Been following this game since early development, tried the beta, and have watched the dev work streams. This game is amazing great story telling and the retro graphics sells the RPG element hard. The battle mechanics are very well done, absolutely loved what I have gotten to play.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Yakuza: Like A Dragon is a new spin on the series with a new protagonist and supporting cast that succeeds at breathing new life into one of my favorite video game franchises of all time. Returning players will find comfortable and familiar ground mixed with a new combat system that takes some getting used to but eventually feels solid. This is also a good starting point for newcomers to the series as it doesn’t require knowledge from the other Yakuza titles to be enjoyed to the fullest. Those with knowledge of prior games will have a more fulfilling experience as there are a lot of callbacks and memorable appearances from characters that were part of past installments.

For the seventh entry in the main series, we have a new protagonist and rather more controversially, an entirely new genre. Instead of the beat-em-up brawler gameplay of the previous six iterations it’s now a turn based SJRPG. For most companies pulling it off would be a tall order; for Ryu Ga Gotoku on the other hand the result is a masterpiece.

Remarkably the game doesn’t innovate much. The small(ish) open world maps stuffed with things to do is still the core of the game. Most of the old side activities like Karaoke, golf and mahjong are there along with some new ones, like a mario-kart style street race and a cinema minigame. The arcades still carry old Sega classics too. The combat, while new to the series, is still fairly standard SJRPG fare - on a characters turn they choose between attacking, using an item or skill; there’s a smattering of damage types and status effects like burning or poison plus some positioning rules. Aside from the set-piece battles random enemies roam the map and trigger combat if you get too close. Nothing outside the wheelhouse of a Fire Emblem/Disgaea fan in other words.

Yakuza 4 Remastered

Yakuza 4 Remastered

My Best Soundtrack Award nomination for the Steam Awards 2021. I actually like Yakuza 5 Remastered’s soundtrack more, but I had already nominated that game for the Game of the Year Award (sorry Halo Infinite, but imo there’s basically zero chance that campaign is gonna be good enough to make up for the so far meh multiplayer compared to The Master Chief Collection’s and top the masterpiece that is Yakuza 5).

Anyways, Yakuza 4 still has one of my most beloved soundtracks in the series (I’d place it in 2nd behind Y5 actually and very narrowly ahead of Y0), and the series as a whole (yes, even Y6 to be fair) has come to have my most cherished soundtracks in gaming beating out Halo. A handful of my favorite Y4 tracks are For Faith, Smile Venomously, Material Delights, Raindrops, and GET to the Top!. While Y4 is my least preferred out of Y0-5 (not sure yet where to rank LaD/7 as I’m still playing through it), it’s still a brilliant game much more fun and full of soul than most releases these days. If anything, I just hope both it and 5 one day get free DLC similar to LaD to restore the Slot & Pachinko minigames cut from the PC releases. I highly recommend giving the Yakuza series a try, starting with 0 and going in numerical order from there.

With the fourth game in the series (or five if you counted 0 as well but the game wasn’t made back then yet) the game have quiet the Improvement in term of combat system, comparing to the predecessor Yakuza 3.

While Yakuza 3 suffer from a clunky combat system Yakuza 4 improve upon it, although the improvement is relatively few but those few improvement benefit the game for the better. The story wise is rather utterly rough however, initially story started well enough until the second half of the game.

Crown Champion: Legends of the Arena

Crown Champion: Legends of the Arena

I’m actually writing a review for a game before I complete it, that I actually plan to complete shortly. This is a first. This is mainly since this game feels very RNG based similarly to ‘I am Overburdened’ in that regard. But this game let me put it to it simply, this is my FOURTH playthrough to try and get to the end. There’s that much in the game to consider that you have to think of when you start the game. Since if you do some things wrong early game it screws you over for the rest of the game.

This game is beyond awesome. It has SO much potential. I didn’t think it would be my thing, because strategy games usually aren’t my cup of tea, but I thoroughly enjoyed Crown Champion: Legends of the Arena.

Though technically this is a management SIM, and this seems to be up my alley after all.

If the game were to be tweaked periodically it could grow into something bigger & better for sure!

There’s so much to say about Crown Champion I don’t even know where to start.

As the player you find yourself playing as a Slave Manager. With that comes an estate (in a decrepit state), which you buy & renovate & expand as you make a name for yourself - battle, after battle.

