Hilopet started out as a challenge, as the development team was tasked with creating a game that mimicked the nuances of a physical toy. Since its inception and original prototype, Hilopet has grown to become a full-fledged title, with an active combat system, NPC’s to interact with, and secrets hidden within the device itself! The amount of new content goes way beyond your run-of-the-mill scope creep!

This is the best monster catching game I have ever played!

In case you only read the first line I want to stress that point more than any other. I tried to keep this review spoiler free. Just in case this a spoiler warning. I have had SO MUCH FUN playing this game and I want to make sure people wont miss out on this experience. Nexomon is as far from being “Just another Pokemon clone” as you can get. I will include some information for those who are undecided about Nexomon Extinction.

Now there are some similarities to other monster catching games but that is sticking to the genre. You need locations to heal your Nexomon. You need people to battle and strengthen your team. But the Nexomon team have included many unique elements to their game that I feel truly sets it apart from other games.

Nexomon: Extinction is a Pokemon knock-off, but a fairly good one I think that does enough to distinguish itself and make it worth a buy.

GAMEPLAY

The gameplay of Nexomon Extinction is very similar to the main-series of Pokemon games. You go around the world battling Nexomon, of which you have a team of up to six on you, each of which has up to four moves. It’s not completely identical though, there are some minor differences. In battle, rather than having PP, moves all have a certain stamina cost which use up some of your Nexomon’s stamina bar. Personally, I prefer this system actually, first it’s a bit more realistic, for what that’s worth. It is also a bit more strategic since there is a drawback to using more powerful moves. They use more stamina, and that will limit the amount of moves total you’ll be able to use. There are fewer types than in Pokemon, also (9), and there are no dual-types. One thing that I quite liked was that you had a choice of 9 starters, one for each type. If anyone’s curious I picked the Noki when I played through the game, though I was torn between it, Mara, and Lume.

In active development since 2016, this is a first-person strategy game about summoning demons and toppling a civilization one castle at a time in order to re-live the story of the man who already did that. Gain the trust of that man - your jailor - by embellishing the details if you wish but the one thing you must do is become the new king while taking no lives with your own hands.

Some demons are stealthy; others not so much. Summon an army, manage them well and control the flow of information across the battlefield to catch Keeps and Castles unawares or poorly defended. But beware, the summoning process compels them to follow you around but that’s all - they still retain their own fickle personalities and will quit your service in the worst way possible if ever they stop having enough fun.

The game is a solid Pokemon style game, but with much better battles I think. Overall it felt quite polished.

Combat

1. The team dynamics make battles exciting and require coordination between Murgles.

2. Most fights are tough which is good in my opinion.

3. Fights aren’t too long or too short. I think they are just right to have some tactics in them, but not last forever.

Progression

1. The team dynamic creates a lot of build options for what Murgles you want to use on your team.

This is a very simple game idea. You take photos of mostly happy, colorful creatures, solve some simple puzzles, play minigames. What makes Alekon very interesting is the memorable creature design, but it’s worth mentioning that, as you go further, it’s getting harder to memorise all of them.

It’s fairly easy to move forward in the game, you are not forced to finish everything (but some skills make your life easier, specially if you try to make every photo 10/10) I would say childfriendly, if we don’t count some of the minigames are kinda hard (But as far as I see, the devs are taking feedback and fixing those, so you can partly ignore this comment) and the situation with the Shrooma minigame, that felt a bit odd.

Bird by Example is — and I say this with great passion — an RPG sandbox where all the occupying NPCs are grotesque birds who mimic your behavior with deep learning algorithms. Nothing is scripted! Everything is emergent! Be the bird you want to see in the world!

It’s an artificial intelligence sandbox acted out by birds with concerning musculature! Help them see, help them love, help them eat a big fat bug! Right now at this very second, the metaphysical bounds of this game hold a throng of hungry birds who wish nothing more than to be like you! Like Mama!

_*: Imprint psuedo-neurologically upon independent bird agents, using recurrent neural networks, gradient descent, and a custom-built system of semiotic metadata evocation (to afford transferrable behavior between distinct objects and agents which share characteristics along an n-dimensional space).

