Short review: I bought this game at a discount. She disappointed me! Standard graphics in real engine, I tried to play on 3 devices, 2 of them lagged very much, every 10 - 15 seconds! In steam, the passage of the game (community content) is completely different, in the current version, the game leads me to no clear place and does not allow me to go further! What struck me the most was that when trying to collapse the game and go to the desktop, there is an icon of the engine on which the game was made, and the program itself is displayed as “Myproject9” - it’s a shame, I put 2 stars, just because it works. It seems to me that the reviews are screwed up…

When you’re gonna ask people to pay $6 dollars for a game that can be completed in a half hour (my actual runtime was 32 minutes), you really need to pack it with an experience. Unfortunately, this game is minimal on just about everything. The game goes like this; go to room, read note, go to room, get key, go to room, read note, on and on and on. You probably spend more time reading notes than playing the actual game. In terms of scare attempts, there’s virtually nothing. Some loud noises in the background, a boy standing in a doorway, and a hanging body that occasionally swings. The build-up doesn’t even lead to a climax; you simply move into the last room and the game is over.

Kingpin — Life of Crime

Kingpin — Life of Crime

(1000+ hours now!)

I have played this game for over 500 hours since Spring 2019 now and I can honestly say it is better than any other game I have played. The amount of enjoyment I managed to get out of the singleplayer campaign, multiplayer deathmatch and mapping is eye watering

Everything that made me sink so much time into this fucking masterpiece of a video game:

The singleplayer campaign took me a couple of attempts to get into but once you recognise all of its quirks and the ways it works differently to other first person shooters you’ll be in for a mofoing ride - Kingpin’s grungy urban environments carry this oppressive atmosphere that no other game in the FPS genre does. The game doesn’t hold your hand, which at first may lead to a frustrating experience in Skidrow but you only need to talk to crucial NPC’s to learn about objectives and information about the area. Skidrow has the best usage of open level design with many things to do; a good number of later areas are simplified and linear in design but still feature elements from Skidrow in some capacity.

My review is divided between 2 sections (past and present), to give the game a fair score

Perspective of 1999 Review:

There is a large and vast library of first-person shooters for the PC on the market. This is a well-known fact, and with the emergence of groundbreaking 3D accelerators and blazing processors, the abilities to create more than “just a Doom clone” is more plausible than ever. Although a game can bust out some sci-fi elements or a tactical military background, it takes an ambitious team to create something different from the pack. Kingpin: Life of Crime is a prime example, with a setting that is quite literally “in a past that never crossed paths with the future” (also known as retrofuturism).

Welp, it’s free. That’s a good thing. This game is like going back to Windows 95. You might as well just load up Duke Nukem 3D instead. The game is choppy and the loading times are way too long for a game of this size on today’s computers. I experienced a few glitches, but nothing game breaking. I would really only recommend this to people who want to up their Steam achievement percentage as you can 100% this game in under 2 hours. Also, you will die a lot! Make sure you save your game!

What an outstanding mess. This is true trash, and I mean it in a positive way. I had lots of fun and hilarious moments playing this, even if nothing made sense to me.

But I won’t pay money for the expansion pack I am afraid.

A Sceptic’s Guide to Magic

A Sceptic’s Guide to Magic

Thumbs up! I liked the story about a skeptical scientist learning to cast spells in order to solve a murder. A lot of people won’t bother with this game since it was made with RPG Maker, but I thought the gameplay was okay. You don’t have to worry about grinding up through different levels, because there is no combat. Most of the challenge is in finding ingredients for the spells. Some ingredients weren’t easy to find, but if you get stuck, there’s a walkthrough available.

The achievements are pretty straightforward. You either get them for casting spells or for getting to an ending. There are a few different endings so you have to replay the final encounter a few times to see them all. In a nice touch, the game encourages you to save right before that point, so you don’t have to replay the whole game again just to see the different endings.

Author’s note: Every single ending was witnessed at the time the review was written for the sake of providing an informed opinion. (Every single achievement was also earned during that time as well.)

Overview

If the reader noticed this game was made by Pilgrim Adventures (the same amazing developer who brought us the Space Pilgrim Saga) then chances are the reader will be able to infer that A Sceptic’s Guide to Magic is a casual adventure game made with RPGMaker, has lots of interesting characters with detailed backstories, constant flip-flopping between adventures of a primary and secondary main character, and plenty of humor. These conclusions are not far off the mark, save for the humor being less frequent in A Sceptic’s Guide to Magic and the mood dramatically darker compared to Space Pilgrim Academy: Reunion. Set in 1993 in Birmingham, West Midlands (and not Birmingham, Alabama!) forensics investigator Lester Chapman is called to investigate a murder in an abandoned house involving a young man with evidence about that suggests witchcraft was somehow involved in the murder. After apparently hallucinating, Lester is taken off of the case and comes into contact with a young witch named “Fi” who is also interested in the murder, and the two team up with Lester reluctantly becoming a practitioner of magic, and ultimately gaining the ability to investigate the murder with methods that prove otherwise impossible without Fi’s assistance.

Cross the Moon

Cross the Moon

This was an amazing experience from start to finish. Not only were the individual elements of music, art, writing, editing and directing, all individually great; the way they all came together really raised it to a new level. Definitely up there out of all VNs I’ve played. It’s so cheap too, there’s no way anyone should miss out on this deal.

Real player with 25.3 hrs in game

Cross the Moon is different from most VNs I’ve played. There’s no choices, just some collectibles for additional lore, but I don’t think that takes away from the experience. The art is on point? There’s fantastic use of color in the backgrounds, and I’m glad I picked up the OST too.

The story is well-paced, and I found it compelling, though it might not be to everyone’s taste. I was also happy to see multiple queer characters in the cast. And the 3 main characters are all POC which is kinda unique for a VN. The protagonists are a teenage boy, his older sister who’s just starting her career, (the siblings are vampires), and a police officer (who is human). They all intersect with the story and each other in interesting ways and, I don’t really want to say too much more and spoil things.

Mafia II: Definitive Edition

Mafia II: Definitive Edition

I’m really getting tired of this unfinished re-released mess of a game that claims to be “Definitive Edition”

Update changes can be found the the end of review.

Disclaimer: Just because i have received it for free since i own the classic copy, it dosn’t mean that i should tolerate the progressively lower quality end product, ESPECIALLY since it was better before. So i will try to inform the new buyers to what they are signing in for.

The graphical uplift is barely noticeable to classical version. Sure there are some changes like; super shinny surfaces, better makeup for our ageing characters, altered weapon sounds and God like car lights that can blind the blind person. Oh yeah and there is two new cars;

Some would call Mafia II: Definitive edition a hot mess, or that It needed a lot more content and graphics upgrades to be considered “Definitive”. I’ve looked at over 100 reviews of this remastered game, 98% of which are completed wrong and unfair. Half the people never gave it a chance and never looked into the smaller details or took notice of anything. The other half are bagging on it because others are too, to the point where people are making up lies to make the game seem worse. This is my complete “REAL” review of Mafia II: Definitive Edition.
