Pathologic Classic HD
Hands down, the best game I have ever played!
Pathologic is a very ambitious, very unique, genre-bending, medium-defining video game which does things no other game has done before or since. It is also devilishly vague, extremely difficult, incredibly slow and takes place entirely within one small greyish town over a period of about 30 hours. But as you go on you realise its incredibly slow pacing, its single greyish location, its trudging from one place to another are all essential to creating such an incredible atmosphere and game.

This game already has thousands of reviews for it, and nobody is likely to read this one, so I’m not sure why I’m bothering to write it. Then again, I’m not sure why I bought this game to begin with, or played it, or dedicated myself to completing all three scenarios and collecting every achievement over 70 grueling hours. In for a penny, in for a pound, I guess.
Actually, I lied a bit there. I know why I bought this game, if nothing else. Like many here, I heard about Pathologic when its remake/sequel came out, and several popular YouTube channels featured intriguing summations of the game and declared it a lost gem. Despite their praise, though, the videos were almost pitched as dares, warning potential players about the game’s infinite rough edges, grinding difficulty, and uniquely eccentric approach to the relationship between the player and the game. Depending on how deep you go down the Pathologic rabbit hole, the fourth wall will be anything from ‘leaned on’ to ‘completely bulldozed.’

Locoland
I first played Locoland back when it was called Steamland, on a loose CD in a stack from an estranged family member almost 15 years ago. I spent hours attempting to play it on my already aging Windows 98 computer set up in my bedroom, and boy did I suck at it. Fast forward to about two months ago and I find it on Steam and, despite never being any good at it, I bought it.
Playing it now, I realise that the game isn’t necessarily any easier - I’m just more patient. It’s still tricky, and isn’t exactly monumental as far as strategy games go, but I still enjoy playing it. As frustrating as it can be fighting against the enemy trains, mounting attacks on their factories and repair depots and fending off zeppelins, I think it makes the victories even sweeter because you really need to fight for it.

Locoland:
A happy and peaceful civilization of hard working robots with an extensive railroad network, enjoying robotic life as best they can. Cherishing the ancient “Golden Gear” relic as their ancestors have, unfortunately the evil Khon-Kaa-Doo has other things in mind. On a beautiful night, he sent his troops to steal the relic. From now on, your mission is to get it back!
An interesting strategy game involving trains as your main units. Building wagons containing canons, artillery, missiles and more to destroy the enemy’s forces. Make sure to build plenty of engines to pull or push your trains into the enemy territory. No good building an arsenal and being as slow as a snail!! This game is all about the manoeuvrability of your trains and how efficiently to attack the opposing forces.

## Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
When someone mention this game, SOMEONE will install it. That lucky person is none other than me. How about the game you ask; and the answer is simple. It's really, really bad. This game is made on source engine, which is undoubtedly one of the best and maybe the best engine at 2000's. Half-Life 2 made on this engine. And Portal. And Team Fortress 2\. You get the idea, if you are going to make a game with a gun - this engine is the golden choice.
But somehow and somewhat, Troika games blew it. The one and only purpose of this engine, which is developing first-person shooter game, and they really blew it all over. Just pick a gun and shoot something. It's notoriously bad. When you minimize the game, the alpha layers of textures will be gone and all you left with black squares. It doesn't have widescreen support. It doesn't support higher resolutions. This game aged so bad that it stinks like a rotten cheese.

## Yume Nikki
### Before you read any other review, read these two things:
[olist]
* This is a game that's best played blind, or not at all, as it's very experience sensitive. In fact, some of the reviews you read here are already telling you too much about the game. Read this one instead.* Probably the worst game tutorial ever. It doesn't tell you anything a 6 year old couldn't figure out by mashing keys until something happens, setting you up to die of boredom and frustration later on. Keep reading and I'll explain.

