A Pleasant Surprise

I saw the mixed reviews and wasn’t expecting much of the game, but was actually pleasantly surprised how good it is. I can see why it got the mixed reviews though, as it has shortcoming but it is still very much enjoyable if you know what you are getting yourself into.

Basically the game is divided into two parts: XCOM like tactical combat and business management sim. On its own these two parts are not very special but luckily the game is more that the sum of it parts.

I don’t care if this game takes forever to win!

I am the boss of a crime family!

What I say goes!

DO NOT come into my territory!

I AM “Scarface” Al Capone, Frank “The Enforcer” Nitti, Bumpy Johnson, Dutch Schultz, Lucky Luciano, Bugsy Siegel, Meyer Lansky, James Cagney & Humphrey Bogart in “The Roaring Twenties”, Edward G Robinson in “Little Caesar”, Vito Corleone, Sonny Corleone, Michael Corleone, the guy who cut off the horses head and somehow got it up the stairs and under the sheets without waking anyone or leaving a blood trail and everyone else rolled into one!

To give this little gem a thumbs up was kind of a margin call. I do love Mafia games and grand strategy games and this one made it into my heart but there are a number of things that could and should be improved.

But let´s go with the PRO´s first:

PROs:

-) Easy to understand the game mechanics and therefore you can play right away and have fun

-) nice graphics and funny nicknames of the mobsters

-) Many different traits that can give you benefits for your rackets and therefore allow different approaches to grow your family operations (such as mobsters with specialisation or neighbourhoods that prefer a certain racket like gambling or upgrades after you have a number of the same rackets running etc…)

Company of Crime

Sometimes at the end of the day, when you need to talk about a game you’d recommend to someone, there are situations where you won’t say it’s a “good” game, or that it’s a particular pleasure to play, but you recommend the game because, for all its flaws and shortcomings, it has a spark. It has something that among the rest, makes it unique and enjoyable. Such is the case for Company of Crime.

A game set in London of the 60s, with a focus of gang wars and a strong influence from modern X-COMs, and to some extend Phantom Doctrine, has something to seduce. And indeed, the ambiance is there. The music, the clothes, the environnement. It’s all there. Yet, the game is, well, it’s janky. There is no hiding it, there are a bunch of bugs, some of with I had the dubious honor of helping to fix, but when you consider only 2 persons did all the QA, and the game was made by a very small team, you need to understand where you’re going. It is very much a game to get in the 15 euros or less, as that’s overall the value of such a game. It’s not big budget game, and what it delivers, I’m afraid to say, can’t possibly compete with a juggernaut like Firaxis backed by the greedy bastards at 2K(“2K, you love it, we ruin it!"). The core loop is repetitive fast, the enemies not varied, and while the heavy melee focused combat feels fresh and in some aspect reminds a bit of Into the Breach by some aspect(positioning and use of your skills to control the battlefield are key, and can lead to nice combos), at the end of the day, it won’t be something able to keep you hooked for too long, which is a bit of a shame.

Company of Crime:

Every country and indeed, city, in this beautiful world of ours has notorious individuals or gangs. Some are more famous than others. Al Capone and Lucky Luciano were probably the most notorious and known gangsters during the prohibition in America. In the 1960’s, the small and isolated island known as England had its fair share of dangerous criminals, with the Krays Twins and the Richardson brothers, to mention a couple. So, what is the business of crime? How hard is it to establish yourself and, most importantly, to keep yourself at the top of your game? On the opposite side of the coin, there are people who put their lives on the line to dismantle these organisations and arrest their members one by one. Will you become the next big mobster of the 60’s, or will you fight against them as the boss of Scotland Yard’s task force? One thing is for sure, you’ll know all about Company of Crime!

## Narcos: Rise of the Cartels

First things first: I've got this game for 1$, and I would have been feeling ripped off if I'd paid more than 2$. It's just the question of price and your desire to play mediocre, sub-level games when we have so many good ones on the plate. Narcos: Rise of Cartels is cheap-made. It is underfunded and underdeveloped.

Get me right: Narcos: Rise of Cartels is certainly not the worst game that I've played, even (especially) if we take tactical squad-controlling games in the "XCom wannabe" sub-sub-genre. You know, that idea of one shot and one movement per turn, and all that jazz? Well, the worst game in that specific subjective list would be ["Arma Tactics"](https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198112810429/recommended/224860?snr=1_5_9__402), but even that game wasn't All Bad, okay?

Narcos : Rise of the Cartels is an Xcom kind of game, simplified in many aspects. This does not make it a bad game at all, it is just more… basic.

The main difference you will notice is that instead of moving your whole squad before waiting for the enemy to make their move, is that you only move once with one character. Then the enemies do the same, and so on. This takes a little getting used to and makes everything a lot less strategic, but it's a different way of doing things.

You will also realize that 30 to 40% of the gameplay relies on using counteracts ( the equivalent of overwatch in Xcom ) effectively to have a clean mission. You will lose quite a few soldiers before figuring out how to use it properly, but once again, it's just a different way of doing things and not necessarily a worse one.

## City of Gangsters

An amazing game overall. I would like a few more features though, such as the ability to export goods to other cities, mansions that you can buy, maps based on Boston, New York, and Philadelphia, and the ability to buy off the mayor or even run for office.

Great management style game. Don't expect a game with heavy fighting as this is not the focus of the game. It's really how to max profit. Easy recommend for me.

