Darkout

Darkout

I can’t seem to think how to write this review properly right now, so I’ll just go with an easy pro-con list.

Pros:

  • The environments are quite pretty to look at and the lighting is nice (though the player character looks like a bad CGI creature from a 90’s music video)

  • Has a lot of nice variety in terms of stuff to craft, mine or place

  • Uhhhh… I really can’t think of any other points at the moment

Cons:

  • The story in this game is forgettable and uninteresting.

There is quite a bit to say about Darkout. I’ll try to be as non-partisan as possible.

With the explosion of greenlight games and the large number of ‘Metroidvania’ sandbox style games on Steam, it’s hard to make one stand out from the rest. Darkout, like Terraria, or Starbound, takes yet another approach at these sandbox style games, but, of course, is still very much the same.

Indeed, Darkout is much the same old grind. Spending hour upon relentless hour, mining through piles of the same dirt, and rock, only to fill your inventory and discard, rinse and repeat. Just enough to get you the resources to build an elevator to reach the depths of the shaft you just dug. With the same old spotty mouse targeting as others, a horrible grouping system for mining, a terribly inaccurate crafting system, and a slew of other annoying bugs, it is tedious at best during these hours, searching for resources, and can often be a real chore, during these times, to play.

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin

Came here as a gamer… left as a professional rice farmer degree

The realistic, in depth elements of rice farming combined with honing fighting skills plus surprising character revelations and development make Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin a magnificent game. Beside its beautiful story‚ Sakuna’s personal growth is a pleasure to watch. Her reason for living is tested to the limit. I’ll leave a TLDR at the bottom.

I was hesitant yet curious coming into Sakuna. A game that’s half side-scroller beat’m up, and half in-depth rice farming is something unique and interesting to me.

We are introduced to Sakuna, a daughter of harvest goddesss Toyohana and war god Takeribi. Sakuna is a goddess who resides in the capital indulging herself on all sorts of expensive luxuries until one day she meets a certain group of humans and gets involved in an unfortunate event that has her and the group exiled to an isle of demons called Hinoe. It is on this isle that Sakuna will grow rice, hunt demons, and come to learn more about the humans that were exiled along with her.

Game is fantastic!

I suppose the most relevant game for comparrison is Terrarria. Of course with that game and many countless games similar to this nothing really kept me playing more than a handful of minutes for one time. I realize that the openess is a draw for alot of folks but for me it’s just like what the point. It needs to offer and exceptional setting and fun mechanics to make me want to play a game not character and narritive driven like most games i play. This game does that exceptionaly.

Okay, so right off the bat, I really like this game. It’s fun and creative and I haven’t even tried multiplayer yet. The crafting is a blast and working for ever-better gear is very rewarding.

I have two major complaints, however.

One, the player is FAR too large for a game like this. It’s very annoying to get constantly hung up on various small bits of terrain that you missed, especialy when mining in caves.

Second, the game’s difficulty is very inconsistent. Usually, the enemies are little threat to you unless you’re heavily outnumbered or ambushed. The bosses, however, are mind-blowingly difficult. You come to really dread challenging the boss of the next dungeon (even though it might be a part of the design) because you know he’s gonna be a mean motherfucker and he is going to wipe the floor with you. The sometimes clunky jumping controls are currently giving me a damn nightmare on the third boss, which is where I’m currently stuck. If I can state some advice; you may laugh at the idea of energy refills when you first unlock them, but you’ll use every last one during a boss battle, and wish you had more. The huge hitbox of the player character doesn’t help at all, and the fact that spawned minions can sometimes carry over from previous boss attempts (sometimes with upgraded attack or defense) makes it extremely difficult to even get in range of the boss without being swarmed. It all feels rather cheap, in a sense.

