Red Rust

Red Rust

Red Rust is retro-style side-scrolling game which uniquely combines fighting mechanics with shooting mechanics. The game is heavily inspired by 8bit and 16bit hits of the 90s, but it’s being developed with the modern player in mind. Tons of great animation, hand-drawn backgrounds, variety of in-game situations and powerful soundtrack!

It’s the year 1984 and you control Agent Red (or just Red), a soviet KGB officer who has been sent to the West on a secret mission. She is an attractive but brutal and cold-hearted girl! Over the course of the game she learns to understand her own emotions and the unfamiliar world around her.

Lamp Chronicle

Lamp Chronicle

This game has serious potential , but in its current state needs some heavy polishing from the developer.

It has great art, a lot of very nicely drawn enemies with different patterns, a pretty decent soundtrack that blends really well with the environment. However:

A)the combat feels off and can be improved with some changes. For example dashing and dodging are purchased as perks from an npc and you can actually get them after some hours only to find out that dashing sends you straight onto an enemy losing 2 hearts as a result, while dodging is pretty much useless as you roll backwards and not forward. The only option to get behind an enemy is to jump over it, which is impossible in most boss fights. In order to attack you remain stuck in a place and can’t move which is quite bad given enemies run into you and you can’t keep them away. There isn’t any air time when attacking a flying enemy, so you can only land a single or 2 hits at most per jump. Also no ability to turn around at the spot, as well as zero recovery time after taking a hit.

Pros:

-Cute, lovely graphics/setting

-Many abilities to choose from although they are slow to unlock. At 50% completion I only had 3 active abilities.

Cons:

-Unpolished controls, weak core move set.

-Uneven pacing, progression and lots of backtracking.

-Environmental hazards are more dangerous than enemies, the game plays more like a bullet hell game than a platformer.

-There’s little strategy to the fights. No blocking is possible and the dodge move is useless. You just soak damage and heal yourself.

EarthNight

EarthNight

EarthNight is an absolutely fantastic runner game, where you skydive (spacedive?) though each successive atmosphere, while landing on, running across, and slaying massive dragons. You can tell how much love and passion was poured into this game from every angle.

Every run, you collect pieces of the dragons, which unlock new temporary power-ups when collected for the first time. These power-ups then show up on runs, and you have to collect them to get their temporary effects. You can also use your currency, water, to buy the power-ups early, if you’re finding a dragon too difficult or not fun and just want the power-up. You also collect eggs each run. Every dragon has 3 eggs, each one makes you do more damage against that dragon on that run. Eggs and dragon pieces are also used for upgrading your items and water tank.

Auto-Stunner

Yes. Get it. Or play it on Apple Arcade. This is such an interesting one.

This weirdness. A seven years in the making autorunner from a studio whose founder said of the genre ‘People got bored because it’s boring.’ THAT’S where you need to start when you’re aiming to upend a genre. Also, a title pitched to bring mobile gaming its own Spelunky. You could say it was unpunctual to that aim given the releases we now see on the small screen or, perhaps, just in time for Apple Arcade’s mainstreamification. In any case, what a mission statement; what a millstone of expectation and prospects round a studio’s first game’s neck. How’d it do?

KEEPER- the hunter of insects

Fun game to pass some time. Don’t expect any depth however, but then it’s only 0.99 cents. I have already gotten my moneys worth out of it.

Real player with 0.9 hrs in game

Just barely qualifies as a game

Pros:

  • The “game” starts

  • Did not crash once during playthrough

Cons:

  • No options

  • No auto-reload (have to move your hand from arrow keys to “R” key every time you want to reload)

  • There are only two enemies

  • Upgrades cost way too much and the menu is not intuitive

  • Steam overlay does not work

  • Save locations poorly placed

  • Bad weapon variety

  • No story line, mission or objective

Overall: I’d recommend AGAINST buying this game, as it should not even be on Steam (Yes it’s that terrible). If anything this game only sets the bar lower for other new games.

Story

The underlying story is pretty good, since it shows the pros and cons of being motivated or dismotivated. It also hits close to home with the concept of falling into a spiral of pessimism. The translation is readable and does a decent job of getting everyone’s characterization across, but it still has some errors and is rough compared to a lot of other translated games.

Gameplay

The combat features no item usage and instead relies entirely on skills to maintain HP, MP, and TP. It seems tricky at first, but not having to worry about stockpiling items does significantly remove a lot of anxiety that comes with exploring long dungeons.
