Disgaea PC

Note: If you’re able to, get “Disgaea 1 Complete” on the PS4 or Nintendo Switch instead. Since that one has remastered sprites & additional features which will make your experience much more enjoyable, also includes additional characters.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had a fascination with numbers going up. Seeing small numbers turn to big numbers is something I absolutely love in video games, and Disgaea is the perfect game for this. They go overkill with numbers. Personally I never write reviews, but I have to for an amazing game like this. I’ve gotten every single achievement for this game so I believe I have a good idea of everything this game contains.

As of the moment I’ve never completed this game to the end. When I do - and I’m sure eventually I will as I do enjoy it - I’ll probably redo this review. But for the time being it has left me with an impression.

I won’t spoil anything in detail.

My look into Disgaea

You basically take control of a trio of protagonists in this game. Laharl (prince of the underworld), Etna (one of the prince’s demon vassals), and Flonne (an angel). The basic jist of the story is Laharl spends his time in the game exerting how awesome he is by winning fights - which is pretty accurate to how the player themself probably feels as well. The other two protagonists mostly spend their time trying to bring about a softer side to the prince. There are a ton of plot holes throughout the game’s story but I don’t feel they matter since the game never tries to take itself seriously. It’s always cute, silly, or badass. Things as random as having to fight the Power Rangers takes place in this game after all. It’s never really serious - at least not as far as I’ve gotten.

There May Be Ninety-Nine Of Us, But We Have To Win In Ninety-Nine Turns!

This game is pretty definitely the first time I’ve ever spent hours in training mode in a turn-based rpg. I strongly recommend this game to anyone who organizes spreadsheets in their free time. Even if you don’t, though, the pace at which it introduces new tools and concepts means you’re never totally overwhelmed, and while it encourages minmaxing, it’s never exactly necessary to perfectly tweak every character’s loadout. It’s nice.

With the recent release of Disgaea 4 on PC I figured it was time to offer my own thoughts on the ones I’ve played since this series is one I’ve come to enjoy a lot over the past couple of years. With that said having given the first game a review a while ago it only made sense to give one to the second one as well. So what are my thoughts on this game and should you play it considering that 4 & 5 are already available? Well time for me to talk and find out.

So as you start up a new file for the first time, just like in the first game, you’re given a voiceover explaining the current situation. An evil Overlord known as Zenon has corrupted the land of Veldime. A once peaceful world, Zenon’s influence has corrupted all human life, slowly turning them into demons and robbing them of not only their humanity but memories as well. All except for one young man, Adell. In an attempt to undo the mess caused by the God of All Overlords, performs a ritual to summon the all-powerful demon……..only to mess that up and INSTEAD summon his one and only daughter Rozalin. Furious over essentially being kidnapped, she demands our battle loving, firey red haired hero to escort her back. From there it’s up to the two to find Zenon and have whatever happen, well happen. Of course being a Disgaea game, lots of wacky antics and comedy filled turns occur along the way. Which is to be expected but I’d say that the story is a bit more on the serious side. Like the first game it has a healthy amount of comedy injected into its story beats but it early on it has a set goal for our protagonists and for the most part what you do in each “Episode” has something related to either developing our cast or working towards that end goal “Find Zenon”. It’s a fine enough story on its own and gets the job done even if its nothing outstanding. The comedy helps liven things up a bit and i did chuckle at some of the jokes and humor even if I felt like the cast overall wasn’t as good as the two trios from the first game and that the story didn’t have the emotional impact the first one had either. Kind of a shame but it’s certainly not a terrible story either, even by the standards of this series.

Remember, “Your Mileage May Vary” in regards to this port, but I believe that this time around performance is way better on launch than Disgaea PC was. Great job NISA!

TL;DR: I wholeheartedly recommend Disgaea 2 PC for $20, especially if you’ve played Disgaea PC. (Buy it so we can get future Disgaea games on PC :D)

–———————-

Let’s get introductions out of the way first, dood:

Disgaea 2 PC is a port of the PSP remake of Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories, called Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days. (Lots of confusing names thrown around, I apologize! Basically: PS2 - Cursed Memories PSP - Dark Hero Days PC - Disgaea 2 PC) Disgaea 2 PC is much more of the gameplay from Disgaea PC, but improved.

Dungeon Crawler Daniel

Another winner rpg from Wolfs Moon Studio and Shane. This one is different than the others as there is only only one town with multiple dungeon levels. Dungeon levels are timed so have to be quick yet have to fight to build up all the characters you pick up (over 20) on your journey. Huge variety of monsters and bosses (optional ones also) and plenty of items and chests in the dungeons and the town has all the necessary stock needed to buy. Dungeon levels are very well designed and battles are most challenging. Characters are

Just like its demon-turned-angel character, this game has difficulty deciding what it wants to be. Which is unfortunately, as it is a good game. It tries to sell itself on its “sexyness” when in fact, it is hardly present. It tries a lot of gameplay mechanisms but does not really perfect any of them. And I guess that it unfortunately is partially reflected on its score.

