The Corruption Within

The Corruption Within

I backed the Corruption Within on Kickstarter (you’ll even encounter my portrait as you play the game :D ), and was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to beta test it. The few minor niggles I found were quickly corrected and I was surprised at how well the game was put together even at that early stage.

The Corruption Within has a seriously creepy mood. The story is well written and even though it is obvious from the start that the inhabitants of the mansion are a creepy bunch, it doesn’t get overly predictable and managed to keep me intrigued throughout. There are plenty of characters who all have their own secrets and desires, which you uncover while puzzling your way through the mansion. The puzzles range from dialogue puzzles to inventory object puzzles to logic puzzles and are pretty sensible. There are quite a few objects that the game doesn’t allow you to pick up unless you have a reason for doing so, which can be counterintuitive to adventure gaming veterans. So, if it doesn’t let you take a seemingly useful object, keep a mental note of it and, when you encounter a situation that requires that object, go back and try to pick it up again. Also, be sure to always talk to the characters about everything you can. The conversations often open up new possibilities, required to progress, as well as give hints and further the story.

I am a huge fan of Dave Seaman (Captain Disaster - Death has a Million Stomping Boots). So, when he teamed up with Cosmic Void on this game, I was delighted to be a part of the Kickstarter campaign and even more honored to do a Beta Test before release.

This is a very well crafted, traditional point-and-click adventure done in pixelated graphics. Set in the Victorian Era, you are on a camping trip and wake to find your family missing. Since cell phones are in the distant future, you hike to a nearby mansion to make inquiries. There, the fun begins. The introduction is narrated but the game itself has no voice overs. The amount of dialog is just about perfect - not too much but enough to give you a sense of the characters and their history. The original sound track creates a mood of adventure and suspense. Without venturing into spoilers, the plot thickens very quickly!