Detective Kobayashi - A Visual Novel

Detective Kobayashi - A Visual Novel

First of all, I am really fan of this type of games, for example Phoenix Wright, The Room, Danganronpa … So my review will have of some comparisons with those games.I will give my opinion about some themes that I consider important:

GRAPHICS:Anime style, they are good and you can remember many characters for having such a unique style.Maps are fine too. For me this is 7/10:They are Okey

MUSIC:This is not quite right for me.Some soundtracks listen when they finish and it is not very pleasant because it takes you a bit of experience to hear the same song starting, ending, empty space, starting …However the songs are not bad so 5/10

As a huge Phoenix Wright fan, I had craved a similar game in quite some time, and I had to play Detective Kobayashi. It looks good on a PC screen, the character designs and backgrounds are very pretty. The first stories are not too hard to figure out, but the main fun is the gags and dialogue. I play with the voice volume turned off, since I’m used to this type of game without voiceover, just with silly faces and upbeat music. And because I like to imagine what the characters sound like.

Apart from the detective main story, an extremely fun minigame is texting random people on the phone and talking to them about various topics. It does not influence the cases as far as I can tell, but it is neat world building and learning to know the main character. The conversations are different in each chapter, so I make sure to activate them all right at the beginning.

New Ice York

New Ice York

This game is so much more than I expected it to be. At first, playing it- I was charmed by how weird it was but after playing through it, I found myself feeling connected to this universe and the characters within it. It’s intuitive- familiar, but totally different. Refreshingly fun, and an overall great release by magicdweedo, an artist I’ve really enjoyed since Mealmate™. Make sure to check out the soundtrack, too- it’s really catchy!

Real player with 8.7 hrs in game

New Ice York has deceptively good writing. The first chapter is unfortunately slow, which is a bad problem for a game of this length to have, but that slowness does its job of lulling you into a familiarity with the characters that it uses as a platform to build off of. NIY unfurls in a way similar to Frog Fractions or magicdweedoo’s last major game, Ticket: breaking its own rules and shuffling weird mechanics around. Where the former games engage themselves in a game of zany one-upsmanship, though, New Ice York’s treatment of mechanics is much more narrative and constrained. Detective has an oblique resemblance to Deadly Premonition’s Francis York Morgan / Twin Peak’s Dale Cooper, and similar to those stories New Ice York’s descent into surrealism takes on a personal significance in the quest of the protagonist.

Yakuza 6: The Song of Life

Yakuza 6: The Song of Life

If you are obsessed with Yakuza games just like me, then Yakuza 6 will be a good experience.

Plot is both captivating and nonsense, just like all the other Yakuza games. Sidequests are entertaining and funny. This huge “Onomichi’s secret” is silly as hell, but other than that, this game fulfill it’s goal being both a good and bittersweet conclusion to Kiryu Saga.

Cabaret Club is a little different and easier in this game. K2 clan battles are back, way less boring, but way more grinding. Snack New Gaudi is a different, yet kinda enjoyable new minigame. And spearfishing it’s actually pretty fun. I am still confused with baseball, though.

Another great addition to the franchise and while I feel like the ending could have been better. It is still a good yakuza game

Yakuza 3 Remastered

Yakuza 3 Remastered

Yakuza 3 has a little bit of a different approach than the previous series installments. With the new location and Kiryus new life circumnstances, it has a brighter and sunnier atmosphere. It also feels more like smaller slice-of-life story with more personal little sub stories.

Beside that you can expect typical Yakuza gameplay.

tl;dr this game is probably the worst aged of the remasters, and probably needed a top-down remake a la kiwami. by 2009 standards it is probably amazing, but what was amazing in 2009 is janky in 2019 (when this remaster was released). combat and animations are stiff, the game slows and crashes more often, and some aspects of the game are just annoying in general.

GRAPHICS/AUDIO

The game’s appearance has shown its age even with the remaster’s upscaling. Kiryu looks kind of weird and his general facial structure is more like an anime character than the people who walk around him. The animations outside of prerendered cutscenes are also considerably stiffer than the future games; Kiryu’s walking animation is more akin to a gliding animation with legs swinging.

Space Pilgrim Episode II: Epsilon Indi

Space Pilgrim Episode II: Epsilon Indi

A year after the Alpha Centauri Incident, Gail Pilgrim is still in the passengers business, though she has Sabina White, the clever scentist that became her co-pilot. Unfortunately, now in Epsilon Indi, she’s under the investigation of the J.A.C., the corrupt space police. Between the rebel scientist, the priestess of a strange cult and the young man that want to be a Jackal, Gail and Sabina have to survive the encounter. And what surprise is in stock for them?

This game is the sequel of Space Pilgrim Episode I: Alpha Centauri. So, you bet that you’re familiar with the ship. The story is still well-written, with the same humor as before: Gail still in dangerous situation, not really trusting herself, Sabina still logical and in her world and now, on top of that, a young man overconfident with himself, a scientist that is too absorbed in his work and a priestess that makes sense but not really. You still have Galactic Hospital as the sitcom on TV and the cat Zubar, though he’s not useful in this opus.

This game has mature content, mainly tame sexual or bodily references for humor. Recommended for teenagers and above.**
