JankBrain

JankBrain

Update: As of 2/7/2021, JankBrain was updated with a new core gameplay mechanic that significantly increases the fun, imo. Now, collecting the plentiful vitamins throughout each level charges up a boost meter. It only takes four vitamins to charge it to max, but the boost can be used even with only one charge. It behaves in the same way as Dumpster Bear 2’s boost, allowing you to launch yourself in any direction and also attack through enemies and damaging obstacles (apart from one-hit kill obstacles). Depending on the charge level, you’ll get a varying degree of distance from the boost. It makes the speedrun medals much easier, but the potential for competitive speedrunning is now huge, and it’s more fun to play casually as well.

There is a very high probability that if you liked Epic Dumpster Bear, you will enjoy this as well.

I’m enjoying it very much.

It’s too early to tell if Jank Brain is ultimately a BETTER character. The jury is out. Simple platforming goodness.

Dinky Dungeon

Dinky Dungeon

Dinky Dungeon is an absurd arena shooter game with a (relatively) charmingly ugly style. All the sounds in the game are recorded and engineered by a single guy and a cat. Yes, finally I found a chance to give a role to my cat in this game!

Story

You and your grandfather start a dungeon business for trapping evil creatures away from the town. You are the muscles and your grandfather is the brain. You have to deal with the problems whenever your grandfather calls you. You can be sure that he causes a lot of problems. There will be 21 levels with different quests, while you improve your small dungeon with your grandfather.

Gameplay

It is mostly kill whatever you see on sight. But at the start of each level you will be given some quests. For example: kill 30 goblins, dismantle the traps, protect the crate shipment, solve the puzzle mechanisms, slay the goddesses or bosses, destroy the nests.

As you kill creatures and complete the quests, you will earn experience and you will be able to improve your character.

Giants, minotaur, skeletons, trolls, goblins, bandits, falcons, slimes, lich lords are some of the enemies you will encounter with.

List of features

  • Scenario mode with 21 levels, and endless arena modes

  • Absurdly unique and fun arena shooter gameplay

  • Remarkable graphics and sound effects

  • Character progression with various abilities and weapons

  • Various enemies with different features

  • Boss fights

  • Lots of quests

  • Live leaderboards and achievements

  • A hell of a grandfather

Leisure Suit Larry - Wet Dreams Don’t Dry

Leisure Suit Larry - Wet Dreams Don’t Dry

10/10 Must buy

Disclaimer: I received a review copy by Assemble Entertainment for this review

Note: This is a shortened version of a review from Gao Li Occasionally Reviews to fit Steam’s 4000 character limit.

When Assemble Entertainment acquired the license to make Larry games, they certainly had their work cut out for them. After all, each entry’s about Larry’s attempts to get laid, which, if writers & developers are not careful, can backfire horribly. Surprisingly, the original 1980s&90s games not only walked this delicate line gracefully, but garnered a sizable female player base. Nevertheless, some views expressed therein can seem dated or insensitive nowadays. I therefore asked the developers of this new entry if it was difficult to bring Larry to the new age, to which the lead writer, Falko Löffler, told me, “At first we had a concept where Larry, with his [views] of the 1980s, would be confronted with the modern times. Therefore, we didn’t have to change Larry at all. The entire team designed characters & situations that would pose big problems for Larry, because he doesn’t understand them. None of these were issues for us, but instead it was a lot of fun. We hope that new & old fans will like our interpretation of Larry.”

If you are a fan of Leisure Suit Larry, then buy and enjoy this game, it is a worthy entry into the LSL franchise.

However if you are just an adventure point and click fan, maybe buy it on sale.

CrazyBunch gave Larry a much better treatment than it has had in a long time. Jan Rabson returns as the voice of Larry Laffer, and brings him to life as the sleezy loser we love to see fail. The effort put into making this game feel like a LSL game, rather than the Lovage offerings, is noticable in both the kinds of callback jokes and puns in the writing. Overall a great effort, but not a perfect game either.

Simon the Sorcerer: 25th Anniversary Edition

Simon the Sorcerer: 25th Anniversary Edition

I have to applaud whoever is in charge of this remaster for their radical new approach to remastering games. The influx of constant reboots reaping easy cash from aging millennials who use nostalgia to mentally prepare for a lingering midlife crisis seems to have grown quite stale given that all reboots follow the same old paradigm: take an old game, improve some aspects of it to make it somewhat more palatable to a 2020 audience, profit, rinse and repeat. It is therefor exquisitely refreshing experience MojoTouch’s brave decision to deviate from the stagnating market of hi-res renditions of 90s walking simulators by actually making it WORSE. And let me assure you, they did not hold back.

Okay, so this isn’t a black-or-white decision for some. But if you tally it all up and look at the bottom line, it’s a resounding yes.

Is it an actual HD remaster? No, it isn’t. But they clealry state it’s an xBRZ upscale and nothing else. And there’s an option to play the original style, which we switched to in a click of a button.

Would I have loved the graphic interface option? Sure, but it’s not a dealbreaker.

But here are the main pro points:

Nobody buys the rights for an old point and click game and releases it with bonus material to make a quick buck. These guys love the game and made it available for old fans and new. Cease it.

Epic Dumpster Bear 2: He Who Bears Wins

Epic Dumpster Bear 2: He Who Bears Wins

If you haven’t played the first Dumpster Bear, you should know that it’s not just a meme game. It’s a fast-paced, actually pretty good platformer. Each level has 3 hidden red coins to collect and speedrun medals to achieve. There are optional, more challenging levels that are unlocked through secret exits and spending the yellow coins you collect while playing. And there are goofy boss battles and over-dramatic cutscenes. The soundtrack is actually original and composed specifically for Dumpster Bear, and it’s a real highlight of the game.

Heroes Must Die

Heroes Must Die

7.5/10

This game is very hit or miss. The ideas are geat and unique but the excecution is passable at best and uninteresting at worst. The combat is very engaging and unique but it get’s reppetitive and easy quickly. The writing is great and never slows down with it’s wit and charm but the story is short, predictable and boring. The bosses are interesting and provide a slight change in combat but they aren’t distingushable from each other most of the time due to most of them having the same attacks and they aren’t very difficult. The characters are fun and have interesting designs but they are undeveloped and most don’t get enough screen time. I appreciate the game’s attempt to remedy the difficulty by introducing new enemis with different attack patterns later on but those get predictable as well and the last enemies you fight have the same patterns as the first ones. The game has more good points than bad and I do recomend it but understand that it’s not as good as the developers say it is. The worst thing I can say about this game is that I would never pay money for it.

+Free

+Decently funny story

+Original combat system

-Easy, with no difficulty settings. Most attack patterns are really easy to remember, and so even if you suck at landing comboes, there’s never any urgency if you can just dodge all the attacks round after round

-No option to pause in battle

-No option to make faster the fighting animations you’ve seen a bajillion times

-Choices don’t matter at all

  • The art is OK.

  • Duration is about ~4,5 hours.

7.5/10 overall.
