Monsters' Den: Book of Dread

Monsters' Den: Book of Dread

I absolutely love this game. Back in highschool when this was a web browser game, I would sign up for computer classes just to play this game secretly in a corner.

What I love most about the remastered version of the game is that not a single thing changed. There is so much loot to be had, so many boss fights, and bad ass legendary monsters to hunt. To my knowledge, the game has no end. You can beat the campaign, but it lets you keep playing anyway for the sake of things.

It’s simple enough to play casually, but challenging enough to make you think. The most fun part is its Diablo 2 skill tree mechanics that you try some really unique parties.

This game simple mechanics are solid, with no apparent bugs or fails. It works and is fairly entertaining at first. UNFORTUNATELY, it has no story worth telling about. It has this weakest of story lines that repeats itself over and over again at each level, which becomes old very, very fast. You are going down in the dungeon at each level defeating the same opponent types at each turn. You collect gear, and become stronger because of it, but the monsters also get stronger in proportion to your dungeon level, which means, well, you get the same dynamics in combat also.

Two Die

Two Die

This is such an awesome addicting and rewarding strategy game! It has good old school 8 bit graphics, similar to fire emblem with a dungeons and dragons feel at its core giving a more personal character experience.

My favorite aspect of the game is once you clear a level you can either pick from three items that either give a stat bonus, new attacks, or fully heal. This gives you the ability to make very diverse character builds, while also adding an edge of difficulty since you cannot heal if you decide to improve your characters build after each level.

Fun game!

Plays a little like roguelikes with its simultaneous turns but has nice, handcrafted levels.

Positioning in combat is important as you usually have to use choke points or corners to avoid enemies overwhelming you.

You have rudimentary ways to build your character.

There are 3 different attributes (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence) and 8 different spells

(4 combat and 4 magic ones).

Also weapons scale with certain attributes.

Sadly there is no explanation how the system works in-game but the developer explains it in the community hub.

First impressions : Great game! Well done game - love that it makes you think! This is turn based - can upgrade your gear (the levels have same lovable vendors but with different goods). Currently, I’m in the catacombs and got ambushed by some skeletons. Fun and quite challenging!! Looking forward to playing this game more and will update the review as I do!

Hyper Dungeon Crawler

Hyper Dungeon Crawler

This is the groundwork for a really nice little game, and I did quite enjoy it for what it was, which is why I give this a positive review, but it is rather rough around the edges. Some things that would need to be ironed out before I can really recommend it:

  • The inventory limitations are quite frustrating without adding much depth to the game itself, and with a full inventory you can’t even dig through walls properly which makes this extra infuriating. The many different foodstuffs especially seem to be just designed to clog up your inventory.

Fun little game. Fairly challenging. My only gripe is that some stuff isn’t explained. I see things that I feel like I should be able to interact with but I can’t.

Dungeon Rats

Dungeon Rats

Dungeon Rats is a pure combat game set in the universe of Age of Decadence. Like it’s predecessor, it promises to force players to make hard decisions and weigh every tradeoff.

The first thing you’ll notice when playing the game is the excellent, atmospheric music, almost perfectly complementing the game’s main menu screen. Most of the in game scenes, however, err towards too dark for easy visibility, even somewhat hindering playability.

While shallow in comparison, the conversation trees are highly reminiscent of Age of Decadence’s conversations; detailed, lore-heavy, full of unsaid implications, which were one of the best qualities of AoD. Unfortunately, as Dungeon Rats is extremely linear, it could not embrace the full scope of these conversations.

Important Note: I played through Age of Decadence several times before playing this game, so my experice may vary to yours. I only played this game on “Hard” (default difficulty) and “Solo Mode Hard”.

Overview:

The game consists of approximately 50 battles, which are set-pieces. There are no random encounters. This makes it a game about learning what the encounters are about. Playing the game for the first time was challenging and I did not learn my lessons that defense is more important than offense. I also learnt later that it is ok for some of the early companions to die (although you don’t want it to happen often).

