Bridge!

This product is by Aerosoft who I have come across before being producers of payware for Microsoft Flight Simulator. All I can say about this constantly crashing game is that it lived up to my expectations and it’s performance limitations killed it stone dead - five crashes to desktop in the space of one hour. From what I understand the sequel to this game is also worth saving your money over for similar reasons. Avoid Avoid Avoid …

Read the manual.

First, the default language is German, you need to change that in launch options before you start the game.

The game starts fairly intuitive, but not so much as you get further into the “missions”. I’ve already lost over an hour and even though it’s been frustrating at times, it’s well worth the price, at least when it is on sale.

Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs

Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs

In my opinion, this is one of the best VR games I have ever played. It takes the classic formula of throwing birds at pigs, scales it up into a 3D environment and nails everything it has to.

I have played practically all of the Angry Birds games from when they initially came out, nearly an entire decade ago, and so when I saw this, I immediately had to give it a go. I was sceptical, since the original games were 2D and adding an additional dimension would, naturally, cause problems. However, this is actually one of the best parts of the game. The level design accommodates the additional 3D element by allowing most levels to have the option of taking your shots at different, predetermined locations/angles. I find this feature really well done because it continues the element of puzzles in the mobile games where it is about finding the right wood plank to destroy and analysing the structures from different viewpoints, looking for the weak-points is both engaging and satisfying when you get it right.

My Experience

OK, Bundle Kitt is fantastic. The speed at which the character moves and the abruptness of the mews are just perfect. There are many games that try to be funny, often through scripted jokes and cutscenes. The brilliant thing about Bundle Kitt is that it actually involves the player in the comedic timing. The scenes often don’t end until you meow, but once you do, they end immediately, like a jump cut. Bundle Kitt is one of the funniest games I’ve ever played. For the price of free, you should check it out.

A challenging and rewarding VR puzzler, this is a beautiful game that runs on the Vive as well as the Pimax 5k+ with no issues. It allows smooth (controller-based) locomotion as well as teleport.

I’d compare it with the Talos Principle and Portal (but without the narrative) in that each puzzle exists as a separate room that you must move around in to complete a physical task. Each room is a large 3 dimensional space where you play with switches to change the direction of gravity, move platforms, etc. The main challenge is the time switching and interacting with past versions of yourself. There are 4 main sections with a different theme and each has around 10 puzzles. As a whole, everything feels connected and not a just a jumble of random puzzles. The puzzles are quite varied in complexity and often can be solved in more than one way. Some are pretty straight forwards while others took me multiple attempts and sometimes required you to think outside the box. It never felt repetitive and it took me 27 hours to beat the game.

I just finished playing through the whole game. As someone who prefers VR platforming and puzzle games rather than shooters, I enjoyed the experience for the most part, and would say this as a pretty good game with some flaws. I would have happily paid for it, and recommend it to anyone who enjoys room scale VR and problem solving.

The good

The game is designed around a time manipulation and replay premise, like you might have seen in Braid or The Talos Principle. Each level contains one or more starting locations and one or more slots in which you want to insert cubes. You pick a starting point, step out of it, do stuff, and then choose to either keep or discard your run. Kept runs all play in parallel, so you can do such things as throw cubes to your future self, or steal them from your past self, as well as manipulate platforms for your other selves. Later, different simultaneous gravity orientations are introduced depending on the starting location. These puzzle elements work well together and the levels are creative and interesting.

ZUSI 3 - Aerosoft Edition

ZUSI 3 - Aerosoft Edition

This is IMO the de facto state of the art train simulator as far as realism goes. What makes this one an absolute sell even at the comparatively hefty price is that there is no paying for routes or rolling material, every future content is part of the current price. Furthermore the inclusion of the EBuLa and ZuSi Display (which allows one to open instrument panels, MTD, MFA/MFD, EBuLa and backpanels in new windows that can be resized and/or put on other displays) gives it a huge advantage over the simulators by Dovetail Games. It even supports GNT and ETCS and has routes making use of this.

I thought I would write a few thoughts, as it has been sometime since anyone posted for Zusi 3.

