Blake: The Visual Novel

Blake: The Visual Novel

Blake: The Visual Novel is the first VN I have played in a very long time, and I enjoyed it. To be fair it does start off pretty slow, but past the necessary introductions to everyone, and once the plot really begins, there is a lot to like!

The music is real cool and jazzy! I found myself really digging the ambient music in the ICC building! The characters are likable except for maybe Lee. Other than that the story that the game builds up in an intriguing one and the twist caught me by surprise!

I’ll be entirely honest that when I started this one I really wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy it. I am not really a huge fan of visual novels, and the game took a little while to hook me, but after getting in a little deeper, I found myself increasingly intrigued by the story. The game reminded me of games like Yesterday and The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker in terms of writing and characters. Overall I’m glad I played it, and I look forward to seeing what Ori Mees makes in the future.

Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller

Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller

When I started playing Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller in 2016 the game’s unusually brutal and violent nature caught me unaware and scared me away (the fact that the pace of the game slowed down after the opening events was also one of the reasons why I stopped playing it). When giving it a second chance more than 2 years later, I was positively disappointed. After having finished it I must say this is the goriest adventure game I have ever seen - many characters ended up getting killed/mutilated by the time the credits started to roll. This unexpectedly serious tone of course has nothing (or at least little) to do with Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller being a great point and click adventure game, if we can overlook some of its shortcomings (and the base concept of the use of psychic abilities).

Introduction

When I first encountered Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller, it was in a bundle -It looked interesting but I put it on the back burner since I was busy with other games. Fast forward a few years, I asked my friends on Steam what game I should play as a break from my usual things, and this title came up. After looking into I realized this seemed like a great idea! I had not played a point-and-click adventure game in a while, the other reviews seemed positive and it was recommended by friends as well. Drawn in by the comic book art style and the opportunity to play a female protagonist I booted the game up and instantly became addicted. This title offers a solid story, good gameplay and hours of fun for any gamer.

Ghost in the pool

Ghost in the pool

For a short horror VN, the game was pretty decent. I did enjoy reading the story, which was pretty straight forward and to the point for the most part. There were some bits that I was a bit confused by even though I could probably connect the dots (

! specifically talking about the cat…). There are three different endings, which I do like the variety. I also do like the route map and that different choices did slightly change a few things (though the endings themselves do not change). The graphics were great and I loved the sounds.

CASCHA games is a solo developer from China working on two visual novels; Ghost in The Pool (GiTP) and in-development Sunset Paradise. GiTP is a joint effort with author and comic illustrator JOEY, to bring the latter’s horror works to life in a new medium. Due to a language barrier, sadly I cannot (though I’m Chinese) read nor check out the comics. However, I was hooked into this game because the title reminded me of a widely debated mystery in my hometown.

Truly a hidden gem :)

The store page makes it look a bit bland and cheap, but it’s actually a quality VN.

It’s not just a “Click Next”-VN, but you have to focus on what’s happening.

The story is pretty good and I would recommend to play it on “Master Detective”-Mode to get all the interesting mini-games wich are well done :)

The VN also has multiple endings, depending on your choices and after unlocking them you can get the true ending(s?).

Unfortunately I have to say that I felt that the VN could have been better with less endings, since you are forced to do them to unlock the final ones. Even with the skip function it takes a bit of time for a playthrough since you still have to navigate through the rooms, etc. So it felt kind of tedious after a while and it didn’t feel like the endings offered something surprisingly new for me.

Note: not for all! It’s not an easy reading nextnextskipskip VN, you should have a sense of logic, pay attention to details and words.

I’m not sure about a genre, but it’s mostly Visual Novel. But you should pay attention for all (that’s what for 3 big arrows on the screen — for a little bit exploring and for deeper immersion); otherwise you’ll get stuck with logic minigames, delete the game in frustration and will never know how great the game is. So, the phrase “the gameplay consists of logic and reading comprehension puzzles” is completely true, and you can’t go on to the next part by pressing “skip”.