It's hard to explain why you should play Yume Nikki. On the surface it resembles the dreaded "walking simulator" of the present, yet at its core it's nothing like them. Despite the fact that all you do in the game is slowly wander through alternately desolate and labyrinthine worlds, it's ended up leaving one of the most lasting impressions on me that any game ever has.
Saying Yume Nikki is a bit of an acquired taste is something of an understatement. Working your way through the deepest recesses of the protagonist Madotsuki's mind is an obtuse task, and you're given no direction or encouragement of any form beyond a vague mission statement of collecting the game's 24 "effects". Not that you know what those are supposed to be.

## Hard Truck Apocalypse / Ex Machina
There are a lot of games on Steam, but once in a while, you browse the catalogue and discover a little gem hiding somewhere in the deep ends of the underated section. **Ex Machina** is one of those games, but let me start off by saying that this game certainly isn't for everyone, it's genre is considered to be a very acquired taste, but I would say it's worth the buy anyway just for the sake of trying it. I didn't expect it to be anything amazing given it's lack of popularity, but I was wrong, this game is truly brilliant.

The Crossout single-player predecessor, Hard Truck Apocalypse (original name Ex Machina fits it even better) was somewhat quite intense when it first hit the shelves. The gameplay (similar to the golden classic of the Russian game development, the Vangers) was quite addictive, with all that driving in the wastes of the post-apocalyptic open world, shooting bandits, upgrading your car, delivering some post quests and convoying caravans… Driving, driving and then some more driving and fighting with your car. There was also an intriguing sci-fi story plot, with some twists and various ways to go through the game (two starting quest lines, non-linear solutions in every big chained mission in every game area, and two endings, with two different boss fights and outcomes).

![The Stalin Subway](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/311140/header.jpg "")
## The Stalin Subway
The setting of this Russian-produced FPS turns out to be a specifical kind of joke, when the serious part of content is sticked to the comical one, so you cannot say when it's switching to one part or another.
From one side, Orion Games thouroughly chose the weapon set, buildings' textures, the exact way of main protagonist, Gleb Suvorov - there are rumors that Metro 2 tunnels, for example, indeed have an entrance somewhere near the MSU, the nearest station to the LIPAN is indeed "Sokol", in 1952 there was no "Tverskaya" station between "Ploshad Slerdlova [Teatralnaya]" and "Mayakovskaya"… The large weapon set is very accurate to the models which were in 1952, some inaccuracy comes from the work of a few weapons (PPSh-41 was an open-bolt weapon, not closed-bolt, e.g.), and the fact that istead of PPSH-41 and SVT-40 there would be a higher chance to have PPS-43 and Mosin 1944 carbine.

The Stalin Subway, also known as "Metro-2", which should not be confused with the famous AAA-serial "Metro".
It is a very old (released in 2006) Russian FPS game, based on a fictional story of some hilarious coup d'etat plot of Beria (state security minister) with the aim to kill Stalin himself, by blowing the Vozhd away completely with an atomic bomb blast. One young KGB officer is raising himself against this plot, which results in thousands of killed soviet people. So, if you are eager to kill Ruskies no matter what's the cause… you might even like it. The gameplay is typical for the late '90s-early '00s cheap FPS games... Especially if you're familiar with Cenega or City Interactive products of the same age.

## An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge
Free for everyone at the time of review.
Hardware: Win 10x64, 3570k mildly OC, GTX 1070, 16 GB, SSD.
Super laggy on my system; took me a full 30 minutes to complete a game advertised as 5-10 minutes. I see the system specs state "Windows 7"; I'm guessing this is either a Win 10 issue (some games lag badly in 8 / 10 that run fine in 7) or possibly the 10xx series video card.
I recommend taking a very brief glance at the videos before playing to see how fast the game is supposed to move. If the game is going to lag for you, it will start at the opening credits, which take so long to change screens (tapping an arrow key helps) that it feels like the game is locked up. Don't press ESC; that instantly closes the game.