Is Zusi 3 worth the money (currently £54.50 Aerosoft Edition on Steam).

Well, it perhaps depends upon your point of view of what you want from a simulator. If you want fancy graphics and easy game play then perhaps Zusi 3 is not for you. If you want adequate graphics (I will return to that subject later) and intense study level game play then perhaps Zusi 3 may be for you.

I have played 236 hours and still only scratched the surface. I am sure there are people who have played hundreds of more hours. It can still catch me out and proves very challenging.

Katamari Damacy REROLL

Katamari Damacy REROLL

This is a public service announcement.

You may have noticed a highly voted negative review claiming that the game is unplayable without a controller due to a lack of key mappings.

This is not the case. The game does work with a keyboard - I have completed the entire game playing this way.

The problem is not with the key bindings but with how they are explained. I made the same mistake as the other poster when I first started playing but once you know how to use the keyboard it’s actually quite intuitive.

I’ma split this into two reviews. One for people who played Katamari Damacy on PS2, the other for people who have never played it.

PS2 players: Hello. I too am old. This is in almost every respect the Katamari you remember. Except the visuals come in higher resolution (no pixels!) and everything loads quicker. There have been complaints that the game only runs in windowed mode until you’ve cleared the tutorial. Yup. True. After that you get access to the settings from Home Planet in the same way you accessed them on your PS2. This bothered me not at all. If you think it might bother you, you’ll want to take that into consideration. There have also been complaints that the game didn’t recognize controller input during the tutorial. No idea. Mine worked just fine with no configuration. Also, the story scenes involving the Hoshino family are presented in Japanese with subtitles, rather than the NSTC PS2 release’s divertingly weird English dub.

OMSI 2: Steam Edition

OMSI 2: Steam Edition

This is still the best bus simulator. It is a good improvement on OMSI 1.

MAPS/VEHICLES: The Spandau map is much extended with a new chronology function where you can see the routes/fares and most importantly the Berlin reunification/fall of the Berlin wall between 1986 and 1994. Two maps are included the fictional test map Grundorf (one route, the 76) and Berlin Spandau (routes 92 (137), 5 (130) and also two night routes. Two new buses come with this game the articulated (bendy) bus MAN NG272 (GN92) and the MAN NL202 (EN92). The two double deckers from OMSI 1 are improved and the MAN SD202 has two new variants; the D90 and the D91. There are new AI cars including ambulances with working sirens. There is also much more trains in OMSI 2.

OMSI is a deeply odd and divisive creation, it is at once both an abysmally dire example of horrendous software design, while also one of the profoundest delights available to those with a passion for buses.

Learning the many arcane processes for getting this simulation to work is no small feat. Don’t bother trying to suck-it-and-see - there is no realistic chance of you fully getting to grips with OMSI inside the 2-hour limit for refunds - it requires an enormous commitment of time and energy to achieve a working understanding of OMSI. (In that respect, I suspect it’s not unlike actually learning to drive a real bus).

Puzzle Puppers

Puzzle Puppers

Well, let me tell you I really loved this cute indie game!

And by the way, once in a while even the Steam store accepts the right tags - this game is rightly flagged as indie, puzzle and casual but no way “for kids only” or something like that.

In fact, it’s a very nice and somehow challenging puzzle game that can be definitely enjoyed by the whole family, of course if the player likes indie puzzle games. Or cute puppies. For its price, it’s definitely worth it in my opinion.

The game is made in Unity and unfortunately it really lacks of display configuration modes (you can basically play only on “high” graphic quality and a single resolution if you want to go windowed), but it’s ok since it’s quite light to be downloaded and played.

Real player with 40.8 hrs in game

It ended up having more variants in the puzzles than I thought, which is great. It really is a fun, colourful, well thought out puzzle game. Some levels I had to think and move pups a lot to get the solution, others are very easy. There is no tutorial or words but the levels are clear enough for you to work out what to do.

Achievement hunters - all achievements are to get 3 hearts on each level. Just pick up every ham bone in level to get 3 hearts, then get your pup to eat out of his colour co-ordinated bowl to finish level. There are no timers (thankfully) and one dog can get all bones, not every dog has to get a bone.
