Night Spasm

Night Spasm

Author’s note: Plans for a revised review and fourth good faith effort to play Night Spasm are off indefinitely after the developer removed the “you lose” screenshot and made ol' Il Pallino do a week in Steam Jail. Buyer beware: Players run a risk of also having their screenshots removed and being unable to upload screenshots for all of their games for a week.

Overview

Take RPGMaker to make an adventure/RPG game with graphics and sound consistent with the fourth generation of consoles, throw in some brilliant dialogue, interesting gameplay features, and make combat more difficult than the Hard setting for FTL: Faster Than Light, and you have Night Spasm. The game starts with an airplane pilot named Theodore flies passengers to a (presumably) tropical island on January 2’nd., 2020 in which the plane gets caught up in a most unusual storm and catches on fire. Theodore awakens in another world coincidentally revealed to be named Island, which is the center of all of the dimensions, and comes face to face with the Man of Goodness (“MOG” for short) who sent a gold storm to recruit people in the only inhabited universe to do battle against a grim reaper-like villain named Inevit, who has taken control of “The Rechance” from MOG. After meeting up with the co-pilot and flight attendant aboard the plane, Theodore and his party are taken to a training ground which functions as a tutorial which (as of the time of this review) is the only truly enjoyable part of Night Spasm From there, the party teleports to the base camp which information is provided about the various functions of the base camp. From the base camp, the player then goes to world A1 in which the party is killed in the second battle if they’re even lucky enough to win the first battle.

EDIT: Warning: Game has been abandoned by the developer. Game is still good (multiplayer’s a wreck) but there’s not much hope for bug fixes and additional QoL/features.

The last development news was posted October 30, 2019 … then two months later (December 21, 2019 ):

“As you might have noticed, I was kinda inactive the past two months - this was mainly due to real life and the game not being as successful as I would have wished :frowning: I can’t promise when I’ll be back…”

Game is surprisingly good! Its a mix between RTS, Tower defense, and most importantly… Its a zombie game!!! Its stupidly simple for beginners and shockingly hard if you want to get to those higher waves! Although there is one thing that’s bothering me about it. The spawner boss zombie, says it in the name, it spawns zombies. But, it also has an electric arc that hits multiple buildings. And that electric arc that’s whats bothering me! Why does it have a electric arc? Its a boss that should only spawn zombies and to me, it really hurts newer players that make it to wave 50. I’ve made to a high wave and that one particular zombie is the bane of this game. It completely disrupts game-play as you frantically figure out a way to stop it. Although I’ve only 12 hours clocked into this game (as of posting this review). this one time i got a seed (or map..? Its unclear on what’s its supposed to be.) that had a crystal mine but could only place 1 crystal miner by it, due to it being mostly in the fog. If those issues don’t bother you, all the more power to you! Overall, this game is a mix of different genres, has great game-play, has few glaring issues, definitively a solid 4.5 out of 5, and the dev team working on this made a game worthy of your $7. Go pick it up and see how far you can make it! or if you’re on a browser, go see the game for yourself for FREE! Safe travels zombie killers!

I was having fun both times I tried (before and after patch) but game breaking bugs disappointed me a lot. If the devs fix these bugs, the game has great ideas.

Pros:

  • fun bossfights

  • cool atmosphere

  • GREAT voice acting, can make you feel uncomfortable (as a horror game should be)

  • the game doesn’t force jumpscares to give a feel of horror, but it doesn’t feel uneasy at all

Cons:

  • a lot of game breaking bugs, you literally have to restart the game from scratch

  • the game is slow but you don’t have time to explore since you have a timer ticking to kill you

Giving this a positive in advance since i REALLY trust in the future of this game. It has a lot of potential to become a unique survival horror, so this will probably remain positive in the future if the devs do everything right.

TL;DR: The game has lots of bugs ranging from very minor to game-breaking. Dying in the game means nothing, just a slight time inconvenience. The devs are not active on the steam forums, got no replies from anyone at all. Lots of potential if the devs follow the implement-more-difficulty-options route and actually start replying to people.
