Vacancy Unlimited

Vacancy Unlimited

I’ve enjoyed what I’ve played so far. Vacancy Unlimited is made in the Unity engine, and as of day one of launch, is still in a rather primitive state, with a fair amount of placeholder art and missing some sound effects - as expected of an early access title.

The soundtrack is enjoyable to listen to, reminds me of Duke Nukem 2 and Wrack. The gameplay has a nice balance of relaxing as you search for weapons and ammo before the frantic hordes come upon you (usually in tight spaces) just before the end of the level. Rounding a corner before being ambushed by several gun-wielding enemies usually means your death, leading these engagements to be the most tense.

This is a fun game, but a hard game. You’ll find yourself pleasantly challenged and enjoying this fantastic old school/new school blend of FPS.

Developer needs to include a damage locator to let us know where the enemy is shooting us or hitting us from though. Without it, the game’s difficulty is brutal. I’m eager to see a more refined version of it. I’m also going to check out the dev’s earlier work.

There is A LOT I want to say on this game, to just go ahead with the TLDR in the beginning: Yes, I recommend it, yes it is not the best “Marvel” IP based game but it is a good game for what it is and what it is trying to do. For a more detailed, honest and fair review that isn’t being a sheep because “Its cool to hate on this game xdddd” please refer below to the positives, the negatives and the more. I have over 400+ hours on this game and I plan on adding more so I’d like to say I’m a veteran and so do my friends as I see their reviews here too.

I don’t know what everyone else was expecting, but I enjoyed everything I got.

The SP campaign told an interesting story that kept me wanting to play to see what happened next.

The combat system is very entertaining. It can be picked up quickly for it’s simple components, but, for anyone who really wants to master it, it actually has a lot of depth to it.

Each character added has been free and added another short narrative to the game world along with a new hero to play.

Each hero feels unique to play in combat despite being familiar enough to move from one to the other with relative ease. Even after adding Kate Bishop and Hawkeye, two archers, back to back, each character feels wholly unique and nothing like the other.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar

Battle Chasers: Nightwar

TLDR: If you are a fan of turn-based RPGs, especially those from the golden age of PSX/PS2, this is right up your alley. The polish is top-notch and there are very few games made like this nowadays. This is certainly worth your time and money.

Originally I planned to write this after I poured a few more hours into the game, but given the price for the summer sale I wanted to get this out for people who might be wondering if they should buy it. In short, please do.

Games like Battle Chasers: Nightwar are rare these days, a game so supremely polished, addicting, and engrossing that it’s hard to put down. This game is a straight up love letter to folks like myself, the late twenties/early thirties crowd who grew up playing some of the PSX era giants. I’m not just talking about the Final Fantasy games, but some of the lesser known gems like Lunar, Thousand Arms, Grandia, and Vandal Hearts. Nothing against the JRPG titles in the genre (I have played many) but it’s also really cool to see something with this sort of vibrant “western” art style that just pops out of the screen like the comic book off which it’s based. It really is a joy to look at and it never gets old watching the animations on screen.

“Compelling comic Turn-based RPG throwback with fresh mechanics and experience”

This analysis is based on latest version which tweaks some issues. So you might expect different criticism from early review or if you’re uncomfortable with the length, you can skip to other brief review.

Presentation

BC: Nightwar is turn-based RPG game from Kickstarter campaign in 2015. Developed by Airship Syndicate using Unity engine. The game represents world of ’90 Joe Madureira’s comic with refreshed JRPG turn-based combat and interesting features. The design is diverse from the comic dialogue and 2D multi-layered world map, shifted into isometric view in dungeon and fully-animated turn based section. It’s subjective design if you enjoy arcanepunk, but well-polished production.

Touhou Double Focus

It’s a fun metroidvania game. However, there’s nothing really new here : you explore areas, find items defeat enemies and bosses. The one interesting mechanic is its portal system where you can lay down some portals almost anywhere for fast travelling. You have a set amount of portals you can use and you can only save in the main area so putting portals requires some thought. Also the character switching mechanic is fun to use but it doesn’t really make anything unique.

