The Thought Police Hotline: Episode 1

Developer: Voonle

Publisher: Voonle

Pros:

1. The story does keep its merits as sci-fi with interesting inclusions such as the government taking over privacy and tracking emotions, calls, and other activities. I could see the inspirations if this was inspired by Minority Report or the anime series PSYCHO-PASS, or just the outlook on real life itself.

I mean this is a probably one of the best visual novels ever made…like easily. I think the only visual novel that is better is Seeds of Chaos. If you are going to make a visual novel you have to dedicate considerable time to the story, art direction, and ability for the player to make choices that have an effect on the story. For some reason I don’t understand, almost no visual novels can meet that minimum standard. Untale doesn’t just meet those standards it exceeds them. The amount of different choices you have in this game is quite stunning and it’s clear a ton of work was put into making the outcomes of these choices make logical sense. Even the music here is great, I think they could use more music, but it’s probably the most robust visual novel soundtrack except for probably Lady Killer in a Bind’s amazing jazz score.

The art of the game is good, the story/plot is interessing and the characters are quite interessing.

Why I do not recommend it ? Because playing a “power less” guy that just do is best to survive is frustrating. And the save mechanism really help to keep the frustration very high.. ( please restart from the beginning and remember you choice… such a pain… ).

I also dont like the “combat” behavior ( being able to skip the minigame once done was a good idea… why keeping the combat ? ).

I’m sad because I really find the ambiance good but keeping trying to find the less bad ending is not where I take pleasure to play.

Wraiths of SENTINEL

Wraiths of SENTINEL

A very solid CoG - better than most. I really only have two criticisms for the story:

1. The romance wasn’t handled that well in my opinion. It’s very abrupt, especially with the Sorcerer, and with the limited character exploration of the romance optinos it feels empty.

2. I didn’t like the inclusion of the non-Wraith entities. Magicians, demons, etc. To me it makes the whole thing feel smaller. I get that the author is building a shared universe with MetaHuman Inc. (which is a good game), but… meh

I liked MC’s base wraith superpower, I think it was unique and cool. I don’t think it counts as spoilers since you’re introduced to this power at the very beginning of the game: you can walk through walls and other solid stuff (including people) like a ghost, and you are invisible to the human eyes which makes you the perfect spy. It’s cool to see that MC wonders about the extents of this superpower, like can you somehow pass through earth and so on.

There are a number of major choices (at least it looks like it) and different endings (I’ve explored 2 endings, at least). I felt like most of the choices I’ve made had some effect at later stages of the game which is good.

You VS Drugs

You VS Drugs

YOU TAKE ON THE ROLE OF REAL-LIFE AGENTS WHO EXIST IN YOUR BRAIN, WHERE YOUR OWN WIT CAN RISE TO REVERT A WORLDWIDE DEVASTATION. THE ENEMY CAN ENSLAVE ANYONE, ANYWHERE. BY EMBARKING ON AN ADVENTURE THAT WILL DEFY YOUR IMAGINATION, YOU WILL DISCOVER HOW DRUG ADDICTION THREATENS HUMANITY. BY WATCHING REAL NEUROLOGICAL EVENTS, YOU WILL BE EMPOWERED TO BETTER PROTECT YOURSELF, AND THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE —IF YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES!

Inspiration & theme: “In 1960, only 4 million Americans had ever tried drugs” (2.2% of people). “By creating the Bureau of Narcotics & Dangerous Drugs in 1968, the U.S. set the basis of an official national/international war on drugs” (Drug Enforcement Administration Museum).

50 years later, the National Survey on Drug Use & Health (2019) showed that 164.8 million Americans aged 12 or older (60.1% of people) were past month substance users. Even worse, “children are already abusing drugs at age 12 or 13 (…), including tobacco, alcohol, inhalants, marijuana, prescription drugs such as sleeping pills & anti-anxiety medicines” (National Institute on Drug Abuse -NIDA-, 2020). And now, the United Nations’ 2021 World Drug Report states that “pandemic effects ramp up drug risk, as youth underestimate cannabis dangers”. So, what now? NIDA (2020) states that “Increased understanding of the basics of addiction will empower people to make informed choices in their own lives”. But if science took +100 years to unravel how drugs change the brain and produce addiction, how can regular kids & adults learn such complex topics to foresee the hidden dangers of trying drugs?

