AT SUNDOWN: Shots in the Dark

AT SUNDOWN: Shots in the Dark

Disclaimer: I played this game a lot during the PC beta (free invite from devs), and just got it for my Switch today (paid myself). On to the review…

Ok so you’ll definitely have fun playing this game with your friends/family, it’s really simple to pick up and have fun with different weapons. If you like Towerfall or Gang Beasts this is similar but with more variety/replayability. You’ll want to own some controllers if you want to play local through steam.

But this game really gets good once you get past the intial learning and get into the M I N D G A M E S. I love playing a unpredictable mix of stealth and speed. Your opponent gets scared that you are sneaking right next to them so they shoot blindly giving away their position. Then when they drop their guard, you rush right at them.

Played the demo of this game at WTFox 2 in 2016, and I loved it. I waited years for it to finally come out, and when it did I bought it immediately. I think the game in its current state is fun, but it’s hard to recommend a game like this with a nonexistent playerbase. Fun for some living room multiplayer, but not much else

Do not be fooled by the steam store page, this game has fully implemented online play through the steam system. I bought it for it’s gameplay, and still enjoy it for that and it’s well done online laddering.

Not only are the controls solidly simple, but they also allow for quite a few physics based trickes to be pulled off. This results in gameplay that rarely gets dull and allows the player’s playstyle to clearly show in multiplayer matches.

This game is absolutely fantastic. After a while of searching for a multiplayer, fast-paced action game for a great price I came to this gem. The gameplay is fast but responsive and skillful, there isn’t a moment where you feel cheated by the controls. There’s not a flaw in this game and you could easily kill hours playing this. Would recommend.

It’s also a perfect price to gift a friend after you learn the skills then kick their butt.. until they get better than you xD

BATTLECREW™ Space Pirates

BATTLECREW™ Space Pirates

BATTLECREW Space Pirates is a free-to-play multiplayer combat game that takes place in 2D pinball-like arenas. The game’s most glaring flaw is the paltry amount of content that it offers. There are only two game modes and four character classes, enough for an afternoon of fun before gameplay turns stale and moldy. Players who purchase the Unlimited DLC can play as many games as they’d like, while everyone else is given ten credits a day. Those credits can be exchanged for a single game. It’s a free-to-play strategy that discourages regular play and—spoiler alert for BATTLECREW Space Pirates’s Steam reviews—doesn’t jive with players.

The game itself is good, fun and graphically impressive. Some wierd restrictions and limitations imposed isn’t doing the devs any favours. Stuff like team deathmatch is only 2v2, that’s it. Not 1v1, not 3v3 etc. Gold Rush mode is always and only 4v4. They have 10 maps but decided not to make smaller and larger maps. You can only play 10 times a day then need to rely on token donations from paying members. Serious lack of players and marketing, it’s hard to find humans to play with. Selling tokens to play more than 10 matches is pretty disgusting, and a formula taken from mobile games which is the reason I don’t play mobile games. Really disappointing, especially from the devs who made Blue Estate.

Super Squad

Super Squad

I started playing this game in closed beta, I was super fortunate that they reached out to me as a small streamer, I got involved and have been able to watch the progress done throughout the last year and I can honestly say this game rocks! The dev team is super active within the community and constantly working on taking in suggestions and working on improvements. If you haven’t downloaded yet, do it now. Get in while everyone still sucks at the game and you can be a pro in no time. I guarantee a year from now everyone is gonna be really good so watch out!

Super Squad is a fun little game that once you get the hang of it there are hours of of fun to be had. If you are solo or want to play with friend’s this really could be the game for you. The dev’s are active friendly an have a very friendly discord community. To play a non toxic team v team game is a nice change. at almost 100 hours play time i can say i have enjoyed it. Super Squad has a learning curve at first but push on once you get the hang of it great time’s can be had well done BadFox. I never said IT IS FREE meaning there is no reason not to check it out.

Swarm Universe

Swarm Universe

In one word, this game is “Perfection”. You’re like a swarm of angry bees.

Pros:

  • Simple to learn, hard to master

  • Runs smoothly considering you know what you’re doing

  • Modding = Infinite possibilities

  • The story is hilariously rushed but funny

Cons:

  • The serious modding is BRUTAL.

  • Did I mention how much I hate the Scorpions and Penta-Turrets?

! The early levels are a bit lewd at first glance, because the first enemies look like sperm, and you are a swarm “egg”.