Despite being a short game to complete, it has a LOT of charm put into it. The overall presentation is superb. There’s a surprising amount of touhou characters and references you can find. There is an incentive to explore and find everything in this game.

Truly a Dark Souls of Touhou games. On a serious note, that is pretty much a 2D Souls like about greatest Tengu duet! Basicaly you controling Aya and Momiji, Aya is fast, can evade and has ranged attacks: Momiji is strong, has a shield to block attacks and can RUN (including wall running). Other than that it’s your typical metroidvania-souls like game. Buy! Aquastyle makes great games, and this one is not an exception,

its okay at best. Controls are defaulted to a weird setting instead of the normal WASD movement hence why one reviewer said u could only move right and down. Dude probably didnt know you could change keyboard controls. bruh moment. (options were also in french for some reason). But one you fix the controls, it does run “better”. That said, there are still a few bugs. and once you run out of ammo, thats basically it for you (so you better pray for some ammo drops). For the price, its alright. enjoyable until you get tired of the repetition.

Real player with 7.9 hrs in game

Its….. alright.

If you want to play the game you have to fix the key bindings from SDXC back to WASD. The recoil on all the weapons just slowly move the camera to the right, hopefully this gets fixed to something a bit less obnoxious, like a wider area of damage instead, or just a wider accuracy range. For some reason the PISTOL deals more damage than the SHOTGUN when you deliver a point blank HEADSHOT to the enemies. This straight up weird having a shotgun require two shots to the head while a pistol only ever requires one headshot. The SHOTGUN doesn’t act like a shotgun, when you fire it at enemies it just acts like a weak pistol, only having its shot being registered by the enemy inline with your sight, zero spread shot. You can’t move backwards while firing your weapon, which is a little annoying as you have to crab walk everywhere when attacking the waves. When reloading the shotgun it will signify that you’ve loaded in a couple shells, but if you try and pull the trigger early thinking you’ve a least loaded 1 shell the reload process cancels, leaving you with an empty shotgun. This is a bit of a drawback because it feels like you should at least be able to fire off the shells that have been loaded in the reload sound. If you like detailed maps…… the TREES FLOAT above the ground. The map has 2 holes that lead to the outside of the giant crater. You can walk outside the crater and just tour around the outside for all eternity if you want, just beware that if you fall off the map you’re just stuck with a brown screen until you quit. The menu itself has a few bugs in it, one being once you enter into the settings you can’t jump to any other tab except the play tab. The pleasure mode side menu wont close no matter what, even if you press the CLOSE button, it wont close. If you try and pick up a ammunition box in Endless mode it will only refill the ammunition of the weapon you’re CURRENTLY on, so just take note of that if you’re trying to survive and not run out of bullets. The Normal game mode has 3 little areas where you can just jump on either a crate or a green storage unit and just pick off all the waves without any effort, so if you want to lazily pass the levels this technique works. If you get any of the enemies in Normal mode to stand near the green storage unit though there is a chance where they become untouchable no matter what, even if you’re firing at them from anywhere else on the map, their hit boxes just don’t register the shots. And last little problem I’ve found is that I couldn’t find the last GOLDEN UNICORN on Endless mode no matter what, I’ve searched the entire inside and outside of the map for two and a half hours and still couldn’t find it. If you’re trying to 100% the achievements on this game…… good luck. This review has been made when the game essentially just released so I’m hoping the developers look into these bugs. This game is only ~$2 so I guess some flaws are to be expected.

Tons of bugs still, I understand that it’s still alpha but there are a lot of game breaking bugs. It’s taking the devs a long time to even acknowledge the bugs. Every time they fix one bug they create another.

It has potential as game but I wouldn’t recommend playing until they fix quite a bit of it
