Argus Panoptes

Argus Panoptes

This is a game made by a few talented individuals whose love for Dark Souls shows through the knowledge you gain as you fail across Argus. The concept of constantly needing to improve your understanding of the game and making previous levels seem like a breeze gives a sense of growth and accomplishment that a few other games seem to get right. I feel this game will also create a cult for its speed-running potential as its mechanics are begging people to break the mold and invent new crazy moves for world records.

I have played a few platformer games through the years but i have never pump into anything similar to that game. Argus Panoptes concept is very simple but really fun the same time! The physics of the games are perfect and the tools that offer are simple and fun to use. What i really liked into this game is that even after giving so much effort and spending a lot of time to just beat a level, it made me feel that i could always do better (so i can climb up the leaderboards) and indeed after many tries would feel like i “was dancing” through the level and not struggling. Lastly i would like to say that the music and the art create an atmosphere that fits into the concept ! Great work!

I WAS GIVEN A FREE COPY OF THIS GAME BY THE DEVELOPER

If you’d prefer a video review, have a look here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6n0KUluzXhM

Turnover is a stealth game, and a hardcore one at that. It takes a top down Hotline Miami-esk approach, and rather boldly the game actually lets you straight up see the detection range for pretty much all of your enemies. In many ways it harkens back to old, challenging, stealth games, which has become somewhat of a lost genre, as it feels like you can be stealthy in almost any game now, and many of the games which originally had stealth at their core like Splinter Cell and Thief, have become closer and closer to action games. That’s was what really intrigued me about the game so I requested a pre-release review copy, here are some thoughts from a guy who has never really been into hardcore stealth games.

I really do love stealth games though I understand they can be rather polarizing as they test patience and can be unforgiving. Turnover is a particularly unforgiving game and has pushed my patience with the short amount of time that I have spent with it.

That said, from each death I learn how to better navigate the game as Turnover has very solid and consistent mechanics. Each level takes me a few deaths/runs to understand where to expect encounters and available paths and how to get through, but getting to the end is wonderfully rewarding and I feel like I really deserved it.

System Under Surveillance

System Under Surveillance

PLEASE NOTE: the game is still in development.

System Under Surveillance (SUS) is an upcoming indie stealth game with adventure and puzzle elements, reminiscent of some of the classics of the 80s and 90s. The graphic style is retro with a modern twist, with gameplay taking place in an old-school isometric world, while the story unfolds as an interactive comic book with all illustrations hand-drawn in pixel art!

THE STORY SO FAR:

His only memory is being in a car chase involving his mother, after which, Adam finds himself alone in the middle of a dystopian city, not knowing how he got there. He soon discovers that a mysterious governmental organization is after him, but he has no idea why.

During his struggle to evade the murky forces hunting him down, Adam meets an eccentric cleaning robot. Despite being called TURBO, Adam’s new robot friend is clumsy and slow, albeit with a big (digital) heart. TURBO teams up with Adam in his mission to stay alive and uncover the dark truth surrounding the accident.

IT’S A COMIC BOOK, TOO!:

Get drawn into the game through its carefully illustrated pixel-art comic book. Your progress helps tell the story. Recover the missing pages to piece together the unsettling truth behind the accident and why you’re being followed wherever you go by deadly robots. And the story has only just begun.

STEALTH OR DIE:

In the world of SUS, you have no power over your enemies. You’re completely vulnerable! Without any combat capability, your only chance of surviving is through stealth.

Scan your surroundings and work out how to use them to your advantage. Make the most of each character’s unique abilities to trick your enemies, sneak past them and stay undercover.

SWITCH BETWEEN TWO UNIQUE CHARACTERS, AT ANY TIME!:

TURBO,is a rickety old cleaning robot, but it has some very handy skills! It can:

  • hover above holes to propel itself to new areas;

  • transform into a metallic ball and roll up pipes and down narrow alleys;

  • generate a powerful electric shock by spinning in place, temporarily disabling nearby electronics;

Adam, is a regular boy who is also uncommonly resourceful. He can:

  • remotely take control of enemies, open doors and disable security systems;

  • create diversions with everyday objects;

  • make use of clever gadgets to solve the puzzles in minigames;

  • and more…

NO ORDINARY HEALTH SYSTEM:

SUS replaces the old-school health bar with a threat level. It serves to immerse you even further into the story, bringing you closer to Adam, the ordinary boy whose life depends on outsmarting his enemies. Stay undetected to keep the threat level low, or get detected to make enemies follow you, only to trick them into letting you into restricted areas. The threat level goes back down when you hide. But you can’t stay hidden forever!