I didn’t know what to expect when a friend recommended this game to me.

Now I’m enthusiastic. Maybe because of the funny guide through the game or the music that drags you into this challenge. The drone-thing is a nice idea by the way. There is so much to improove and discover…. gotta go back to the swarm universe!

Wasteland Angel

Wasteland Angel

This game somehow reminds me of the mid-90s sci-fi flick Tank Girl, but maybe the similarity begins and ends with the post-apocalyptic setting, the cartoonish art style and the main characters, both girls whose favourite activity seems to be shooting mutants. You take on the role of Angel, who drives around in her car and saves the inhabitants of post-world war III settlements from mutant attacks. So much for the backstory.

Gameplay wise, Wasteland Angel is a no-nonsense top-down shooter. You’re looking at a desert landscape from an isomotric perspective, drive around with a car whilst shooting at other cars that likewise shoot at you. That’s pretty much all there is. Your main armament consists of two fixed guns, additional weapons can be aquired by driving over power-ups. Each level has three stages and, after you defeat the stages final boss in the third, a short bonus stage that leaves the top-down view and switches to a first-person perspective. The game never breaks from this pattern.

Honestly, this game is exactly what it presents itself as - a fast-paced, post-apocalyptic arcade-style game focused around vehicular combat. Within that mold, there’s some aspects I appreciate quite a lot.

  1. Civilian towns. The primary objective is not just to survive against all comers, but to protect towns full of civilians - this often, at least for me - created situations where I had no choice but to hold off on blowing up targets trying very hard to kill me in order to protect civilians. This particular feature just seems very well designed - you’ve got enough heallth to sacrifice some if you have to in order to protect civilians, the game smoothly increases complexity from one town on a flat map to multiple towns on a map covered in impassable terrain obstacles, etc. If a bunch of civies are walking back to town after the transport which took them is exploded and you or an enemy runs them over, they die, etc. It’s little things like that which make a good game a great one or a bad game okay.

TimeTekker

TimeTekker

TimeTekker is a fun little (fixed-screen) arcade-style bullet-hell arena-survival game in which you play as a Space Ninja who has the ability to deflect enemy projectiles and slow down time.

The game has absolutely no story, whatsoever, and that is reflective of its arcade game nature. It is a game meant for the player to jump in and play, no questions asked.

Really love this game so far, it hits that perfect difficulty level for me as a 27 year old gamer. It’s more about brains then reflexes in otherwords!

The game seems hard at first, but as you get better Merciless becomes the perfect amount of Difficulty for extended play. (start out on easy/brutal until you get used to it)

In a nutshell, Timetekker has simple yet satisfying gameplay. Shoot, dodge, slow down time. On a deeper level you will need to be learning new strategies to make it onto the top of the leaderboard, ie. moving after shooting since time resumes after firing.

Astervoid 2000

Astervoid 2000

Awesome local multiplayer party game! Up to 4 players can blast each other in this game that borrows a little bit from the arcade classic Asteroids but has a lot more to offer with its various power-ups. The graphics are very well done but the system requirements are still relatively low so it should work well on a variety of machines. If you like top down shooters and want to share the fun with friends, this is a great title to pick up and play.

If I could leave stars, I’d give this one 10 out of 10. It perfectly captures the atmosphere it intended, soundtrack rocks, and the controls are fluid and smooth.

It adds special nostalgia for me as I used to play titles like this with my roomates in my early years.

The hard part with a game like this, is the screenshots really don’t do it justice. I loved the animation and effects throughout, and felt it perfectly captured that old school feel while giving it a nice upgrade “in the right places”. The sound and music match and feel right to me.

Also, the mechanics are tight, the numbers are fun and most stat boosts are kept small. Some really fun items, like the worm necklace and the one that inverts the colors, and the one that zooms you out, make the game brand new to play with when you pick them up.

Great game to play with friends. Race to beat the bosses mode and team statues mode are the best in my opinion. In the bosses mode you try to level up to 30 as fast as possible, get the coloured door key and fight the boss. Kill all the bosses and you become the arena god. In statues mode your team has to kill a statue to convert it to your team (the statues fight back against the opposing team). Capture all of the statues to win the game.

For a free game it has a great amount of content. I bought the full game and it’s worth it just for the BEEshop character. There is a lot of good character variety and it’s very satisfying driving away in your clown car or jamming on your guitar shooting music notes at somebody. Make sure you try all of the characters.