**: Isn’t life a story? Aren’t we all little stories, flying on this crazy rock?_

You said this was a game? Who’s Mama? I’m Mama? Who are you again?

Please pay attention. These birds are equipped with artificial neural networks that optimize themselves against your own actions! Using trendy deep learning algorithms found in a black box at the bottom of the sea, and something called ‘gradient descent’, they will try to become mathematically perfect distillations of you! It’s very computationally expensive and very math!

But what do you actually do?

Explore, follow self-imposed rules, and cultivate your flock! Tutor a bird to act just like you! By simply doing things, they will learn from you by witnessing your play! Bite an orange and you may start to see other birds doing similarly! Squawk at a another bird and watch your flock erupt into squawkage!

Oh! That’s interesting. So they have brains!?

Yes, you do live in fear! You’re like any brain-wielding creature! But in Bird by Example there will be nothing to be afraid of! In bird world there is nothing to be afraid of! Nothing to be afraid of! Turn that brain off!

Okay. And the game is fun? It’s a game?

You must teach the rest of the birds basic life skills! If not, they will all starve to death!

Wait, you coded these birds to feel hungry but didn’t teach them how to eat?

That feature was out of scope! Please!!! Hungry!!!

Hold on… What’s a bird?

A bird is a fictional creature which came to me in a dream on a particularly cold night in February. I woke up in a sweat the next morning and quickly tried to recreate the apparition from memory. The results? Remarkable.

Earliest known footage of a “Bird” from that morning.

They were perfect. All they needed was a name.

The word ‘Bird’ is a mix of the word ‘word’ and the letter ‘b’ This is because I needed a word — or “wird” — to describe the birds. Sadly, a word using ‘a’ was already taken. It’s like gamertags!

I experimented for many weeks with flight, but no matter how much I stretched out their arms they would not.

Whatever. Doesn’t matter.

Soul Reaper

Soul Reaper quickly hooks player attention with an effectively deployed progression system, and does a fine job in offering multiple avenues to keep engagement levels high. While enjoyable for the most part, its grindy nature can render it tiresome, and the current lack of proper side quests beyond feats leaves something to be desired. Still, it’s a good debut, and a fresh ambassador for the RPG genre that leaves a lasting impression by defying convention.

Really nice, and fast paced; monster-catching strategy RPG. The game has aspects of idle-game style gameplay, however the strategy comes from squad optimisation, gear socketing, and order placement (there are ‘row bonuses’ available, but those’re kinda beyond me at the current time of writing, lol).

Leave no cat behind! This game is fun and pretty crazy. Can get pretty challenging when the cats don’t all want to fit in the cupboards. And watch out for the bunny boogey man, he’s pretty quick!

Decided to pay for this one as I spent countless hours on Overfull Games previous game, “Plant Daddy”.

I do not regret the money I spent! And I am kind of stingy, especially when it comes to entertainment.

If you like breeding, if you like paleontology, if you like puzzles, if you like decorating, if you like making pretty things! I recommend this game. Fun, intuitive, calm or fast paced depending on your own mood, work as slowly or quickly as you like.

Simple controls.

Few bugs, as it is early release, very minor, sometimes fun/funny!

Super relaxing, super satisfying, super adorable game about completing fossil puzzles and adding them to your ever-expanding fossil collection. It’s the fun kind of addictive!

Initially I was a little hesitant to try it, since in my experience random-generated content tends to be pretty samey, and I wasn’t sure if generated puzzles was something that could even be pulled off. I was pleasantly proved quite wrong, though - the puzzles usually aren’t major brainteasers, but they are enough to keep your attention, and at the end you get to add a new item to your collection to display, which gives the game this well-built, satisfying feedback loop; doing chill puzzles, earning money and fossils, spending money to decorate your room and put more of your cute little fossils on display. Something I especially like is how the game takes something that actual paleontologists do - sort fossils by minimum changes each generation to find their evolutionary paths - and turns it into a puzzle game! A few seemingly simple mechanics make for a surprisingly fun and engrossing game. I’m very excited to see the content updates the developer is adding soon, too. :
