Walthros: Renewal

  • Three difficulty levels to accommodate a range of player abilities

Light Fairytale Episode 1

I originally bought this game out of boredom. Having played everything in my library over again looking for a refreshing narrative; something I could hover my cursor over and think, “this, this is well written.”

I eventually bought a kindle and put a Hiatus on gaming for several months, disappointed at the lack of any new titles containing a decent narrative. I initially broke this hiatus at the release of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and I was happy with what the game offered. Yet, still, the narrative end of the game felt passive and only served to augment the gameplay.

Definitely can’t recommend this game as a stand-alone, though that may change if/when he releases the complete story and bundles them together in some way. But as it stands, it is a very incomplete and barebones jrpg. But let’s start with some positives.

Positives

• Music: Definitely was the best part of this game. All the music sounds really good and enjoyable enough to listen to outside of the game.

• Setting: While it really does come off being a pretty generic jrpg world, it is interesting enough to keep your attention.

didn’t think I’d really get in to this game when I got it as part of the pack. it seemed a little boring and kind of predictable, but i found myself coming back to it often. there are definitely some issues. I have no idea what’s up with the online aspect of the game and unlocking new items and animals takes a while, considering this game is one I’d only play casually. but i cant really complain, i know sokpop churns out a lot of little games, and its still fun for what it is. definitely good for taking a break from work, or when you want a game that requires some strategy, but not too much thinking.

A nice game for cheap. Bought for $2 CDN and I’ll get that much worth out of it. However, there seems to be no one playing so the online portion (which is likely the main point of the game) is dead. They either need to adjust somethings so that playing it single players is more viable, or there just needs to be more people playing in order for this game to be really good.

100% Orange Juice

100% Orange Juice

I’m revamping this review, as my last one which I had made months ago was meant as a in-joke, which probably isn’t the ideal approach. So, where do I begin?

100% Orange Juice is a board game featuring characters across multiple games from the Japanese indie group daidai (who are better known as OrangeJuice among the populace). The game premise is to move around the board obtaining stars and/or wins from successful battles, which allow you to increase your Norma level, which in turn allows access to cards. Cards play a vast role in 100% Orange Juice by changing the scenarios in and outside of battle. Some common examples are having access to two dice for movement, healing yourself after a battle, and setting traps which can slow down other players. Due to the versatility of cards, you will find yourself always trying out different deck creations.

After many hours of play, I think it’s time I finally put in a review as a means of advice to potential buyers.

100% Orange Juice is good/challenging game that will give you many triumphs and tragedies. Many negative reviews you may read might say things like “games are very long and require almost no skill” or “you just throw dice”. I disagree with these sentiments entirely. If you intend to buy OJ, you need to understand it’s a very specific kind of game. This is a dice board game, where RNG and skill take center stage. If you intend to buy this game and assume you can master it and win every game, and have a perfect W/L ratio, prepare to be disappointed. It is impossible to master OJ and sometimes the game can be extremely upsetting. So why do people like me keep coming back?

Keen: One Girl Army

Keen: One Girl Army

Remember the obligatory ice puzzles in obligatory ice dungeons in all sorts of action-adventures, where your character only stops moving when they hit a wall or obstacle? Well this decribes Keen’s overall gameplay in a nutshell. But it’s not like that navigation ever gets annoying. The levels were designed in a way that this kind of traversial becomes only hard when it’s meant to be a puzzle, otherwise the path you can choose is usually obvious and after a short time you almost forget about the restrictive movement.

Game info:

First off, I need to say, Keen: One Army Girl is such a beautiful looking game.

You’ll play as a delightfully cantankerous 8-year-old named Kim, taking on & fighting a variety of enemies in a turn-based sliding puzzle with an intriguing story you want to learn more of. Kim can only move in a straight line, stopping only at the end or until something blocks her.

Rise of the Slime

Rise of the Slime

Rise of the Slime

You suddenly wake up as a small Slime and are told to go on a journey across the land to reclaim the throne…

Slay the Spire but with a slimy gooey twist

After playing the game for quite a while now I can say that I really enjoy it and every little aspect of it.

Art

The artstyle is a cute comic cutout style with almost everything being moved around on sticks like on a kids play which adds a unique charm to it. Small details like two extra arms holding up shields to signify block are just cute.