So, first, contrary to what the screenshots would suggest, this game has very mild and sparse “sexy content”, to the exlusion of the bath scenes that concludes each chapter. In fact, once you’re past the 1st chapter, it becomes an after-thought story-wise. Maybe the result of the censorship (?), but in my case that striked a good balance.

A game as absurd as it is full of kinks and innuendo as it is fun.

NOTE 1: Pressing R2 can skip battle animations! or you can disable them entirely in the config menu. This is very important for making the grind go faster.

NOTE 2: The free DLC is nothing but OP items that make the game impossible to lose. Disable DLC in the title screen menu before you press New Game if you want to enjoy playing through it vanilla.

Now, onto the review!/Mechanics Summary!

The story can be described in two words: Galactic domination. You play as (say it with me now) a loli heroine who has amnesia, but instead of saving the world you’re going to 7 different planets subjugating each one along the way. This is done by finding the strongest people on every planet and forcing them to join you. Like all Compile Heart games you’ll end up with a large cast of different personalities who are all hilarious to see interact with one another. Sounds fun? It is. Until the grind.

Disgaea 4 Complete+

Disgaea 4 Complete+

If you’ve never played a Disgaea before:

TL;DR: Best Disgaea to start if you want to enter in the franchise’s world.

This is a Strategy RPG. You have story, characters and all that RPG jazz, but the combat plays like chess. Well, over-the-top anime-flavored chess with huge numbers showing on your screen to represent damage and your stats to be more specific.

The Disgaea franchise has 3 characteristics that can define the entire franchise:

  • A wacky story that has a slight serious tone to keep things going. The massacre of the fourth wall and the ridicule of anime tropes are expected.

The Disgaea series is arguably the best Japanese strategy RPGs ever made, at least in terms of gameplay. There’s so many deep game mechanics to delve into, and they’re designed for a long end-game, grinding up level 9999, and beyond. It may sound like a boring grindfest, but the part I like about their endgame is that they’re all designed around the idea of exponential growth. If you’re just mindlessly fighting the same map ad infinitum, you’re doing it wrong. This game is all about coming up with schemes for levelling up as efficiently as possible. Or you can skip the endgame and just play it as a very solid strategy JRPG. If you ignore the endgame, you can make it through with minimal grinding, though the fights could get fairly challenging by the end.

LABYRINTH OF TOUHOU - GENSOKYO AND THE HEAVEN-PIERCING TREE

where do i start on this game’s review? heck if i know but i’ll try to leave it readable

the fun i have had in this game exceeds that of over 99% of rpg games i have ever played the combat is excellent its kinda like active time battle but each time you or the enemy gets their turn the atb bars stop increasing until everyone who has their atb bar around 10000 or so had their turn then atb bars resume increasing up to 10000 then those characters or enemies have thier turn rinse and repeat

the difficulty with the bosses is legendarily hard even by dark souls standards you will die a lot of times and when i say a lot I MEAN YOU WILL DIE A HEAP OF TIMES (assuming if you dont over power yourself because lets face it overpowered characters negating the challenge is less fun then stepping on the edges of lego pieces barefoot) joke aside the some of the bosses will take every single bit of knowledge you have from this game and any other similar role playing games to even have a slight chance take it from me i have been party wiped so fast i didn’t even have time to say darn i got shredded and owned lol (i party wiped so many times though not once have a rage quit because of the boss’s difficulty it happens because i made the blooming mistakes that made the party wipe happen oh for those fans of a certain super hard rpg game im not going to say who it is but all you need know is a certain npc appears from that series somewhere in this game when i saw them i was like nooo….. can it you are you really them? no blooming way its them (yes it was them i can tell because i played a good bit of that game series myself

A breath of fresh air in the current gaming climate! Story and character based game kind of like Disco Elysium, albeit shorter. Big game world, a lot of interaction and different ways to solve the crimes. Some tips I would give to new players:

spec your character right away, you have like 8 points and you have to manually enter each one. A bit unintuitive but you can get the hang of it. Be sure to add your 2 new points after every murder solved. humor and charm go a long way when talking to NPCs.

This Is Not Chess

This Is Not Chess

I’ll admit I bought this purely for the nostalgia that the graphics give me. It reminds me of a lot of gamemaker games that I was obsessed with in my youth.

The game itself however, is suprisingly deep. Each unit has a type and a list of techniques and these techniques take time to pull off. But here’s the catch: you can pay action points to speed it up. You’d think you’d be constantly doing that but action points are shared between the whole team and they are also used to move your units and spawn new ones.