‘You VS Drugs’ is the first brain-based video game saga in the world designed to prevent drug addiction by empowering people with real knowledge, so they can make better choices in their own lives!

Design & gameplay: It’s a chibi cartoon-style 3D graphic design of characters & settings which give players a sense of action and fun at first glance. Friends & foes, level challenges, sounds, structures & objects are designed for players —that can play alone/with a partner— to explore, have fun, get surprised, fight, and make decisions that test the knowledge players acquire while watching how their brain works, and how drugs mess up with people’s lives. All relevant situations are inspired in real events of the working brain.

Game mechanics (and link to the learning experience):

• Incorrect responses to Path questions lead to situations that diminish energy levels.

• Correct responses to Path questions earn players points. Enough points allow the discovery of a special feature in the camp’s hospital.

• Your choices sometimes affect other AI teammates’ energy levels.

• To complete the first half of a level you need to take care of your fellow(s).

• Once a level is completed, the subsequent level is unlocked.

• Before a new level starts, weapon improvements or new skills can be learned at the camp’s gym.

The idea is very nice and one can tell the effort it has been put on it, cool atmosphere.

But frankly, this game has no more than 40 minutes gameplay, it cannot be sold for the price it has. It is quite sad. It would be better to bundle it with other games. Or maybe I missed something?

Phantasma VR

Hello Everyone, I just finished this game.

I am glad I finished, If this was a Hard copy of a game I would of put it in a bucket of Gas, and set it a fire.

This was one of the most Aggravating games I have ever played on VR. If I didn’t pay so much for my vive, I would of smashed my Controllers into a wall a long time ago. Not only did I want to get to the next Head banging puzzle so badly, just to stop me from slamming my Headset into the walls, but I wanted to get to the end, to find out what kind of reward I would be greeted with since I went through all of this Madness. There was none, None end line story finish, no what is going to happen to me, NOTHING!!! it just ends…… I am searching for a highlight of my day into the night, back to the day Aggro blast, the only thing I can come up with is standing in front of the hall door listening to the couple Screwing.

I have decided to completley re write my review of Phantasma. when I first played this game I really wanted to love it but to be honest , and this is hard for me to say because I pride myself on my puzzle solving ability and proudly wear the “I solved obduction without cheating” badge. but before some updates and reworking this game had me beyond frustrated. The dev has completely reworked the second puzzle,. the infamous Paris and added a few clever hints in a couple of the other levels now that make this game much more accessible. The puzzles will still challenge you. But every thing you need to solve the puzzles are right there in front of you. you will solve and when you do you will feel pretty damn smart for it. Graphically the game is gorgeous. the sound is great and free locomotion works fantastic. Currently the dev is working on an update to fix the teleport from pushing players back from the edge of tables and the like. That’s another thing. This dev is listening to his customers and has been working like a madman to give us updates and fix anything that may have been over looked in playtesting. You should easily be playing the game for 3 to 5 hours depending on your puzzle logic,. I initially didn’t think there was any replay value but have found myself going through again and just absorbing the atmosphere of the game and feeling the narative. It’s really twisted. this is definitely worth your time and money! we need more interesting titles like this and less wave shooters.

A pretty good school project point and click having to open the menu choose the correct interaction close the menu testing what option you need when the options aren’t really explained outside of a picture makes the game pretty clunky, until you get used to it a lot of the options only have one or two uses anyways having a system where you click an item and it just gives you the option needed when the time comes for that item’s interaction might have been better than having to open and close a menu not a big problem but since there’s quite a few objects it gets redundant. The story is pretty decent nothing crazy, but I like the fact you get a genocide mode or a pacifist mode sadly the ending doesn’t change regardless.

I played twice with it.

So for those who insist this part of the review included, up, left, right down arrows Enter and ESC controls and there you have it good.

The dev there got out of the classical soft 2D look toward a more 3D cold aesthetic where he both had more control and ownership of his characters and action. Since what happens globally, I guess it was his best bet to narrate a very complex story that casts an interesting foreshadowing into the future of our freedom, privacy and how much a government can use external events to their advantage to lock down a society and turn politics into plain accepted tyranny. It does into the same charms of the Incitement series, City of Chains and Outrage but in the Pegasus-5 mature universe. You got to check upon the morale of your crew members and have the option to romance most of them very inclusively, but without artificially changing them into your own likings and orientations, which makes them pretty realistic in the versimilitude of the game universe.