I was pleasantly surprised by this game. This is NOT just another carbon-copy deck builder.

Rise of the Slime feels a bit more casual than similar titles. I died less often, and combat encounters felt less swingy in general. You can expect to get much further in your runs, and to have more control over the cards in your deck.

The adorable graphics and setting are a huge bonus. Most deck builders take place in a highly gritty fantasy setting, and the adorable art style is a nice change of pace. It is also nice to walk through the world rather than click on rooms in a menu. There are even a few secrets with the interactable terrain.

This game will always hold a special place for me as the introduction of my kids to roguelikes. There’s no auto-explore here, it’s more “puzzle roguelike” than I’d really prefer, but it’s ideal for my 7, 10 and 13 year old to play and get far too much enjoyment out of. Add to that the developers are some of my favorites (I don’t know them personally, but they also make Caves of Qud, a roguelike that I enjoy quite a bit as well) and I can heartily recommend the game to most anyone dipping thier toe into roguelikes without knowing what all the fuss is about.

THE ONE-SENTENCE SUMMARY…

Okay at best, only somewhat charming, and worth a casual playthrough at most.

[➕] THE POSITIVES

  • The MUSIC. Is delightful. If anything, you’ll keep the volume turned up just to hear the cheery tunes as you play.

  • ENEMY VARIETY. Is nice! Each level serves as a foundation for the next, so the game is always building on itself all the way through to the end.

200% Mixed Juice!

After being totally surprised by the excellent Acceleration of Suguri 2, I was kinda hyped for this one. I thought they were gonna put an interesting spin on the card game/JRPG genre. Well… they didn’t.

It’s just an awful game, man. Let me count the ways.

So first off, the story is poop (as usual). It made absolutely no sense to me and honestly I just wanted them to stop talking. It was cool seeing all the characters from AoS 2, but I could care less seeing them under these circumstances.

Next up, I’m quoting this directly from the developer’s description of the game’s graphics…

Real player with 43.9 hrs in game

Bite-sized Pokémon-like JRPG starring characters from other Orange Juice games (i.e. Suguri, Sora, Flying Red Barrel, QP Shooting, 100% Orange Juice, etc.), with turn-based battles with teams of up to 3, an amusing excuse plot, a fun 8-bit chiptune soundtrack, an extensive but not too long single-player campaign, and multiplayer (with level limit options if you so choose). And there’s a twist in what you can do with the characters!

Like Pokémon, you’ll be collecting characters and using their abilities to battle. Characters have three types in a rock-paper-scissors scheme, and each character has generally two or three attacks which may be of any of these three types (there is no same-type attack bonus), and maybe a support/debuff move. Differs from Pokémon in that speed is determined by attack type – so dual KOs are actually very common, and the strategies to consider are quite different. (Specifically, the fastest-acting type tends to be least accurate and relatively weak, while the strongest type is the slowest.) There’s really a surprising amount of strategic depth in this game.

Fairy Fencer F

Fairy Fencer F

-GAMEPLAY-

Overall gameplay is close to the Hyperdimension Neptunia specifically Re;birth 1.

Recommended to be played using a controller.

Fairy Fencer F is a turn based role playing game.

Features up to 3 active members in the party.

Switching of members is allowed during a member’s turn.

“Weapon Boost” system allows players to make adjustments to a character’s stats using “Weapon Points(WP)” which can be earned through battles.

Support characters known as “Fairies” are collectible throughout the game. This support characters can be equipped to your party members and can give them passive skills and stat boosts according to the “Fairy” you equipped to them. Of course, 1 “Fairy” per party member only. They vary from Rank C being the lowest and Rank S being the highest and they can level up to level 10. The number of passive skills they provide and the boosts they give to stats increases as they level up.

While this game suffers from a good amount of flaws (see below for details), it still manages to be an enjoyable experience.

I’ll be speaking numbers and mechanics so you get to know exactly what to expect from this product, and whether it’s for you or not.

If you’ve played other games from this developer (like the Neptunia series), you can expect lots of similar aspects.

### The good points :

  • Fairy Fencer F takes about 25 hours to complete, and about 60 hours to get all achievements (I’m nearly there, so it’s an estimate). This is a decent amount of time for an RPG, and at this price point, it’s quite reasonable.
