Dungeons of Dredmor

Dungeons of Dredmor

I can’t believe I haven’t written a review for one of my favorite games of all time.

Dungeons of Dredmor is an incredible roguelike. It’s a liiiiittle buggy, but sometimes that bugginess is part of the charm. Other times you get stuck in geometry by accident and crash to desktop. It’s a SOMEWHAT stable game, but it does sometimes hardlock, so make sure you save frequently(I recommend right before and after heading down a floor).

the classes are varied and creative, with literally over four dozen different skill trees to choose from, you pick seven and head off to your likely rapid doom. Most skill trees have viability, there’s very few out and out stinkers, and even then those can be propped up by better skills or even buoy good skills into amazing skills when combo’d together.

TL:DR Imagine if your favourite comedian was also a nuclear physicist.

It’s taken me a while to write this review - because I CAN’T STOP PLAYING.

Thou art a pimple on the dungeon floor!

I used to play a dungeon based game called Larn when I should have been studying. In those days PCs only had two colours and in that game walls were portrayed using the ‘#’ and ‘U’ was reserved for a creature called Umber Hulk. The little ‘g’ was a creature called Gelatinous Cube. I hated that guy. The whole world was built using key board characters which allowed your imagination to flourish. Cue deep romantic sigh.

Okhlos: Omega

This is indeed a pretty fun game when it comes down to its core gameplay. I’m not sure about the price tag associated with this but will gladly gives this an enthusiastic thumbs up if can pick this game up for 10 bucks or less.

The best thing about this game is that it’s very east to pick up and play. There really isn’t much to it other than running around and picking up citizens along the way to add to your mob and wreck every thing and every one that stands in your way.

It isn’t all about just running around though. There are times in which you have to defend against certain types of attacks an enemy makes and when to rally the mob together to avoid a trap or hazard.

Time to dispense some mob justice on Zeus & his pals as we get to lace up our sandals and head out on an Odyssey worth writing Homer about in - Okhlos.

Probably best described as a mob-handed, roguelite brawler you lead a group of disgruntled Greeks across the ancient world to the gates of Mount Olympus. Your goal - to destroy all the gods. But rather than taking the old Kratos, God of War approach you don’t actually get you hands dirty. Instead you get your horde of fighters, slaves and citizens to do all the head bashing for you. Sending them chasing after your target reticle in something akin to a twin-stick rampage of destruction.

World’s Fastest Pizza

World’s Fastest Pizza

As an Australian, I feel that it is my solemn duty to leave a review for this game. World’s Fastest Pizza is an entertaining game with a fun gameplay loop of delivering pizzas amid all kinds of chaos and destruction. It depicts some of the often ridiculed aspects of contemporary Aussie culture, but even if you don’t get all the references there is plenty of over the top action to fall back on. If you enjoy the work of The Chaser and other Australian satirists, then you will probably get a kick out of this game – see the trailers on the store page for what I mean. World’s Fastest Pizza has a crude sense of humour that may not be for everyone, but it doesn’t punch down.

I know what you’re thinking. A serious review on this game? That is a recipe for disaster, kinda like electing Tony Abbott. ‘World’s Fastest Pizza’ is a high speed rogue-like comedy game about delivering pizza to the hungry customers of a sleazy fast-food restaurant. Developed by Oscar Brittain, you play as Tortoiseman, who also works under the alias of Cornelius Pretorius. Aside from winning the naming lottery, the game’s protagonist also has the prestige of working at fast-food restaurant in the outbacks of Australia.

5/10

I really want to highly recommend this game but the reasons I’m about to go into, I can’t. I would, however, say get this game if you like a short but pretty ok dungeoncrawler one shot.

TL:DR

Pros:

  • Dungeoncrawling aspect done well

  • Beautiful art, beautiful characters

  • Diverse cast

  • Interesting characters

Cons:

  • Shallow glimpses into the characters and finishes right as you start to care

  • No replay motivation (save for wanting to see dialogue)

  • Only 1 female dating option

“We’re just too hot for this old rickety thing to handle."

Verona Beach – a chill place to spend the summer. Especially in a rent-free apartment previously occupied by your cousin. Kind of him to offer you the space, even if he’s one of the most obnoxious and interfering people you’ll ever meet. But hey, families – can’t pick ‘em.

But you can pick lovers, and that’s part of the reason you’re here. See, you’ve never had a date. Not even once. Your cousin, under some duress from your mother, has been assigned your wingman, but it won’t be long before you’re able to make connections at your own pace.

TL;DR Not a hack-and-slash

Quick and surprisingly addictive dungeon-crawler with lots of mazes, simple rules, high strategy and low luck – you only die when you’ve made a blunder, or backed yourself into a corner by poor planning.

This may seem like a simple hack-and-slash, but it’s not. There’s almost no luck and a surprising amount of planning involved. Each dungeon is like a puzzle, and might take 15-45 minutes to complete. You start each dungeon as a lowly level 1 character. Kill the monsters in a certain order and gain the power-ups at the right times and you will be able to defeat the boss-monster and thus “win” each dungeon. if you randomly charge in like a hack-and-slash game, you won’t maximize your powerups and you won’t have enough health to tackle the tougher monsters. Same if you spend the power-ups too soon. If you don’t defeat the tougher monsters, you don’t gain the experience-point bonuses to increase your abilities enough to tackle the boss-monster. As you complete dungeons, you can unlock other character classes (again, you start each dungeon back as level 1 and the layout of each dungeon is randomly generated each time).

I was wary of this. I played a ton of alpha, even after I had unlocked everything and finished all the levels. It was a lot of fun, and I appreciated the minimalism of the game. I paid for the advance copy something like three years ago, played the game, then stopped and sort of put it behind me for a while.

Then, just a couple weeks ago, I saw that it was released on steam. While I thought about looking up my copy of it, minutes later I received a message saying because I paid in advance I got a steam key!
