Geneforge 1 - Mutagen

Geneforge 1 - Mutagen

To say I’ve been waiting a long time for this one is an understatement. And I haven’t even been waiting as long as some other people; from what I remember seeing on the forums, I’m pretty sure this remake has been teased to some extent since the original release of Geneforge 5. But it’s here now, and even if it isn’t everything it could have been, it’s a very worthy remake that, for all but the most nostalgic players, pretty much entirely replaces the original.

For anyone who isn’t familiar with Geneforge, I’d best describe it as if Shin Megami Tensei was a CRPG in a traditional fantasy setting. You build up your character with skill points gained by leveling up and expand your party by creating monsters with different abilities. As you explore the world and uncover more of the plot, you will eventually have to make a decision on which faction you want to support, which ones you want to oppose, and decide the fate of the world. There’s never a right answer and rarely a wrong one, these games don’t just settle for a “good or evil” alignment system; who you side with is entirely down to your own roleplaying or moral principles.

It’s difficult to put in words just how good this is. I’ve been a long time fan of Vogel’s games, since purchasing Avernum 6 soon after getting a Steam account. I’ve played all the series: Avernum, Geneforge, Avadon, and the newer Queen’s Wish. All of the series have some things in common (you can side with different factions, around four different character builds to choose from, and a lot of recycled graphics and sounds) but the Geneforge series overall is the one I’ve made the least progress with. I’ve touched at least the 3rd, 4th, and 5th games of the series and manage to get “stuck” about half way through. I didn’t have this issue with the Avernum and Avadon series. I was hoping a remake of a game in the series would address the difficulty spike apparent in the older titles, and it seems to have at this point. I’ve sunk some decent time in to this (on normal difficulty) and have had to rethink some spots but haven’t come across any game breaking difficulty. Of course, you can make the game as hard as you want with the difficulty controls. So far, the updated graphics and sounds along with a friendlier UI make this Vogel’s best effort to date. It’s a relief, too, as I thought The Queen’s Wish was a step back in quality (some really questionable decisions regarding how clearing dungeons are concerned, awkward art assets that don’t all fit together). My only MINOR gripe with the game is how the inventory works. You have your main pack then a junk bag. If you put something in the junk bag, you can’t take it out until you get to town. What?? Not sure the rationale behind it, but it’s not a deal breaker. Overall, I’d put this on par, if not better, than the remake of Avernum: Ruined World. I’m looking forward to any other remasters that come, but my true hope is that Jeff will take this inspiration to make another classic in the vein of Avernum 6. Excellent job to Jeff on this perfect remake!

I was a tester for this game, and let me tell you I would pay every penny and more to play this game. It is totally worth the purchase and it is a favorite pastime for me with my friends!

This game is so much fun to play with friends. It plays like a real board game - the random events, the challenge of racing your opponents around the board, and the joy of wickedly sabotaging your opponents via spells cast from the wizard tower leads to a lot of chaos and fun. It’s really nostalgic. I think anyone who has played Dark Tower or other vintage fantasy board games would definitely get a kick out of playing this, especially in multiplayer.

Wasteland 3

Wasteland 3

This is a fun, mildly complicated party-based, turn-based game full of various strategies & tactics, with a large focus on combat tactics. You can play on hard-core mode & min-max everything, or just play casual & have fun with various builds.

The setting is post-apocalyptic, & you gradually fill out your squad of “Rangers” on your team. You mainly choose their weapons & skills, ranging from beefy (or speedy) melee specialists to glass cannon snipers who deal death from afar. Or go in between with pistols, automatic weapons, & machine guns. Skills, aside from the weapons mentioned, include dialogue specializations, explosives, science stuff, stealth (not very fleshed out, but useful for sneaking up on enemies), dealing with robots, taming various animals, etc. Pretty much every skill is useful.

I’d highly recommend it. It most definitely feels like a combination of X-Com style combat and Fallout post apocalypse atmosphere. I very much enjoyed the story, voice acting, music and plethora of choices. I liked both DLCs because they both added time to the game, blended well with the main story AND added a new mechanic in each case. I did three full sessions with a good-ish and bad-ish run on Ranger and a November Reigns min-max playthru on SuperJerk. Once you get a feel for the game, it becomes much easier. I learned new things in each playthru too about both game mechanics and story choices. I was pretty impressed with one in particular where I found out about a special type of armor you can get. In my last playthru, I tried to get it but because I pissed off the wrong group of people earlier (which I never thought would matter), they STOLE it from me later. I was both bummed I didn’t get it and happy it was a “thing”.

侠客风云传前传(Tale of Wuxia:The Pre-Sequel)

Prequel to the Tale of Wuxia, stories in this installment evolve around the 1st & 2nd disciples of the XiaoYao Sect, depicting what events have transpired leading up to the conflicts in Tale of Wuxia. Now let’s talk a bit about the Unity Engine this game is based on: It’s free, versatile, vast cross-platform support, saves a great deal of money in development. IMO they’ve created a very good base model with this game that has a lot of potentials and I wish they’d keep exploring it, polish it & expand it to create more Wuxia games.

I hate this game as much as i love it sometimes this is the best game I’ve found where it feels you have progress every battle and should try and do every sidequest because it makes your party stronger in some way it doesn’t live up to it’s full potential in many ways which saddens me as I am in love with its concepts and execution.

The battles in this game are excellent as a turn based game with lots of conditions happening in battle like counter and crits having full access to increase your power with each one. Every single boss feels unique and you have knowledge of most of the hidden conditions of the boss I’ve only found myself caught unprepared by immunities for select few bosses that don’t display them. This feels like a good “I mostly care about my main character” kind of game giving all the best things to him so he’s the strongest.

In addition to the nine characters who join the main team, hundreds of unique NPCs will also appear.Unintended discoveries of treasures can significantly strengthen a character, instead of the traditional upgrade system. The areas of the game are left free to explore from the start.

The combat system highlights the differences in resistance to the six types of magic: wind, fire, lightning, ice, light, and darkness. Different demons have different resistances to these six types of magic. The resistance of different demons to spells in the game cannot be directly observed. The various maps in the game are not marked with difficulty levels, while this could be done, the development team felt that it would ruin the authenticity of the game. After all, life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what the next piece will taste like. Furthermore, the weapons that characters from different professions can equip are different, and the vast majority of them have additional effects.

What are you waiting for? Come on a journey through this wonderfully magical fantasy world!

AntharioN

AntharioN

Antharion is an open world RPG by indie developer, Orphic Software. It took me about 44 hours to beat the game. I explored just about as much as I could. I may have missed a few islands that aren’t on the in-game map.

It starts by requiring you to create a party of four which you will use throughout the game. There are 8 classes to choose from plus the custom class option. You can also select gender and race. Each race has different levels of attributes. Male characters have more strength. Female characters have more wisdom.

Real player with 44.4 hrs in game

AntharioN scratches an itch I’ve had for a looong time: the need for a turn-based, combat-focused dungeon crawler. Roguelikes aside, this is a genre that’s been underservered (not at all served?) since the 90s. With the severe emphasis on graphics and (ugh) real-time gameplay, the party dungeon crawler has basically died off.

On to AntharioN!

Pros

It looks nice-tiles are easy to read, it’s obvious what is an obstacle and what isn’t, humanoid units all have personalized looks and NPC faces have a ton of personality.
