: This game is the long lost cousin of King’s Field, if it was a sci-fi title made for the Virtual Boy. As such, those looking for shiny graphics and twitchy gameplay should stay away: the game’s unique art style looks blocky (although in exchange it works with a toaster, if you can read this you can play it), it’s a turn-based dungeon-crawled that demands patience to be played.

The sound effects are okay, nothing special in my opinion, but they do their job. The music though, it’s something else: It perfectly conveys the nightmarish, claustrophobic survival horror scenario that the author wanted to convey.

Laser-focused, ultra-minimalistic dungeon crawler. Think id’s mid-to-late 00s mobile RPGs (Orcs & Elves, Doom RPG, Wolfenstein RPG) their slim frame further stripped down of tissue so that the mere bone of combat, resource management and exploration remains. There are no crutches here, nothing placed at one’s disposal is superfluous or optional - one really must master what mechanics there are. Tutorial mustn’t be skipped.

The presentation is just as spartan yet equally put to just the desired use, minimal wireframe visuals supported by excellent soundtrack conveying this desolate, claustrophobic feeling.

StarCrawlers

StarCrawlers

StarCrawlers - a sci-fi first person party-based dungeon crawler with turn-based combat.

Flavor - Shadowrun in space.

In short, a surprisingly solid crawler with impressive polish that delivers what’s expected of the genre with more charm than normal. An easy recommend at its price.

More things to know:

1. Fun class variety. Soldier, Engineer, Cyber-ninja, Smuggler, Void Psyker, Force Psyker, Hacker, and a special optional companion class recruited via mission. Each has a different resource and gimmicks along with three talent trees. Party size limit of 4, but you can recruit all classes and rotate as needed.

Introduction: (Click Read More and scroll to bottom to see the shortened version)

After spending 70+ hours and hitting L100 in StarCrawlers on Hardcore I felt that I had enough experience to write a review, so let’s begin.

What is StarCrawlers? Well, StarCrawlers is a sci-fi dungeon crawler that puts you in the shoes of a Crawler in a galaxy where megacorps control the lives of the billions teeming in the galaxy. What does being a Crawler entail? Well, every now and then corps need a few dirty jobs done in order to expand and Crawlers are often the individuals they contact in order to do so. If you’ve ever played Shadowrun, this universe gives similar vibes.

Rapture

Rapture

Classic roguelike game, many characters available, a lot of different abilities, power-ups, encounters. Every run of the game is different from the previous.

Very challenging fights, you need to carefully organize your team and your moves otherwise it will be very difficult to win, there’s also an easy mode for more relaxed games.

Really nice soundtrack, I hope new tracks will be added in the future!

Do you like turn based action? Do you like Rogue-Lites games? Why not mash them together? That’s what you get in this incredibly addictive and fun game. There are plenty of characters to choose from with vastly different playstyles, allowing for many way to experiment and different ways to play. It’s honestly just tons of fun and I highly recommend it!

Changed the review to positive, the dev fixed a lot of the issues I mentioned.

Like yeah the AI is still basic, its a bit asset reliant (the zombies used for the corpses for example) and it could still use a bit of optimization on some sections but it’s a single dev and I absolutely didn’t know he was working alone when I made my review.

The only thing that really annoy me rn is that if you shoot a dinosaur in the head from behind, the hit will not register as a headshot, so you will have to shoot him another time from the front to kill him and that’s pretty risky.

Real player with 32.3 hrs in game

this game is a very amazing dino shooting/horror game because of the whole inventory system and the way the dinosaurs die but there is one fault, when you go to the last stand area with the other survivors you have two choices: fight alongside with them against the endless amount of raptors and die or blow a hole in the wall so everyone can escape with a C4. i chose option 2 but when i detonated the C4 there was no hole in the wall at all and there was not a single scratch on it it was still in perfect condition and no matter what the wall can take 4 C4’s and still stay in one piece so i restarted the game and got back to where i was and when i detonated the C4 it still stood in one piece so can you please fix that? it would help me so much in the game if you do that. but other than the whole C4 not doing any damage to the wall thing i would definitely recommend this to other players.

Der Geisterjäger / The Ghost Hunter

Der Geisterjäger / The Ghost Hunter

You know the expression “handling something with kid gloves”?

Yeah, Der Geisterjäger does - except its “kid gloves” are boxing gloves with horseshoes in them.

