Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet

Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet

I’ve LP’d the previous installment , Kickstarted the sequel, and was rather looking forward to this. Let’s break down my impressions, from least important to the most:

Graphics: I kinda miss the original hand-drawn look. It had a unique charm to it that the smoother and less unique 3d models lack.

Voicework: Quite good all around. Except from some British TV guy – apparently everyone were so excited to have him on that they forgot to check whether his voice fits the character.

As I have been following the game’s author’s main work for a while, (which I would highly recommend to most people on the planet) I finally brought myself to buying the game during a sale. The drawing style is simple, but atmospheric, the voice-acting is mostly superb and the few birds one gets to see up close are truly adorable. The highlight of the game definitely are the song-bits, which are completely insane and oddly catchy. Bought it during a sale and thought it was quite sweet. Especially for a game both written and animated by someone who, as far as I understand, only dabbles in game-development.

IWOCon 2021

This is a phenomenal first step!

So, to be clear, I am some one who helps the developer of one of the games that has a booth in this. But my review won’t be for how that particular booth looks or impacts made to the awareness of it. My review is for the entire thing for the indie scene.

I’ll start with negatives that are most likely shared by others at this point:

  • Bugs and glitches

  • Trailers are low quality streaming

  • Islands are lifeless

  • No multiplayer

  • Some people are unable to play the game without severe frame rate issues

Disappointing is the best word to describe this. I sat through this because I love indie games, I actively go through twitter every Saturday night looking at new ones to add to my wishlist/follow on twitter/ or just watch the development of.

To any normal person they would have stopped 5 mins into this and said “well this is an ugly shit show” and then uninstall but I’m willing to wade through lots of shit to find a diamond in the rough but this broke me.

TLDR; Just go on to twitter and look up the hashtag #ScreenShotSaturday if you wanna find indie games instead of wrestling with this this.

Sok Pirates

This is a quintessential Sokpop game: Simple mechanics done decently well with a small scope and cute graphics.

Watch the trailer. You can plan on about an hour’s worth of that, give or take.

Recommended at a price point you’re comfortable with for ~1 hour playtime on your first playthrough.

P.S. I encountered a bug in one of my runs where the locked chests were empty. Unfortunately, if you encounter this, your best course of action is to restart and hope it doesn’t happen next time.

Alistair Beckett King is a delight to the senses and an artist of experiences. Excellent comedy styles of wit, word play and niche novelty soaks through into the games humor and cleverness. Excellent point and click, good difficulty level without feeling lead by the nose or frustrated with clues. I love the characters which you get a feel from first interaction - concise and memorable. I loved Nelly Cootalot The Fowl Fleet so much I got it on PC and Android - so when I heard this was coming to Steam it was immediately on my wishlist and thoroughly requested.

Short Answer:

A short but sweet labor of love that hearkens back to the pirate-themed point & click puzzle games of the past. Not too easy but not too hard, with just enough of that “point & click” logic to make puzzles interesting but not impossible to solve. The campy voice acting adds a good bit of charm to the equally campy British humor, though not every joke is guaranteed to land (fair warning, not all are age-appropriate despite its kid-friendly look). Only takes a few hours to beat, but the price tag is low enough to justify the short experience–and revenue is donated to a bird conservation charity to help sweeten the deal.

Captain Sabertooth and the Magic Diamond

Captain Sabertooth and the Magic Diamond

Reminiscent of beloved side scroller games like Donkey Kong, Captain Sabertooth is truly a pleasure to play. The cutscenes were beautiful to watch, and some of the backgrounds were gorgeous. I especially loved scenes where you could see the pirate ship in the background, so detailed!

Controls were smooth and easy to navigate, the character actually had weight to it, making it easy to navigate jumps and tricky areas.

I especially enjoyed some of the functions like the map, where if I got lost I could steer my way back, and find where quests were.

got it for my nephew who'#s coming to stay soon. Last time he was here he enjoyed watching me play crash bandicoot but it was a bit much for him. Naturally gave it a whirl. Nice graphic flow and a it doesnt punish failure which is good for a tounger game. Cool thing to explore may have to “help” him as an excuse to have more time on it. Quality

Captains of the Wacky Waters

Captains of the Wacky Waters

Captains of the Wacky Waters is a fast-paced boat roguelike where ships drift and krakens wear moustaches!

Back in the day, helping ghosts get to Heaven was an easy task, but someone wiped out the peace in the Wacky Waters and now all the captains have to learn to defend themselves and their crew. At least until the old days return.

Combine the strength of your rowers and the wind force to navigate around the procedurally generated zones, gradually improving your ship and finding powerful configurations that will help you in combat.

KEY FEATURES

  • Every playthrough is different, allowing a lot of replayability.

  • Good vibes roguelike with loads of wackiness and weirdness.

  • Unlock new playable captains after defeating them. Each ship has different features and a special ability to play with.

  • Save cute little ghosts that will join the crew taking one out of the 6 different roles to help you in your journey.

  • Use many weapons to shoot and slash your enemies, including a cannonball shotgun, a boats cannon, or a giant hammer.

  • Lots of gadgets and upgrades. These are curious and diverse items with different functions to upgrade and configure your ship, from a medieval spear to a pair of giant incognito glasses for your boat.

  • Navigate different zones with unique gameplay styles and aesthetics, which will become more and more strange.

  • Many, many hats! Every living thing in the game wears its own type of hat.

The Zwuggels - A Beach Holiday Adventure for Kids

Although he’s a little young to manage the mouse, our 22-month-old Smol Owlbear loves playing Zwuggels on a touchscreen, so much so that we’ve bought it for additional platforms.

The characters are charming - especially Nico - and the mini-games that make up each level of the game almost all hit the sweet spot between interactive toys and intellectual challenges for young kids,

I love the multi-lingual text, as it gives our family a chance to do some reading in a couple of the languages we use, in a refreshing format.

Score – 8/10 (Recommended)

If you don’t care if an interactive storybook doesn’t read itself, there’s a lot to like about The Zwuggels: the game is a hoot for four and five-year-olds, it has superb artwork and it’s a great opportunity for you and your child to bond as you explore the adventure together. Recommended if you’re a parent seeking a family-friendly precursor to point ‘n’ click adventures for children.

Ink Plane

Ink Plane

The game is fine. I enjoyed my experience with it.

It is clear that the developer put a lot of effort in the art style. The airplanes, ships and tanks were lovely crafted. Also, the option to play with the “day or night” background was another example of how much attention was put to the art style.

I loved the classical music of the levels, and the sound effects of the game were OK, too.

The only thing that prevents me from giving it a perfect score is that the game was too short. I mean, the levels are challenging and well designed, but it only took me 1 hour to beat the game with day and night background, even if that was only a cosmetic change. However, I think that, for being the first project ever by the developer, it was a nice job.

Good game, i enjoyed it.

Could not stop until i reached the end of all 3 levels.

Lasted 81 minutes lol, but still a descent game for the price.

maybe the levels will be longer in the future, who knows.