Mercenary Kings: Reloaded Edition

Mercenary Kings: Reloaded Edition

‘You can’t be serious. Okay listen, this is a suicide mission. There are hundreds of enemies, we know nothing about the terrain and only have very limited suppli-…’ – ‘It’s okay, we’ll send in the KINGS, they can handle everything.’ Insert some dramatic music

‘Mercenary Kings‘ is an interesting recipe: You take a portion of ‘Mega Man‘, add some elements of ‚Monster Hunter‘ and spice it up with a pinch of ‘Metal Slug‘ or ‘Contra‘. This may sound like a very odd combination and the reviews are quite ambivalent about the qualities of the game but especially in co-op this game is a blast.

First Impressions

When I first saw the trailer, I thought of an earlier era of gaming. Many older games consisted of military members lugging around guns, dodging flashily colored bullets, and charging enemies. Over time the emphasis shifted from 2D games like this to 3D FPS. It’s nice seeing this style of game nowadays, and this is what caught my eye, in spite of a lackluster overall rating. Having put so much time into the game, I understand the mixed results better now, and hope to explain the ups and downs of this game.

I enjoy being able to have a second account on my PC to really get to go through the entire early game, it’s pretty fun especially since I know basically all the tips and tricks beforehand lol. But to newcomers, this game can be very confusing with descriptions in some places or some things may not entirely make sense so I HIGHLY recommend joining the Discord server to be able to ask any questions to us (I am Fwuffy Doge). :3

Works as advertised - a surprisingly deep and fun game to just run on the side while doing other stuff. And then you get a new ship and you don’t even realize it took your full attention for an hour. So many details to optimize:

-Raw Damage

-Number of projectiles

-Bullet trajectory

-AOE

-Piercing

-Bouncing

-Critical chance

-More I’m forgetting

And that’s on top of the maze you have to create in each ship to get from the projectile generator over to the gun points. Good stuff.

Admittedly, the UI definitely needs some work. The game itself is almost a puzzle that you unlock as well as you get further, the captains, the endless missions, the random new weapon slot you forgot you can unlock by scrolling down more.

Going the Distance

Going the Distance

This is a fun launcher game that is super relaxing and has nothing bad going on at all. Good gameplay, very nice story and characters as well.

I would suggest playing this game if your into horror or launcing games. Though to be aware does start slow, though it picks up super quickly in later levels.

FULL playthrough here (not on story(easy) mode once it uploads): https://youtu.be/SpLKHxlZ4Kc

This game is hard, but the story is amazing and it’s a ton of fun. I definitely didn’t see the game going how it did, but I loved every second of the main story. I will say I believe some of the items on the 2nd stage are impossible to get (mainly pothole 7, possibly 8 I couldn’t even find the thing in pothole 8 7 I just couldn’t possibly get to the left far enough while falling unless there’s a mechanic with the rover that’s not explained. Honestly this was worth every cent of $4.99 The visuals are amazing the play is fun even though grindy as a mf and i hate the blimp stage they’re so long. ACHIEVEMENTS DO NOT WORK AT ALL I beat the whole game and I’m 0 out of 35 which is a complete shame. If you want an amazing game though buy this. Now I have to go take my exam after playing this game for 13 hours straight and not studying adult choices xD. It was a struggle, but I went the distance (insert Cake song).

Crea

Crea

Hi everyone. I’ve been part of the Crea community for a very long time now and I finally got around to updating my review. I’m going to go through the features of the game and talk a little bit about them so you know a little about the game beforehand.

Important Note: Since I wrote this review I’ve become part of the Crea development team. As such I won’t be updating this review further as I feel that being part of the development team would result in a biased review. That said, this review was written at a time when I was not part of the development team. So the original review still stands in its integrity. It is worth noting that many things about the game have changed since the review, so it’s no longer necessarily accurate.

Real player with 522.8 hrs in game

I don’t write a lot of reviews, or a lot of anything, so bear with me.

Crea is a very fun game. Combat, mining, building, and crafting in a 2D world. It’s similar to Terraria, which is what interested me, but far far from a clone. It’s early access, so expect bugs. Luckily, the developer is very active on the forums. He is very helpful, and I’ve personally watched him solve three or four bugs on his twitch stream. I believe he spends hours every day with his stream up, and anyone can come in and inform him of difficulties they’re having. I also think he has promised to release updates every week, however some weekly updates might only be bug fixes.