## The Dope Game

The price isn't that bad, especially considering the current prices of the trading cards. The game itself however is pretty lackluster coupled with a mandatory install for another (free) game in order to unlock all the locations/perks in this game.

The "secret lab" isn't implemented yet, and the "fun park" is pretty dull as well.

The horrible horrible soundtrack.

The music, and sounds, isn't bad for the first couple of playthroughs. But once you get the basics down, and start spending -10 seconds on each screen it gets pretty frustrating.

### Overview

_Drugwars_, _Dopewars_, and now there's _The Dope Game_. Same concept, but now it's on Steam. In case the player somehow doesn't know the drill, every game starts with a player borrowing money in a turn-based strategy to speculate on the dope market all the while either avoiding (or winning) fights with gang members and cops while hoping to raise enough money to pay back the loanshark and keep buying and selling their way to riches before the days expire.

## Empire of Sin

Main quests:

- So far two of the paythroughs I have had have game breaking bugs for the main quests.

Police:

There is not enough interaction with the police, they are basically not even a problem. Give them more power, create tiers of police, where there are cops, investigators, feds, etc. Make it so that if you piss the police of by killing a lot of people you get a heat system.

Economy:

There is apparently a non ending need for alcohol, the game would be more interesting if your bar saw less profits and patronage because your neighboring faction has a better bar, higher quality booze, etc.

Seems like the game has that weird Paradox disease where the game is garbage day one but undergoes radical changes that make it into something really special. I bought it after the precinct update and I'm hooked. I like the combat and gang management elements as well as the almost seamless switching from tactical map to street view to turn based combat. There's also room for strategy, you can cut off sections of someone's territory to destroy their supply lines or trade poison disguised as high end alcohol to set some one up for the moment you take out their brewery in an ambush leaving them with nothing to sell and no one to sell it to. I think that it'd be a whole lot better with more room for customization but it's a solid solid game.

## Police Shootout

![](https://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/1279240/extras/san_adrino.png?t=1638262143)

**WELCOME TO SAN ADRINO**

Your name is Scott Price and you just started your first shift as police officer in a small city of San Adrino. You moved here from a bigger place where street gang fights are everyday life.

![](https://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/1279240/extras/radio_small.gif?t=1638262143)

**SO LET ME ASK YOU…**

Why did a policeman like you – the one who was doing well in a big city suddenly wants to take a chance in a place like this? What are you looking for here? What is your reason? Or maybe… What is your secret?

![](https://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/1279240/extras/strzelanie_small.gif?t=1638262143)

**LET'S TALK ABOUT THE GAME...**

Start your adventure with "Police: Shootout" and meet not only the main character (Scott Price), but also everyone who is important to his story. As a good policeman, you will answer even the most difficult calls. A shop robbery, or even a hostage situation - you have to be prepared for anything! But remember – it’s only up to you how you approach a specific situation.

![](https://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/1279240/extras/negocjacje_small.gif?t=1638262143)

**WHAT KIND OF COP YOU WILL BE? WHAT IS YOUR STYLE OF SOLVING THE CASES?**

There are many possibilities to do this right - sometimes the use of a gun is necessary, and sometimes a well-chosen argument is the best possible weapon.

![](https://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/1279240/extras/chodzenie_small.gif?t=1638262143)

Each of these situations brings you closer to finding what you’re looking for... And of course to be a better cop! The correct approach to the calls will allow you to expand your experience - the higher it is, the more benefits you’ll get. Your skills will grow the way you want, and this will allow you to complete new missions faster and more efficiently.

**LET'S GET TO WORK!**

Are you ready to step in and get it right? Don't wait any longer, the first call is waiting for you!

Just play the game and see for yourself!

## Rules of The Mafia: Trade & Blood

Feels like a concept/mod for improving the old gangsters by adding infiltration options for your gangsters. Though that's it, just the mod alone. You instantly bribe or kill officials and replace with people with your own. no election or other factors even. Game is a 'clicker'.

Last waiting part of game after having replaced mayor holding office for x time is waste of time.

Most events are plain annoying like raids that take your money and kill all your guards at shops.

Bugs: you drag a portraits around in the attack screen, then they disappear from screen, never to be seen there again. as result, I never attacked places. Just bribed them back.

Just as many people I was also hyped before the release because th game looked very promising to me.

What I then got was a game so basic, that even my Grandmother could have played.

Basically the whole purpose of the game is, that you (A premade Mafia Boss) controle all the City Buildings and the City Government.

You do this by raiding the Buildings or buying them and Bribing or threatening Government Officials so you can then install your own people.

Sadly that is all to the game and it is pretty much the same throughout every walk, which makes it pretty boring after just one game which you can easily win in 20-30 minutes.

This is a tough call for me. Let me say this…I have thoroughly enjoyed the game to this point. The enjoyment has come to a crashing (no pun intended) halt now however. I got to the point in the game where my don reached lvl 3 power. I was really happy with my progress...until...I tried to promote 1 of my soldatos to capo and assigned him to a new borough. That seemingly simple little action cost me FOUR rackets he was working in another neighborhood. They all were closed due to "lack of muscle" in that particular place. I thought to myself "how can this be"? So I decided to check discussions to see if others had this same problem. Not only did I find several with the same problem, this same bug goes back a few years to the game release itself. It was supposedly going to be corrected in an update, along with a few other small bugs. This bug has made the game un-playable for me. I am not holding out much hope for a correction since the devs are working on a sequel(?) It's a shame, but I did get my 24 hours of fun. As for anyone else buying and playing, use you own judgement.
