Planescape Torment has a great story. The atmosphere of the game is really cool, and the soundtrack is really nice. The soundtrack for the city of Curst is my favorite. It is an old rpg, and a lot of the game is centered around dialogue options. I recommend it if you have the time to play a slower paced rpg. If you play it stat up Wisdom, Charisma, and Intelligence for expanded dialogue. It is not my favorite classic rpg in terms of combat and game play, but I’m glad I took the time to beat it and experience this classic. Great game that doesn’t just feed you the story, you have to pay attention and piece it together as you go or you might just miss the deeper meaning. What can change the nature of a man?

ATOM RPG: Post-apocalyptic indie game

ATOM RPG: Post-apocalyptic indie game

After spending over 150 hours and an almost complete playthrough on this gem of a title, I thought it needed to be known what future enthusiasts may encounter when purchasing ATOM RPG. The game itself plays like a hardcore, top-down, turn-based, open-world RPG, with a degree of emphasis on survival elements (namely an in-game arbitrary hunger attribute). For some, this already may feel like a turn off due to added complexity, but for those who enjoy a challenge, then this is the game for you.

! Be warned though, this game is hard, especially in the early stages.

I have recieved this game as a gift from my friend, as I bought him the game first. As much as I played this game since May this year, I don’t feel like this game is truly polished after 1.0 release. I’ll keep updating this review as I’ll keep re-exploring the game, as well as the game patches will be coming out.

BALANCING

Welp. There’s none.

But to be serious - if you haven’t played this game before - prepare to get your ass kicked. A lot. Permadeath mechanic is okay in games that are balanced, but ATOM RPG isn’t one of them. You’re the most agile and the strongest character in the post-apo Russia? Well, too bad. Everybody has been training kung fu since age of three, and you’ll get kicked and punched to death pretty easily. Somehow, common civillians and elderly are stronger than actual bandits or cultists (which it would make you think they’re ones who should be stronger but that’s not the case. NPCs are also magicians that enchant their bullets and blades, making them seemingly deal more damage than you’d be capable of (even if you met the requirements!), resulting in a scenario where you’re one who is in a leather suit armed with hunting rifle but dying to a bandit with nothing but his underpants and a zip gun.

Disco Elysium - The Final Cut

Disco Elysium - The Final Cut

It is not a game, it is an experience. A very special one and totally unique. And it can be the best one you had in a lifetime of gaming.

I have finally reached a THOUSAND HOURS playing this game. So I guess it is time to review it. Every viable choice and path, probably saw all the dialogues, I dare to say. I really did everything possible, researched all the alternatives, even explored the most grim and absurd outcomes, just to see how far your freedom goes. I did it all. And it really gives you the most absurd amount of choices and risks to take. All the perfect choices, all the wrong ones on purpose. And usually, there is no wrong path to take. What kind of cop do you want to be?

SUGGESTION [Moderate: Success?] — “The first time I played this game, it filled me with a sense of nostalgia, which is weird because it was my first time playing the game. The music, the art style, the amnesiac protagonist, all contribute to that feeling… which has now turned into real nostalgia.

A few times, I’ve remembered the theme of the city proper, and had literal tears well up in my eyes, and loved every second of it. That feeling has made me come back to the game three or four separate times now, to try new skillsets, thoughts, and world views. The Final Cut update makes this process even better, as the writing and voice acting are really fucking good; even uncovering tiny new bits of writing triggers substantial dopamine hits in my brain at this point.

Drakensang

Drakensang

A party based RPG with great potential but quite unfinished and unpolished. Some people compare it to DA:O, NWN, BG, etc…(that being the reason I bought it) but that’s a big overstatement.

The bad:

1. The story/main quest - linear, blurry and uninteresting - does little to motivate the player to save the world.

2. The side quests are scarce, petty, uncomplicated and unrewarding.

3. The companions are plain, stereotyped and boring. They have no personal quests (except one), don’t develop with the progress in the game, rarely have something to say about quests/environment. Puppets with no personality, no conflicts, no banters, no life. The majority of them can be recruited too late in the game, so, for the first half, you will probably be stuck with the barking amazon and the cliché dwarf.

Ah, so this is where Dragon age origins stole all their ideas.. Of course that most likely isnt true. Judging by the release dates, the guys and gals over at Bioware were almost certainly unaware of the osbcure German title Drakensang, even tho Drakensang did come out first.

After beating Drakensang and enjoying it greatly, I couldnt help but notice similarities. Four member party- check. Pause and play tactical combat- check. Mages have magical skills and fighters get erm, fightery skills. Your archers stand back and sling arrows, you’ll need a rogue to open locks, disable traps and even smooth talk out of a situation or two. Its all done well, and made with obvious care, so if your into that sort of thing, your gonna like this.

Drova - Teaser

Drova - Teaser

This game has a lot of potential! The story shines though - it isn’t (at this stage at least) too complex. I very much enjoyed the action RPG style. Moving through the darkness was one of the best mechanics, along with the medicinal plant harvesting (and too much medicinal plant = toxic).

The two things I thought were potential issues were: 1. More than once, a location is described in terms that aren’t helpful. I just had to look in the general vicinity, but if it describes a location further away, this could be bad). 2. It seemed difficult to run and change weapons - possiblky part of that was due to the “ready weapon” graphics are barely different from the “weapon away” graphics. This is super simple to change, so I’m not all that concerned about this.

Free-to-try, and fun. :) I’ll give the teaser a 6/10 nostalgia rating for following in Gothic’s footsteps.

Overall, the interface is polished; the combat, while a bit fiddly, isn’t quite as clunky as Gothic 1’s. :) The ether mechanic is a bit odd, as is the resource you gain for hitting enemies while not getting hit.

The setting in the teaser is not so immediately captivating as Gothic’s, but the monster progression does have some of the Gothic feel.

Curious to see where this goes. :)

Dungeon Arena

Crappy repetitive game with no clear goal.

No Controller support.

There is not even a roguelike content. Just play, stay alive and die at the end with no reward or something.

Avoid at all cost.

Dungeon Arena is another asset flippy style construction kit/template ripoff from serial copy+paste “developers”, Enoops, who do nothing but pump out copies of game construction kit templates and dump them onto Steam and into cheap nasty game bundles as a cash grab. Dungeon Arena is no exception.

There’s ugly 2D retro pixel “art” in this 2D top down wave survival brawler pretending to be an RPG. Resolution and controls are locked. Instead of charging an insulting up-front fee for this shovelware garbage, Enoops have this time tried a different tack and are instead charging an insulting $8 for DLC to unlock all the samey “classes”.

ADOM (Ancient Domains Of Mystery)

ADOM (Ancient Domains Of Mystery)

Ancient Domains of Mystery… what a name. Truth be told, of all games I have played on my PC in the last 15 years, ADOM has surely been the one I keep returning to most often. And if there’s anything that hasn’t changed since the first time is that, whenever I do start up a new character, I can hardly keep myself off the game until the character dies… or until I win. Today the game is officially released on Steam, and the least I can do to repay ADOM and its team for hundreds upon hundreds of hours of fun is to review it.

Real player with 1030.1 hrs in game

There’s a lot I could say about ADOM but I’ll try to keep this brief:

Positives

  • The fact that the base ASCII game is, and always will be, free (it’s included in the Steam version, but you can download it stand-alone from the official website)

  • The new graphics update makes it much easier to see what’s going on and control your movements compared to the base game (i.e. if a monster is hostile to you, health bars, dots above sprites denoting status effects, the ability to click on things is especially helpful in your inventory,