## Little Big Adventure
An absolute classic adventure/platformer game, not the sort that you see get made anymore.
I really loved it many years ago and still a great game to this day.
Originally it was released on steam with just the newest version but after lots of feedback the classic version was added.
Both versions are good but play out differently, The enhanced edition is a little more simplified but also easier to control (moving around and attacking).
It's worth checking both out and playing through them.
It's a little unfortunate that you can't unlock achievements on the original (Dos) version, so if you want them you have to play the enhanced edition.

**Edit:** Thank you for listening to us DotEmu! This review has been revised due to post-release changes to alleviate some of my and others concerns.
It's fantastic to finally see the original Little Big Adventure on Steam! The "Enhanced Edition" now available on Steam contains a port of the mobile version along with the original emulated in DosBox. I really recommend getting this version not due to the mobile port, but rather due to the original bundled herein.
If you have never heard of this games series before and do not intend on playing the mobile port there isn't much more to say; stop reading now and get this gem! You won't regret it.

![Umineko When They Cry - Question Arcs](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/406550/header.jpg "")
## Umineko When They Cry - Question Arcs
Ryukishi07, you sadistic bastard, I love you.
Before getting this one, I would recommend you to at least try to read the Higurashi When They Cry series. They're amazing visual novels that have some connection to Umineko's plot. Don't worry, they're not required, but they're also great stories that, if you finish them, you'll have a whole different view on some of Umineko's important characters.
Umineko is a story about sin, punishment, guilt, trauma and especially love. Written by Ryukishi07, who had experience as a social worker, it's a mystery in it's core, but not entirely. The content ranges from bittersweet love stories to chuuni fantastic logic and reasoning battles, where arguments take form as weapons. How can you have so many different kinds of dilemmas in one story? Well, just look at the hour counts which people who read this series have on Steam. It's easily an 100+ experience.
*– [Real player with 112.4 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198031230073)*
This is a review of the whole of Umineko, not just the Question Arcs. Just so you know.
Mystery stories are, at their core, just one big puzzle. An author writes a story, gives you hints, and typically tells you all you need to know before the story's conclusion so that you have a fair chance at figuring it out if you're perceptive enough. Good mystery authors make it possible to figure out the killer long before they are revealed in the story. But it has gotten to the point that many people either don't try and figure it out, or if they do, their guesses are far more lukewarm, because they know the story will succinctly reveal everything at the end of the story and wrap everything up in a nice little bow. Umineko, on the other hand, does not do this. Umineko lays out clues for you and tells you to figure it out yourself, not directly revealing the answer to a majority of its individual mysteries, and, while giving you more hints to its biggest mysteries, never outright stating the answer. What makes the story even more difficult to solve is the constant questioning of whether what you're seeing is true or false, and whether or not the murders are truly being done by magic, not helped by the constant seemingly impossible closed room murders. Can you figure out the truth? That's up to your observational skills.

![D: The Game](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/510590/header.jpg "")
## D: The Game
As a fan of the late Kenji Eno (R.I.P) and the now defunct WARP Studios games, I was really happy to see that D (WARP's first game to be released outside of Japan) is now easily accessible on Steam.
D was originally made for the short lived 3DO in 1995 and was ported to the Sega Staurn, PS1, and MS DOS (which is this version). The gameplay is akin to 1993's Myst, with the entire game being an fmv. Yet, unlike Myst, everything is fully animated. So if you want to get somewhere, you are going to have to walk there using a pre-set path. It's kinda slow, but it really helps build the atmosphere.
*– [Real player with 4.8 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198031567900)*
I own this game on Playstation, 3DO, Saturn and now on Steam, and I don't regret paying for it again, even though it hasn't aged well, and even though this is a fairly mediocre DOSBox port.
D is an on-rails horror-suspense game from the 90s. You play as Laura Harris, daughter of Dr. Richter Harris, a famous physician who, for some reason, has suddenly decided to murder everyone in his hospital and disappear inside the building. You have two hours (in real time) to figure out why, with no saving, interactive movie-style.
