The Legend of Candlewind: Nights & Candles

The Legend of Candlewind: Nights & Candles

This is quite a difficult one to review - it has the core of a reasonable throwback turnbased CRPG with no hold-handing, no prologue or tutorial to get you up to speed, and it at times captures some of the feel of playing Eye of the Beholder 1 or Bard’s Tale (not so much the (relatively) modern PC version!), but with better graphics.

There will be a few hurdles to overcome to even start to like this game, such as if you just explore the dungeon and kill what you meet you will arrive at a goblin shaman still level 1 and get wiped out. So you have to know to grind to level 2 on wandering monsters to actually progress, and this happens in a few places - there isn’t really hard fights in this game, you either win easily or get wiped out, and there is no flee function if you do get in over your head, so save often would be the advice to any but the purist.

first time i feel duped and cheated by a game’s expectation. didn’t mind the interface’s rejection of the player so much and, though it was obvious the inventory was a zero dimensional numbness, i still went through the routine ( along with its “no-choice” battle moments ). when it ended ( 2 hours (plus time to get a ‘sense’ for generating a need for my participation in the game) at most? ) i was hoping that it would, somehow, unfold into the “actual, intended” game, one much deeper and complex, a grimrock type of world, but sadly, that was it. what can i say?

End of Realms

End of Realms

It is an old school RPG where the player continually decides between two to three locations where the main character should go to. At each location certain or uncertain events take place. The narrative itself is set in stone when certain events are triggered or certain conditions are met at various locations. The game is heavy on combat and randomness.

The game works with three main stats (fortitude, defense and magic) that are purely dependent on gear and acquired passive skills. Passive and active skills can be found randomly or are unlocked when certain not foretold events are triggered. As a new player it can be a bit difficult to understand these mechanics which have not been disclosed. Usually there is some sort of logic in it. If for example you want to wear heavier armor, you need passive armor skills. It then could be worth it to try to collect armor and wear as heavy defensive armor as possible to boost such stats. If you would like to unlock more mage skills or play as a rogue, then it can perhaps be worth it to experiment more with those skills in the hope of unlocking more of those. There is significant experimentation required to unlock a lot of skills and thus enable various viable builds. It is unlikely that you’ll unlock all the skills, find all of the rarest equipment or all of the crafting recipes on a single playthrough.

A fantastic game!!!!!!

Easy to learn - harder to finish I guess.

I’m running it in a window 2560 x 1440 using Lossless Scaling - a program you can find in the Steam Shop.

maybe 5 years ago, I purchased the complete Ultima series from GOG, and played them from Ultima 4 onwards (I didn’t consider 1-3 as worthy of my time as the Avatar was introduced in 4). Why would I do such a thing? well, I had played bits and pieces of most of them, but never finished them as a teenager (except for ultima 6). It has always been on my bucket list to finish them all. Well I got through 4 to 7, before I ran out of steam, but I loved every minute. Ultima 5 was the best in my opinion.

Edit: Just Finished my first playthrough of the main storyline and it was so fun and satisfying, even the grind was fun because there were so many places and unique creatures to kill. I’ll keep it short so no spoilers but I will say if you enjoy the seeking and speaking to the NPC’s and really building the world through interacting with it you will love this game.

Saw this game and thought it would be very cool to play a game along in the realm of my first CRPG’s, UltimaIV was the first computer game i tried in my life.

Theseus: Journey to Athens

A great game which take you back to the old Ancient Greece - a super cool game for you who like deep into the story and learn something about the old Ancient Greece - amazing work…

This is a true labor of love. It’s a game based on Greek Mythology, not the Greek Mythology of Brad Pitt movies but that of the ancient storytellers. You travel through real places as the ancient Greeks imagined they had been in a time of myth and legend before history had become something concrete.

It’s definitely a niche product, but if you’re interested in the setting, you will get a kick out of it. It takes those stories that you’ve read and does a great job of bringing them to life and putting you in them.

Think_

Think_ as a game is pretty mediocre. Although the game does have a few slightly relatable emotional moments, it lacks in it in lack of gameplay, it’s price (it should be worth a dollar or two or nothing at all), the abyssmal sprite work, glitches, and just in general play value or replayability. The game can be beaten in probably half an hour and is not worth the price it has. After being beaten, the game seems to leave you in a soft lock which leaves you with no way to play the game. The game lacks charm and all and all, the only thing I enjoyed in it was the music, when it wasn’t blasting my ears out of course. 2/10, would not recommend.

I’m a sucker for short games with bad graphics, what can I say? The music is pretty good too. Only complaint is that the game doesn’t allow you to play it for a second time. I wanna see what happens if I name my character Paul :(. I don’t see an issue with the price, I just wanted to get rid of some money ngl.

Avernum 3: Ruined World

Avernum 3: Ruined World

This is one of Spiderweb Software’s most-beloved titles, with a fresh coat of paint and reforged mechanics. If you enjoyed the previous two re-remakes, Avernum: Escape from the Pit and Avernum 2: Crystal Souls, you’ll know what to expect from this game, and it certainly won’t disappoint you. And if you haven’t played the previous games yet, I would recommend you start from the beginning of the trilogy for the sake of story continuity.

