Lockheart Indigo

Lockheart Indigo

Lockheart Indigo was a short but fulfilling experience, with all of its parts forming a cohesive whole. The art, the music, the characters and the gameplay all fit together seamlessly to tell an exciting story.

It offers a unique system where, instead of battling your enemies in combat, you have to win them over with clever persuasion. And it’s clear the developer took a lot of time in crafting the various responses to show each character’s unique personality and motives.

I definitely recommend this game, it was a joy to play and a great homage to the Game Boy era from which it took its inspiration.

About 2-3 hour long detective game where the combat is replaced with interrogation, it’s kinda like playing Undertale and only using the dialogue choices (no bullet-hell though). Whenever you need to get information from the character you have to find a way to probe them by using evidence and their motivations against them. The story was decent enough for me to finish the game, but I was a bit disappointed with the illusion of choices as the game is pretty linear overall. You can use F4 to set the game to fullscreen, however, it does not have a widescreen so you will be playing with black borders. Even though the game is relatively polished and resistant to stupid choices, there are some potential softlocks due to the enemy AI, you should keep 2-3 save slots 30 minutes apart just in case (I wasted like 40 minutes because one of the quest items became inaccessible).

Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan

Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan

Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan is a pacifist, pokemon-esque game with visuals inspired by old rubber hose cartoons and/or Cuphead. I would recommend playing with a controller.

The game was very fun and easy to play, the game also offers varying difficulty settings to make it easier if need be. I really enjoyed the battle system and the creature collection. For how few levels there are, there are quite a few creatures to befriend. Each of the creatures have two designs, one black and white and one in colour. I like the edgy look of the black and white designs better personally, but the colour designs look alright. You can level up your creatures only twice, but each creature has a backstory that’s revealed through levelling up, so there is a bit of content in those two level ups.

The adventures of Rainbow Brilly… sorry, I mean Billy, is one that very few people can’t relate to in some way. Whether it be from the semi-nostalgic art style, being a mixture of Paper Mario’s style and a lot of classic 2.5D games, or the various mini-games that count as “actions” for you to find, it’s hard to deny that this Rainbow has a color for everyone, even if it doesn’t seem quite in your spectrum.

For the positives of this game, I’d commend it’s simple, yet still interactive style of puzzles and encounters or “confrontations” as they’re called. Your objective in almost every fight is to color your opposition’s world; and I said opposition instead of opponent because there’s not really that many characters that are outright antagonistic as their point. They’re trouble souls, just like you, and your way of combating their gray outlook on life is to talk to them and use the support of your other friends and /their/ other friends to help them realize that there’s more to life than just one shade.

Simple and fun game. Very short, unless there is more stuff to do Im not aware of, but I found it enjoyable for how laid back the game is. The controls were hard to get used to, but once I did there wasn’t really any issue. Definitely an early access game as certain things don’t seem to be there or got weirdly cut off, but from what I see the dev updates the game often so Im sure it will be fun to keep up with. :)

I saw no relevant reviews, so gave it a shot. I often like game books with a little RPG to them.

As of this writing, its 3 bucks to buy. Its about right. I’m fairly certain this is a first attempt from the developer to make a game. The presentation is plain, but does have some nice pictures thrown in occasionally. The font to select options is a little hard to read, and I encourage the developer to read up a little on UX design and user interface.

Its a game book, so how is it? Its pretty amateur. The writing is sometimes a bit awkward, but it gets its point across. Feel like playing the captain of a mercenary group during a zombie apocalypse and you want the 3 dollar version? Here you go.

## Caravaneer 2

There are some good bits in this game, but for me, the tactical aspect totally kills it. It is so inbalanced, or rather in favor for AI that it is beyound laughable. Fights will accur as it is part of the game. Now, to keep it simple, you have a Katana, hit enemy who gets 12-20 hit points. He hits you and you suffer 24-42 damage. Even with light armor, makes no difference. Later in the game I had an awesome Armor of Honor (25 damage res), I get hit with a Mosin gun for 40-46 points. I use same gun, or even better M-16 on enemy who has no or light armor (6 damage res) and score 10-12 points. Time after time. BS! Also, remember that it will be almost impossible for you, even later in the game, to hit anything beyond 20-24 tiles, while AI will frequently score hits from 70-80 tiles away. Loads of BS in a bucket of sh-ite. NOT RECOMMENDED!

I originally played this and the original as Flash games, I even went so far as to download BlueMaxima's Flashpoint almost specifically for this one, due to how good it was. The economic simulation, layered with a competent, if monotonous, combat system, as well as a fairly engaging story lent itself to a game that tied me up for absolute ages. I plan on playing this for an inordinately long time, and I already have!

I won't bother with beginner tips, but keep in mind the game has a strong learning curve; I recommend playing "Story" mode if you're just starting out for all the free goodies and volunteers. Sandbox puts you in a significantly more difficult starting area, and a generally poorer starting position, i.e. Much fewer free goods and starting facilities. Once you've gotten the hang of it, you'll come to recognise it's trade patterns and idiosyncracies, and really start to get a feel for the game.

Pros

- Tough but rewarding combat system

- Hand drawn art style that suits the tone

- Exploration is engaging most of the time

Cons

- Some characters do not evolve much and the story starts quiet and not a lot happens

- Even though most of the story arcs get a resolution the game ends with a cliff-hanger, hinting to a follow up title but leaving some things unanswered

Let’s start off with the aesthetic look. I really appreciate the hand-drawn style and the effort of customise every visual aspect even though there are not many dynamic elements, like leaves, wind effect etc.