Wirewalk()↳

Wirewalk()↳

As an old school (S)NES RPG player I was really pleased to play this game, the gameplay feels like playing Zelda - A Link to the Past, with a Megaman like soundtrack ! The story shows a not so far future where people is even more dependent on technology in a clear criticism to our current society, I won’t do spoilers here but the jokes about this society are clever and made me laugh more than once. I felt like the game was fairly easy (maybe because I’m used to this kind of game) and made me want more, an expansion with more levels/bosses would be great. In a nutshell, entertaining with a nice message to the player.

Disclaimer, for transparency’s sake: the developer is a friend of mine however I’ll be reviewing this game as unbiased as possible.

Wirewalk is a typical Gameboy dungeon crawler adventure game in the molds of the first Zelda titles with a top-down gameplay and retro graphics.

First, the story: It is rather straightforward - you’re a girl named Rada who lives in a town suddenly plagued by a mysterious computer virus that renders technology inoperable. Fortunately, Rada knows her way around computers and has developed a program nicknamed “Wirewalk” in which she’s able to “go inside the code” to fix people’s various devices.

I highly recommend this game if your looking for a good twin stick shooter that won’t take much of your time. From playing the Xbox 360 version to now the Steam I can tell you that this game hold up very well. What makes it better that it is a free experience so if you don’t enjoy it you just have to uninstall. When you get a chance definitely take some time into playing it.

FINALLY. This was easily one of my favorite games back on Xbox Arcade. It’s not that it’s a huge game. To be fair it’s a chaotic mess, but it’s so much fun. The soundtrack meshes perfectly with the gameplay too and was well worth the $1 cover charge the game used to require. Hopefully “I MAED A S0NG W1TH Z0MBIES 1N IT” makes it’s way to Steam soon as well since we can have soundtracks now. The only thing that could make this game better is more of it but for a bite sized 10 minute adventure this one is hands down one of the best.

LONELY, LUSTFUL, ARROGANT, HATEFUL

LONELY, LUSTFUL, ARROGANT, HATEFUL

I’ll have to downvote this because of the LONGNESS of the first two challenges, either you encourage to replay or you make it utterly painful, sheesh.

The characters, the idea and the mystery are pretty decent tho.

Real player with 4.5 hrs in game

The game is a series of puzzles followed by character dialogue until the ending which is something else. Any mistake during the puzzle section is fatal for one character who is then permanently absent for the rest of that playthrough. Every dialogue segment is unique for every combination of surviving characters.

I have mixed feelings about the puzzles. I liked them on my first playthrough, but they do not have any replay value and you will likely have to replay them multiple times to unlock extra story content. My favorite part of the game is the dialogue which feels intriguingly offbeat. I also just love the survival-puzzle game idea which I haven’t seen before.

Decent little puzzler. Nice artworks, unique protagonist and simple but challenging puzzles that make you feel clever for completing. Would’ve liked to see more content here as there were some interesting mechanics that could have been explored further. The story was more than it needed to be for this time of game and I appreciate that. It added some emotion and investment to the time spent playing. At a higher price point it might be hard to recommend but at a little over $5 it’s a couple hours of entertainment that I felt worth it.

Vertiginous Golf

Vertiginous Golf

This game is really pretty cool. It’s a minigolf game with a really cool fantasy-esque atmosphere and neat little contraptions all over. You build up power with swings and can use either a rewind button or a little jet thingie on your ball to move it slightly where you want. At first it seems like rewind is incredibly OP but the game gets fairly challenging and fairly fast. To the point it might even get a bit frustrating to some people. Luckily I was playing it with my girlfriend so I did honestly have a good time watch us both screw up a few times. The game’s got pretty good graphics and a neat art style and is surprisingly not too computer intensive too.

The Good

Vertignious Golf is a gorgeous game, both conceptually and stylistically. The game controls aren’t difficult to grasp, the music and sounds are well designed, and the interface is nice and clean, not interfering with the graphics – did I mention they were gorgeous? Oh, yes, I did.

The hummingbird and rewind features are welcome additions to the basic gameplay of minigolf. In fact, given the complexity of some of the holes, they’re requirements. The availability of a wedge in addition to a putter is welcome, adding a level of strategy absent in other minigolf games.