There are, however, some minor flaws and oddities in the game, which I will list below in no particular order. It should be pointed out that many of these flaws are too nitpicky and technical to really concern the average player, but I just wanted to get them off my chest now that Jeff Vogel will be leaving the Avernum series behind (at least, for the time being). Also, beware that very small SPOILERS may be included.

UPDATE: Scroll down to see more detailed observations about the game below my initial review.

I spent days obsessively looking at the screenshots of this game on the Spiderweb Software website before it was released. Via some glitch, I was able to purchase it two days ago, instead of today when it was officially released. I went through with the purchase even though I could’ve easily lost the money since the ordering system might not have been working properly yet. I didn’t care. I was literally that excited. I am a 27-year-old man.

Party with gremlins. Boat through rapids. Join a cult. Side with an ambitious general or the assassin he’s hunting. The low graphical requirements of this game allow for a vast frontier setting and a deep story. Difficulty is adjustable, allowing any playstyle from story-only coasting to ruthless min-maxing. Plus, Spiderweb Software is a true indie developer. This game is easily worth $10.

An incredibly mixed bag. Its very deep stat system and occasionally interesting challenge areas and boss fights are quite good, but ultimately these highlights are overcome by extreme linearity, way too many trash mobs, next to no plot, and one of the worst cases of hitpoint bloat I have ever seen in a game (late game there are some random enemies with 4,000 hitpoints. Given that the average character can do 50-100 points of damage per turn, you can work out the problem here). I really love spiderweb games, so I hate to bash this, but this is probably their worst.

Chronicles of Elmyra

I’m changing my decision back to a positive about this game as I got in contact with the developer of where I’m getting stuck at and they are working on solutions to fixing the glitched areas as we speak. The game is great as well as the story and I can go back to recommending this game and that it is worth the money now. Thank you for contacting me 4p0 Informatica.

Creas

Synopsis

On a rainy night, Max finds himself in front of his desk immersed in his drawings as usual, he has difficulty stopping, bewitched by this obsession to recreate the creatures that haunts his mind. He eventually gave in to exhaustion and found his bed. The next day, he glimpses a stranger through his window who seems to be spying on him and decides to pursue him through the forest behind his home. Unaware, he is about to find himself in a conflict that endangers the survival of mankind, and even worse, he is the only person with the power to re-establish balance in the universe.

Universe

A young man discovers that the creatures of his imagination actually exist. They are called Creas and live on a planet called Ostral. The problem is, the Creas mysteriously teleport to Earth. He will then discover the secrets of an ancient civilization which would be the creators of humans as well as the Creas. They are called the Husters, named Creators by the Creas. Max is part of this lineage, he will have to uncover the reason why these creations suddenly appear on Earth and that the preservation of the balance between these 2 races relies on him.

Gameplay

The menu has been revised to look like a digital music player (Ipod), we find all the basic functions, except the equipment which is managed automatically, but also the objectives (Quests), Karma (Impact of moral choices) and even successes (Successes).

Combat

The combat system is turn-based. A rune system is included, it will be used to heal or revive the heroes during combat as well as to use bonuses that will improve the heroes stats. It is by attacking that the hero will fulfill the power of the rune that corresponds to his element.

By defending himself, he will be able to refill his energy which fuels the skills.

Variety

Creas also includes several other gameplay elements (Mini-games) which will change depending on the situations Max encounters. A racing system has been added

Choice

During the game, the player will have to make moral choices (Karma) which will sometimes affect the story as well as Max’s strengths and weaknesses.

Author’s comment

The current advancement represents the 1st act of Creas’s game, called ‘The arrival’.

Dice and the Tower of the Reanimator: Glorious Princess

Dice and the Tower of the Reanimator: Glorious Princess

This game is a part of The Reanimator Saga. Some of the same characters appear, but the stories are independent of each other and can be enjoyed separately.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1294380/_/

This work and Case 02: Paranormal Evilwere co-developed by MaouCat Studio and Sounding Stone. These two games share similar gameplay elements but have completely different worlds and stories.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1662340/_/

In this game, you play the role of a warrior who enters the Tower of the Reanimator to search for an elixir. You must use your dice to fight enemies. It tests your decision-making skills…and your luck! Collect equipment to increase the number of dice you can roll. Develop your own strategy and embark on an amazing adventure!

You have a certain number of destiny points (DP). At times when your roll is not good enough, you can make up the difference with DP. This allows you to change your destiny in a critical situation. However, DP are a precious resource: you must use them carefully!

There are many different ways to get through the same stage. You can use strength to defeat enemies, or you can use agility to dodge traps. Choose a gameplay style that works for you, depending on your equipment and preferences.

What conspiracy lurks in the tower and how should you deal with it? There are two different endings available that depend on your behavior in the game.

You can select “Hard Mode” where the dice will only roll below 3 or “Extreme Mode” where the dice will only roll to 1. Prove how good your strategy is when it doesn’t rely on luck!
