Almost My Floor

Almost My Floor

I have some issues with how the game handles the narrative and the atmosphere, but let me start with the positives. The first thing I noticed is the hotspot indicator, double-tap for running, and a flexible save system, so at least it has that going for it. I had a few random glitches here and there, but in general, it feels like the developer put a decent amount of work into the UI. While you play through the story, you can choose to save or kill certain characters, so it has a good reason to replay it. It’s not very long, maybe 2 to 3 hours, but you can hunt for some achievements as well. I thought the game was animated really well, the only thing that I don’t like is that all the monsters are just too cute ;0. Now that brings me to some of the problems with the atmosphere, I think the mood in the game is all over the place, and for the entire playthrough, I was not sure what direction the devs tried to take - is it an intentionally funny game, or is it a horror game that fails to be one (and to me, it felt like both). Perhaps the writer just didn’t convey the mood to me that he wanted, and because of that, I was not entirely sure how to feel.

I think this game has potential. In its current state it’s quite buggy and the English translation is far from good. I would not say this is all that much like the game Chinese Parents and when you run out of vitality it’s instant game over (you can restart from a previous save if you remembered to do so).

Only real issue I ran into was a bug where I couldn’t leave my room after taking the rather long college exam introduction and getting over 600. Could not click the door to leave no matter what after clicking all the little tutorial icons and such. The company has a gameplan so I would like to see what’s to come.

Half-Life: A Place in the West

Half-Life: A Place in the West

There’s a logic in Hollywood that video games can make good movies, despite the fact that few if any films actually bear this notion out (and believe me, I’m being kind by saying “few”). Similarly, it’s questionable to what degree a video game is liable to translate into the medium of comics.

Theoretically, probably a little BETTER than movies…but I’m still not quite convinced. A good “story” in a video game is a completely different thing to a good story in either film or literature, and a video game’s notion of “character” is more often than not a good-looking and functional avatar designed to move the “plot” forward, and give the player an adequate excuse to kill things or solve puzzles. I’m sorry, but Leon from the Resident Evil franchise ISN’T a “character”, boys and girls. He’s a floppy fringe with a gun, and a libido sufficient to make him willing to rescue cute young girls on the back of his speeding jet-ski. You want character, try Taxi Driver (it’s an “old” movie from the 70s, look it up).

Half-Life: A Place in the West teases the Half-Life fans by delivering a very compelling story based on the Half-Life universe, presented as a fan-made digital comic featuring a total of 13 chapters which are planned to be released over several years. By the time of writing this review, 5 of them are available on the Steam store (the first one being free).

Even if the comic uses the Half-Life setting, its story follows a completely new path, unrelated to the characters featured in the series so that it’s not centered on Gordon Freeman’s adventures. I haven’t played any of the Half-Life titles, yet I greatly enjoyed reading the comic which didn’t require any prior knowledge about the franchise. The few intro pages describe this setting very well and the info provided is enough to get you started: at Black Mesa Research Facility, scientists discover a new alien life form and while attempting to analyze it, they accidentally cause a dimensional rift to open; as a consequence, Earth becomes exposed to an alien invasion. Seven hours later, the extra-terrestrial race known as the “Combine” conquers the planet entirely and kills most of humanity. Gigantic towers, called “Citadels” are sent out by the Combine to the major cities of the Earth, in order to enforce their will on the remaining living people.

Perseverance: Part 1

This game may start off slow, but the story is AMAZING! I love the “painted” graphics style and the way the Dev’s created atmosphere is phenomenal. No Spoilers here, just looking forward to the 2nd part to see what happens next.

The way it is done is reminiscent of the Telltale series but I personally found the story to be very well written, and even though the choices are limited they still feel like they make a massive impact … 10 out of 10 would do again!

A fairly promising start to an episodic visual novel, which, as I expect, will evolve into some kind of postapocalyptic survival story. Here, were introduced to the protagonist, Jack, with his struggling family and unfulfilling life in a backwater American town, kept afloat only by the close proximity to a military base. We mostly learn about his story and his relations with his wife and daughter - but while after a harsh argument he secludes himself in a forest cabin inherited from his father, a chain of events happens in his hometown that will most likely change the world forever.

Stilstand

Stilstand

This game hit home for me and those watching the stream. I loved the art style and how it captured the emotions. The game itself does not have any puzzles but is a point and click adventure with guides. The music, the dialog, the sass from our conscience? monster, and the over all humor of the game mixed with the depression/ loneliness is my kind of humor. You really understand the character and root for her because shes just trying to be happy but makes many mistakes along the way. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes dark stories about the mind and humanity.

I love this game. Stilstand is one of the only visual novels I could really get into and appreciate to its core as it’s not just relatable but also very creative in its delivery of subject matter. It’s a very raw and vulnerable tale about a woman who is self-destructive, depressed, anxious, and introverted but who tries her hardest to set up dates and go out with friends despite this triggering yet another wave of anxiety attacks and a retreat back to the safety of her blanket - while trying to deal with the summer heat and her nagging subconscious. The style of drawings here are so amazingly crude, in a good way; they really get across how the main character can be utterly frantic or completely depleted and hopeless. Take a trip into her mind, as she dissociates after a massive alcohol binge at a party she never wanted to be at in the first place, or is left ghosted after a date gone wrong.

Like stealth games? Try this.

–-

You play a vengeful spirit that’s been allowed to return. It plays out as an isometric puzzle game that requires a tactical approach. The only way you can fight is to possess the bodies of your enemies, but you have limited spirit energy to maintain either possession or a ghost form that lets you move through objects. If you get spotted in your fragile reanimated human body, you die quickly.

This was the first teaser demo and they’ve also released a longer demo with a few more missions (and additional story). The full game launches July 2021.

Feels awesome. Can’t wait to see more.

Perhaps more camera controls like (zooming/panning) wouldn’t hurt.

What I really hope to see in the final release is fast saves/load anytime and insanely hard levels.

Really great works folks!
