A Gummy’s Life

A Gummy’s Life

If the only thing they did was a carbon-copy remake of Gang Beasts with just a ‘splatter’ like they have for the punches, it would have been worth at least a dollar. There was that, and so much more, and my kids (7 & 10) absolutely loved it!

I find it way less boring than gang beasts with all the bot options and the much, much more interactive environments. Matches rarely last more than 1 1/2 minutes. A+.

Some comments from the children –- “I like that there’s more ways to die.”

Some comments from Dad — “I like that there’s bots out the wazoo, and that way I don’t have to pick one of the two children to go after and end up falling off the edge holding them.”

This is a very entertaining game, from the ragdoll physics to beating up your friends. However, it isn’t for everyone, and has major problems.

While I would still recommend the game, the game is not without flaws, which I think many wouldn’t be able to overlook. Most notably would be the large amount of bugs and glitches. Many maps have areas the players can climb out of, instantly killing them. Others have environmental backdrops the players can clip through. There are also many physics-based problems that could potentially throw someone off the map and ruin their experience. However, many of these glitches are funny enough to not cause any frustration.

Escaping Hell

It’s a fun indie game that mixes up its presentation and has a unique sense of style. I like the theme of being kind to yourself and how the gameplay supports that.

This is not a beautiful game but it was created with a lot of heart, is fun and I appreciate that.

Hamsterdam

Hamsterdam

I have to say I am surprised this game only has 42 steam reviews. While its by no means a perfect game it is a fun QTE with some platforming elements that is fairly addictive. If you wanted to breeze through it the difficulty is not that hard beyond for a few bosses however if you want to 3 star all 30 levels and get each optional objective it adds some more challenge and playtime. I like games like this where you play a hour or so and when the game starts feeling repetitive you stop playing until you have a itch to go back to it.

I got to try out Hamsterdam at EGX Rezzed in April this year, and, after giving it a good go and falling in love with the cute characters and art style, and winning a pin badge after beating a boss without getting hit, my housemate getting the plushie of Pimm, and getting free stickers, I was super excited to be able to play the full game on release. I did enjoy it, but here’s my honest list of pros and cons. TLDR at the bottom.

Pros:

  • Lovely art style with adorable characters – this was one of the big factors for buying this, for me.

SNK HEROINES Tag Team Frenzy

SNK HEROINES Tag Team Frenzy

First and foremost, huge thanks to Abstraction Games for bringing SNK Heroines to Steam. Really appreciate it.

Things I like:

The way your health and meter for special moves are tied together.

  • It forces you to actively think about how you are going to use your special moves and when you should tag in your other character. For instance, if your opponent’s health is low enough to hit them with a finishing blow but your first character doesn’t have enough meter, you can do a combo to tag in your other character and finish them off instead. This gives the game a lot of depth, because you have to manage your meter carefully in order to win. Killing your opponent with your super is mandatory, so you can’t ignore this aspect of the game.

Is this like KOF?

No.

Is it like Street Fighter?

Nope.

Okay, is it at least DOA???

Well, if you’re asking if SNK girls in sexy outfits will be pummeling each other, then sure. But this isn’t your normal fighting game. Some people will either love or hate it. I own it on the Nintendo SWITCH and have been playing SNK Heroines since it came out. My girlfriend and I absolutely LOVE this game. We play pretty much all the current top fighters out there, but this one is definitely a unique, couch co-op blast. I really want to stress that if you are looking for a tactical fighter like Tekken, look elsewhere. This one is all about absurdity. It’s the kind of game you play with your honey or your buddies where losing can be pretty hilarious and just as fun as winning.

Arcana Heart 3 LOVEMAX SIXSTARS!!!!!! XTEND

Arcana Heart 3 LOVEMAX SIXSTARS!!!!!! XTEND

Warning: The netcode is delay based and current population of regulars is maybe 10 people max (including myself) who are pretty chill but kinda insular, who also happen to have solid connections with each other (mostly). The patch notes for Xtend are available, but the Mizuumi section for Xtend is largely barren. The game is also apparently tied to your monitor refresh and needs to be capped through external methods. The training is lackluster and does not not natively have a input display.

Turn back now if these factors are a turn off, or just plain inconvenient - which is entirely reasonable.

This has probably been my favorite surprise-release of 2017, at least in the fighting game genre, since I had no idea this game existed, let alone was going to be released.

Now, despite the fact that I am a big fan of games like Nitro+, UNIEL, Aquapazza, Melty, etc, I never really got into AH3LM. The main reason was likely because, at the time I picked it up on Steam, barely anyone played, and those who did would body someone like me before I could even confirm anything. The other problem was, while I could get my friends interested enough to try out BlazBlue, or UNIEL, or even Nitro+, for some reason, no one would give AH3LM a try for some reason. So, since I was limited to continual training for the off chance of an online match, or single player modes, I had pretty much dropped the game, except for the occasional itch for something different.

Simple concept, really easy to understand and reminds me of the good old days of coach multiplayer games ! Just grab some friends, launch the game and have fun. Rounds are quick, always surprising and fun.

The visuals are really nice, it has this really enjoyable atmosphere. Oh and the music is perfect too !

The game is easy to play remotely with friends over Steam so that’s amazing !

I had already played the demo and lots of improvements have been made since then so… I highly recommend it !

I made the first review when I had about 20 hours of playtime in total. Now it’s… a little bit more, but still not 7k. Anyway, I now have rights to say everything I think about the game.

First, I want to start with singleplayer, which is not where you are supposed to spend a lot time. When you are a new player, it will be a perfect place to start learning. As for me, I think it offers pretty challenging battles with CPU, and also CPU can teach you some basic stuff like simple combos and movement. Do NOT ignore singleplayer if you have just started, be it story, arcade or match mode.

Right out of the gate:

As a casual game, I would highly recommend AoS2. It’s an extremely fun 1-versus-1 game that combines the best of the shoot em’ up genre and the fighting game genre for an explosive experience that no other game has replicated. But as a competitive game, I would not recommend AoS2. The metagame at a higher level is extremely unbalanced, both in character balance and in matchup dynamics, and gravitates towards defense and timeout to the point where not interacting with your opponent is the ideal.
