Hayfever

Hayfever

Good Dustforce/Celeste inspired platformer.

(+) Good level of challenge without being frustrating (for the most part).

(+) Good learning and difficulty curve.

(+) Last world is a great challenge.

(+) Interesting use of the dash reset mechanic. The player will use the dash reset to do many of the plataforming challenges, it is interesting how they recontextualize the dash reset to be a environmental hazard in certain sections.

(-) The presentention can a be a bit gross sometimes, but nothing extreme like the binding of isaac.

Disclaimer: My scores/reviews are almost always based on having bought the game at close to the “lowest historical price” on steam at time of purchase.

Quick score: 5/5

Notes: Some of the level design and mechanics can feel slightly clunky at times, but overall great platformer with a ton of content. Game starts off deceptively easy but gets fairly challenging pretty quickly past the 1st world.

Music and visuals are great as well, but that should be apparent from the trailer.

One of the most underrated platformers on steam.

I loved this! The movement feels fast and fluid, similar to Sonic or Freedom Planet, but with its own twists with charging and sliding. When you start building up momentum and racing through the level, it just feels great. The art is adorable and the soundtrack is a legit banger. For the price, this is a steal, especially if you like classic platformers with an emphasis on collecting and speedrunning!

Primal Pursuit

Primal Pursuit

Primal Pursuit is an indie animal racer that supports up to 12 players and is a heap of fun with friends or in one of its offline modes such as the single player tournaments (against bots) or time trials (competing for leaderboard positions). It has an impressive art style with a nice selection of maps and unique animal’s to choose from. Each racer has their own set of abilities and playstyle, not to mention that the roster itself is made up of a pretty interesting, non-generic selection of species.

Followed Primal Pursuit through early development and managed to snag a tester key! (Have now Purchased)

I Played this game with my Niece and Nephew, both them and myself had an absolute blast playing this game!

The animal racing style and themes are an awesome spin on the the classic arcade racer, with each animal (A total of 8) having a set of 3 unique and interesting abilities of their own. These abilities each of the animals possess, alongside the diverse range of maps that contain tricky obstacles such as the big boulders thrown from giants and hefty spike traps, really helped make our races more interesting and broke that monotony you’d have in most other games in this genre. My niece was smitten with the ‘chubby walrus,’ and wouldn’t change from him all afternoon.

Lovely Planet

Lovely Planet

So nearing the amount of in game time that equates to 10 actual rotations of the Earth (228.6 hours at the time of this review), I feel as though I have a proper understanding of this game, and my input will be valued.

Short version: This game is superb. You’d have to be an absolute fool to neglect this purchase.

Long version: My roommate suggested me this game after learning that I was looking for games to speedrun. I purchased it, fired it up, and not a moment later, fell in love with it. That kind of love you feel that just warms your whole body. My initial reaction was, “Wow, this soundtrack is incredible! And these graphics! It’s so simple, yet so capturing and quirky!”

The world is kind of a heavy place lately, and it’s become hard to escape and find that moment of peace we all could really use. Everywhere we look for entertainment or relaxation reminds us of the discord and disorder seen more and more through images of violence and confrontation. Where do you turn when you want to get away from the realities of the world we’re being reminded of every day?

Of course everyone enjoys the challenge and hyperactive action of first person shooters but as some of us grow older we tire of their melodramatic, heavy handed, and needlessly intense nature. Could it be possible to have that same action in a more refined, artistic, and abstract style? Lovely Planet is exactly the kind of shooter to bring us this sort of peace so needed in an entertainment industry fueled by glorified aggression.

If speedrunning is your thing, this is the game for you. This Micro-Platformer, similar to “Celeste” is easy to pick up, but hard to master. The controls are fair and accurate (However, you will find yourself getting enraged when you make a mistake). Each world can take up to 25 min, depending on speed, and you’ll find yourself coming back to it to improve your time. The simplicity of each level may lead many to think the game is straightforward, but each level is has a unique challenge that you need to overcome.