Basically, DGJ is a mecha dungeon crawler that not only isn’t afraid of being “unfair”, it actually incorporates savescumming as a canonical ability for your main character - something like precognition from Katana Zero, if you will. “This is only a dream” is a sentence that, if you, like me, are not a particularly sharp tactical mind, you’ll get used to seeing. A lot.

Real player with 20.6 hrs in game

Der Geisterjager is a lot like Der Geisterturm, but better in every way. More enemy variety, interesting environmental challenges, and new hazards to deal with that aren’t mines. Along with quality of life improvements you should expect from continued development.

The single most important change is the addition of the credit system, you gain money for killing enemies now and the credits allow you upgrade your RCS as you see fit at repair stations dotted about the dungeons, creating an agency that the previous two games lacked while providing a much greater replay value.

Earth’s Shadow

Earth’s Shadow

Earth’s Shadow is a third person action Sci-Fi dungeon crawler set in the year 3081 on planet Sumbra; a remote alien planet where legends of valuable relics surround this black world, calling to the greedy and brave explorers seeking a bright future… but end up uncovering an even darker past.

Working a dead-end job… Alexi-Ru, a cyborg CSP (cargo ship pilot), tends to fill the void-ness of his boring flight job by day-dreaming of the mysterious stories surrounding planet Sumbra, aka Earth’s Shadow.

In the year 3081, the original Earth and it’s galaxy has been dead for centuries, and although a few humans still exist, colonized in far away sectors… Earth’s legacy is not forgotten with some even referring to Sumbra, as the shadow of Earth.

Intrigued by Earth’s history, Alexi-Ru often finds himself flying millions of light-clicks off his normal cargo route just to speed by the mysterious planet, hoping to catch a glimpse of something on the alien surface via radar that might force him to slow down or possibly even stop.

Eventually Alexi-Ru’s curiosity is justified when his ship encounters a malfunction one night, while passing by the tiny planet, forcing him to crash-land on the surface he dreamed of so often on previous flights.

Alexi-Ru remembers his attention right before the impending crash, focused on an un-jostled book, thrown from a compartment during the violent atmosphere re-entry, titled… “When Day-Dreams Turn To Nightmares”

“That doesn’t mean anything,” mumbles Alexi-Ru, trying to re-assure himself as he arms himself with a Tec-9000 semi-automatic and sets forth to explore… Earth’s Shadow.

Review updated to better reflect the developer’s efforts

RoboPhobik is a decidedly basic overhead shooter with a sprinkling of features found in other genres. You play as one of several characters as you traverse a city populated by robots to rescue other humans and defeat the big boss PAL 9000. While interesting in concept, the execution is not the best and some features are rather basic. I think the best comparison is to certain games from the rogue-lite genre, specifically the indie game Dungeons of Dredmor or like Azure Dreams from the PS1, though this game does not feature the typical feature of losing all–or nearly all–progress when you die.

Arcaxer

This game is an extremely enjoyable, albeit very physical VR experience. There is a distinct ebb and flow to the combat this turn-based RPG provides, an element I was initially skeptical about. Having come from playing many VR titles with real time combat, I excepted a turn-based VR game to get tedious.

I was incorrect.

Your turn is spent selecting which of the eight abilities you can bring into battle you will use, determined by AP(action points), and expending them. You are free outside of battle to tailor your loadout at any time, providing the ability to incorporate new abilities on the fly, or tailor your kit for upcoming challenges. There is also melee combat which allows you to expend your health rather than your AP to attack, providing a way to mix up your choices in combat.

Real player with 56.5 hrs in game

A unique experience, one you would not expect from a VR game.

One of few VR games that run heavy against the VR trend of first-person EVERYTHING. Arcaxer plays like the third person RPG game with hawk-eye’s view. While there is the option to play through any part of the game in first-person, the hawk-eye’s view is an enjoyable experience, one reminiscent of watching a tabletop RPG playing out before you. Even the combat pays homage to classic RPG games. This is the only part of the game (to my knowledge) where you are limited to first-person perspective. The combat plays out with turn based systems similar to classic Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. Unlike those classical RPG games, however, you’re never stuck waiting for your enemies' turns. You will duck and dodge and you weave through incoming attacks. You will swing your blade and literally throw spells as you strike down your foes. Combat is turn-based, how you play is not.