Dungeon Scavenger

Dungeon Scavenger

RECOMMENDED : Ratings 8/10 (Very Enjoyable, Great price to enjoyment ratio).

Dungeon Scavenger was a really fun and enjoyable Rogue-like dungeon crawler that I enjoy very much.

This game provides an interesting twists the the regular rogue-like dungeon crawler, using many different game mechanics. There is also great replayability because the user can chose to play one of 8 interesting classes, which are extremely different in all aspect. There are also 4 different difficulty mode and the “Impossible” difficulty is as the name suggest : it’s impossible to play it directly. The challenge is to support your character in the impossible mode with money and other resources from your other character. I spend many hours farming “skill point potions” using my other characters and then sending them over to the character in impossible mode.

Real player with 99.2 hrs in game

TL;DR: Simple and relaxing dungeon crawler that can see you putting in dozens of hours on a single class run, let alone twelve of them.

Dungeon Scavenger is one of those gems of a game that fully embodies the old adage of ‘less is more’. Although the forward face of the game makes it seem like an outdated slog, in practice it proves to be a highly enjoyable experience.

Gameplay consists of moving a highlighted square across a randomized grid layout with encounters that differ every time you rest and/or reset the dungeon through events; whereas combat is simply pressing buttons with the goal of maximizing damage output and minimizing damage taken through the use of class-specific spells and enhancements to increase your strength or hinder that of your enemy.

Lost Dimension

Lost Dimension

Lost Dimension is another PS Vita game that got unnoticed (also released for PS3 too), and ported onto Steam. Needless to say, I’ve heard about the game since last year thanks to it’s catchy final boss theme, but because it was on the Vita, I could never get itplay . But since it’s on Steam I finally have the chance to play it.

Pros:

  • Interesting mysteries in the story, and a great reveal for them

  • The areas are really cool to look at, same with the models of allies and enemies

  • The portraits have hair physics and look sweet

Real player with 38.5 hrs in game

Lost Dimension is one of those games that’s between a thumbs-up and thumbs-down for me. Lost Dimension definitely has some good aspects, and some bad aspects. Since I enjoyed the game enough to do two playthroughs and get all the achievements, I’ll lean towards a recommendation.

Lost Dimension has a decent premise, but rather weak execution. Eleven heroic teenagers are sent to save the world and ascend a tower. Unfortunately, among the team are traitors that will betray the team, but will need to assist the team as they too have reasons to ascend the tower. These traitors are randomly generated per playthrough yet easy enough to discover, but comes off to me as a very interesting idea regardless. Whomever you’ve deemed to remove from your team leaves behind their abilities you’ve unlocked, and can give your team varied builds.

Stolen Realm

Stolen Realm

This game is still in early access. There are lots of bugs and quirks, but the game is being regularly updated with bug fixes and new mechanics.

Do you like Dungeons and Dragons? Do you like turn based strategy games? Do you like to kill stuff? If you said yes to any of these questions, then this game may be for you.

Make a character. Go on quests to kill stuff. Level up and obtain sweet loot. These are the basics of this game.

With 8 skill trees to choose from, each with their own unique abilities, you can make your character just the way you want them to be. The best part? You can mix and match skills from any tree you want, whenever you want (so long as you have the skill points to do so). Wanna be a sneaky rogue who does lots of crits? You got it. Wanna be a fire wizard who sometimes casts ice spells? You can do that too. Do you want to make 20 attacks in one turn, each one applying a debuff that causes your target to take increased damage from all subsequent attacks? Its gonna take some effort (and a lot of luck), but it is completely possible, thanks to the skill tree!

Real player with 42.2 hrs in game

It’s a diablo3/PoE style aarpg with divinity/baldurs gate/wasteland turn based party combat, and it does both fantastically well. I find myself respeccing characters constantly because the skill tree is so much fun to experiment with. You select the difficulty scaling whenever you want which can scale as high as you want or as low as you want, with the rewards reflecting accordingly. Will be looking closely at future content and patches for this game.