Disclaimer: I had beta access to the game

Pros:

-Lots of variety between the different worlds.

-The format of the levels (all in one screen) is easy to learn, but hard to master. At no point will the game feel overwhelming though.

-The length and design of the levels makes it perfect for speed-running, and newcomers to speed-running.

-An already active speed running community.

-Great music that will stay interesting even when you die 100 times.

Maybe pro maybe con, depends on your preferences:

Fat Man Fights

Overview - All Coming Soon

Fat Man Fights is an action-arcade game with a humorous and light-hearted tone that is centred around an innovative and entertaining pushing mechanic.

Compete in fast-paced, hilarious sumo wrestling games against quick-witted AI opponents for the chance to win more tasty and delicious food (like donuts! And cake! And pizza!)!

First one out of the ring loses!

Progress up the ranks of sumo wrestlers to become the ultimate sumo wrestler of the century!

In Fat Man Fights you will start off in your humble home where you are then able to select your sumo wrestling games from your TV.

In the sumo wrestling match, the core mechanic is pushing.

This is where you hold the mouse button to charge up a push:

Then when you release it, the player will push and the power of that push will correspond with how long the mouse button has been held down for.

This allows for a constant change in playstyles from offensive and defensive which keeps the gameplay always interesting and engaging.

Jumping is also a huge part of the game!

What Fat Man Fights does offer:

  • Fast-paced, fun and exciting sumo wrestling matches

  • A break from the darker and deeper games on Steam

  • An fun and unique push mechanic which is the core mechanic

  • A light-hearted and enjoyable experience

  • High replayability - easy to learn but hard to master

  • A bright and colourful art style

  • Belly flopping. Lots of it.

  • A competitive drive - leaderboards and stats

  • A well-balanced game that suits all types of players with different skill levels

  • Comedic vanity items for the player

  • A variety of maps that suit different playstyles

What Fat Man Fights doesn’t offer:

  • Multiplayer

  • Deep and meaningful gameplay

  • Incredibly well-drawn art

Hey so you’ve scrolled down this far, I’ll tell you a bit about me.

Hi I’m Anika, I made Fat Man Fights, I’m 15 years old and I live in England :)

If you have any questions or constructive criticism (which I would love to hear) please do so in the discussions of the community hub, I will always check it!

Good game. The goal to unlock achievement is hard yet not impossible, keeps me playing. good job.

Focus, timing, and cats

A small score-chaser, Karate Cat is all about timing.

Karateka(t) stands above a stand with wooden plank (or sometimes brick) and has to smash the plank by hitting it at the correct time (as shown by a bar moving up and down, showing a target) or, in case of a brick, sweep it aside. Hitting the brick or hitting the plank at the wrong time makes the cat cry (you monster!).

Hitting the bar at the right time multiple times in a row as it’s going up earns combo and associated bonus points.

Lovely Planet 2: April Skies

Lovely Planet 2: April Skies

Pretty good follow up to Lovely Planet 1. There were a few problems at launch but the dev has got those issues fixed now.

It is easier but its still just as fun. My only complaint is that there isn’t as much baddie variety. Homing baddies, random bullets, and blue baddies have been replaced with a love angel that quickly homes onto you and tries to smooch you. While the new baddie is a great replacement for random bullets, it still feels a bit lacking without homing baddies. I think they may have been removed because is harder to parry because hit boxes are very tight, even without considering how massive they were in Lovely Planet 1.

Real player with 69.7 hrs in game

**TL;DR Very good Speedrun FPS game. Easier/smoother skill curve. Faster paced than the original but overall has easier level design. Music and sound effects are great.

Competing on the leaderboards require running diagonally for a speed boost which can be awkward but adds another layer of skill.

Length depends on how much you want to replay levels for better times. Without that, expect anywhere from 2-8 hours.

Highly recommended.**

Video coming soon hopefully. Not to bring attention to myself. Playing LP2 made me want to make a few videos. That hasn’t happened in years, so I’m running with it.
