SpellPunk VR

SpellPunk VR

I am not into writing reviews but I think that SpellPunk is underestimated, that is why I decided to say something about it. I truly enjoy this game. It is hard to find a good spellcasting vr game with beautiful graphics, working controls and entertaining gameplay. SpellPunk has all of these. The game is super immersive. I truly admire that its developers have gone the extra mile giving us the possibility to play with a full-body avatar instead of the usual flying hands. This feature makes me feel like I am a pure-blood magician. I can’t find the words to explain the feeling of winning a magical duel after successfully casting your spells. I feel even more powerful than a Harry Potter wizard, because I don’t even need a wand. How amazing is this?

TLDR; Worth supporting, but a long way to go.

This game is a work in progress, there are definitely some wrinkles that need to be ironed out. Having said that, there is a lot of charm to the concept of core gameplay. I feel like there’s a lot of potential and while you may not love the game now, it could grow into something special with support. There are a lot of problems that I will lay out so while I am giving it my recommendation, it’s current state may not satisfy you. Here we go.

_Nina lives in a dusty town, haunted by the six angry wolves of the week - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Each day brings never-ending chores, and no one can rest until they are done.

Legend speaks of a seventh, kinder wolf, but everybody knows an evil witch stole it and keeps it locked away. But Nina has had enough, so she sets on an ambitious quest - go to the forgotten realms, vanquish the witch, bring back Sunday and enough free time for everyone._

The Lost Sunday is a comic book about working too much, told through stories and inspiration from old folklore, myths and tales. We printed this book in English, Swedish,. Romanian and French, and Lost Sunday Comics features the digital version of Nina’s heart-warming adventures.

**Played on the HTC Vive Cosmos Elite with Index controllers [/b}

Graphics are not bad for a free to play game. It clean and sharp. It’s colourful. No ray tracing or gorgeous lighting effects so don’t expect much.

Audio sounds great, but some of it is missing. An example is there are no crossbow sounds.

The gameplay is repetitive very quickly. A good amount of levels to enjoy. You have a knife and a crossbow. Your goal is to make it out the other end of this dungeon crawler.**

Experienced on the Oculus Rift

I guess you could call this a dungeon crawler … if you’re being generous. It plays just like a wave shooter (with set pieces though), where you can use the saddest crossbow or a knife. You select one of 10 levels (once you beat a level the next one unlocks). You get stars … for your score killing & breaking everything). Teleport is the only locomotion, there is no snap or smooth turning.

This game is so bad that I won’t even do a video review for it or a Steam Curator review. I’d hate to bring this curse upon my channel. The only good thing I can say about the game is that I didn’t experience any bugs and it seemed to be running smoothly. Everything else was horrible.

Teodoro and the Evil Machines

Teodoro and the Evil Machines

WHAT IS TEODORO AND THE EVIL MACHINES?

It is an action shoot-em-up, shmup “or schump” type game but with a visual style, history and difficulty adapted for kids with these features:

EASY MODE: Any inexperienced player will be able to finish the game and learn all his mechanics well, allowing him to improve by removing frustration.

MULTIPLAYER COOPERATIVE GAME : Two players can share the same game at the same time, helping each other.

History

TEODORO’s home lived in peace, tranquility and harmony in a perfect balance using the magic and vital energy that emanated from that land.

But one day a door opened from which some very aggressive monsters emerged with horrendous machines that destroyed everything. They installed gadgets to take the vital energy of everything that lived to feed their machines of war and to go to other worlds to continue with their pillages.

TEODORO returned from his adventure and saw all that: “Help us Teodoro” said the sages, “You are the only one who can save the universe from these monsters”.

But TEODORO needs your help! Do you dare to try it?

Game modes

EASY MODE: Designed 100% for inexperienced players to remove frustration and allow training reflexes and abilities.

MIDDLE MODE: Access to all screens in the game on a slightly more difficult difficulty than the simplest mode.

HARD MODE: For more experienced players designed as a more difficult challenge.

Cooperative play

TEODORO AND THE EVIL MACHINES allows you to play in simultaneous multiplayer cooperative mode with another friendly character: GOMINOLO.

Phases of the horizontal and vertical type with changes in gameplay:

Jiangshi x Daoshi

Jiangshi x Daoshi

I absolutely love this game! It uses a refreshing mix of static avatars & backgrounds, with frequent animation and motion comic action panels reminiscent of Dead Leaves. This gives the game an extremely dynamic feel, which makes up for the lack of choices. Like many Visual Novels, heavy emphasis is on the word Novel, as such, interaction in this game is mostly limited to hunting for words that the in-game hover-dictionary may explain for you.

Jiangshi X Daoshi boasts a rich story packed with fantastic Chinese mythology/historical information, with a wholesome dynamic between the main characters.

Please be mindful that this is the censored version uploaded to steam.

I wish to bring awareness to this. Apparently this VN was banned upon submission because of certain scenes and they’ve fought tooth and nail the bring it back for us to enjoy. Bans usually mean end of the line for most games from what I have heard. I’ve went back in to check most of these scenes and they aren’t even close to becoming questionable. Battle Chasers: Nightwar

Battle Chasers: Nightwar

TLDR: If you are a fan of turn-based RPGs, especially those from the golden age of PSX/PS2, this is right up your alley. The polish is top-notch and there are very few games made like this nowadays. This is certainly worth your time and money.

Originally I planned to write this after I poured a few more hours into the game, but given the price for the summer sale I wanted to get this out for people who might be wondering if they should buy it. In short, please do.

Games like Battle Chasers: Nightwar are rare these days, a game so supremely polished, addicting, and engrossing that it’s hard to put down. This game is a straight up love letter to folks like myself, the late twenties/early thirties crowd who grew up playing some of the PSX era giants. I’m not just talking about the Final Fantasy games, but some of the lesser known gems like Lunar, Thousand Arms, Grandia, and Vandal Hearts. Nothing against the JRPG titles in the genre (I have played many) but it’s also really cool to see something with this sort of vibrant “western” art style that just pops out of the screen like the comic book off which it’s based. It really is a joy to look at and it never gets old watching the animations on screen.

“Compelling comic Turn-based RPG throwback with fresh mechanics and experience”

This analysis is based on latest version which tweaks some issues. So you might expect different criticism from early review or if you’re uncomfortable with the length, you can skip to other brief review.

Presentation

BC: Nightwar is turn-based RPG game from Kickstarter campaign in 2015. Developed by Airship Syndicate using Unity engine. The game represents world of ’90 Joe Madureira’s comic with refreshed JRPG turn-based combat and interesting features. The design is diverse from the comic dialogue and 2D multi-layered world map, shifted into isometric view in dungeon and fully-animated turn based section. It’s subjective design if you enjoy arcanepunk, but well-polished production.

Mines & Dragons

Mines & Dragons

A rather simple game, Mines & Dragons premise is solid enough but not a whole lot of polish went into it. The game is based off minesweeper but their is no option to seemingly plant a marker where you think mines are and clicking on the board wasn’t all that interesting (hope to find those big open spaces with no mines around them, blanket tiles around any 1’s you see, and you’ll do quite well).

I managed to beat a run of the game in under 15 minutes and can’t really say I’m all that inclined to go into another run. The enemies that are fought might have progressively more health but they don’t really do anything interesting. Weapon selection seems to favor heavy hitting items as even though they reduce your time limit they ultimately will let you melt bosses faster.
