Clunky Hero

Clunky Hero

I wrote a quick thumbs-up review after 20mins of playing the game. Now that I finished it, I am editing my review cause I cannot give a thumbs-up anymore. I got to give 2 thumbs-up! I haven’t had so much fun playing a platform game since I played Wonderboy in Monsterland back in the 80s. Clunky Hero features gorgeous gfx, excellent soundtrack, and some of the most brilliant sfx and speech (speech?!) you’ll ever hear in a game. And while all that is great, a platform game needs to pay attention to 2 major areas: controls and difficulty curve. And Clunky excels here as well. The controls are so smooth, they can have the ladies swooning. And the difficulty curve is perfect, giving you plenty of time to frolic about before things start getting tough. Add to that all the cool secrets and bonuses, and Clunky Hero cannot be recommended enough. And that’s just the early access version I played.

A metroidvania platform game with funny characters, dirty jokes and nerd references!

As seen for the studio’s previous games like Encodya, there is a lot of love for old school games.

The difficulty level is pretty high and some of the puzzles are not so straightforward. You will need to navigate and visit again old areas to access parts thanks to newly acquired skills.

The art is delightful, both for the monsters and for the wonderful backgrounds. Special mention for the original music and the “dialogues” (sort of…)

Headlander

Headlander

Headlander is a 70s style sci-fi Metroidvania game from “Double Fine Games” and published by Adult Swim.

During the current indie renaissance we are currently seeing a decent amount of Metroidvania games none of which from Castlevania or Metroid but that’s a conversation for another time.

A few videos ago we looked at the rather excellent Ghost 1.0 and actually Headlander is in many ways very similar so is it worth jumping in for some more Metroidvania loveliness yet again?

Headlander sees you in a futuristic Dystopia where mankind have replaced their bodies with robotic ones. The main premise of the game is you are the last human awoken from cryogenic storage and thus only your head has survived. So you find yourself as a floating head in a jar which can float around and attach yourself to other robots. The setting of the game is vaguely reminiscent of something like Logan’s Run in terms of style.

Headlander is a game made in 2D Metroidvania style and reminds me of a game I played in the past titled Apotheon. They’re both in 2D and look like low budget games. However, the similarities end there. Apotheon is set in ancient Greece whereas Headlander is set in a sci-fi 1970s world with both a retro and futuristic look. Headlander represents retrofuturism. The music has a groovy beat and sounds like 1970s disco.

You begin the game choosing a male or female Headlander. You are just a disembodied head inside a spacesuit helmet. You have no torso or larynx. Therefore, you have no voice. There is a jet thruster in the place where your larynx should be. You are the only human in the game and are guided by an AI named Earl, a male voice with an American southern accent.

UnEpic

UnEpic

Unepic for me is considered one of the best games I’ve ever played. While I play this game and I am writing notes in my book, I can describe that I feel a lot of fluency because I travel at least 20 years ago, where at 10 years I tried to unravel certain platform games like pc snes or megadrive. This for me is considered a good snes game but with a modern twist.

This is a game that is a little difficult to play, because it requires a lot of effort and sacrifice spirit to be able to enjoy this beautiful game. This game has some similarities to the Castelvania, a game created in 1987 for snes and that had a great success until 2010. To walk in a giant castle, from room to room with the lights out, without knowing the danger that awaits to us, does not seem to be An easy task, but when we light up all the torches and we come across a room filled with enemy goblins, orcs, skeletons, and other villains thirsting for revenge, then yes we have all the items to be a good game. This game is full of quests and side_quests where we can win several items that can be extremely valuable in another part of the game.

There is two part to this game : Solo and Muli.

Solo is a good adventure, fun to play, fun story, a bit of humor (mostly scatological or pop culture winks) and a good scenario. A great metroidvania with 3 littles flaws :

  1. Combat system is horrible. Can’t dodge, can’t kite (beside 2 very slow creatures in the game). You either kill from afar before they reach you or you slugfest them to death while chugging healing pots and rejuv spell. Jump are awfull, weapons animations are clunky, spells must be done standing and are interupted by anything. Pets (free moving and firing companions) are often the best source of dps/CC you will have.

Guacamelee! Gold Edition

Guacamelee! Gold Edition

This game is a love song to Super Metroid played by a nerdy mariachi band.

Instead of an arm cannon, you use your fists. Instead of a morph ball, you turn into a chicken. Instead of color-coded doors to be opened with the appropriate weapon, there are colored blocks to be smashed with your varied slam attacks. You even gain your powers by destroying precious Chozo statues (more on that later.)

The best part of this game, hands down, is the combat. The multitude of useful attacks at your disposal, combined with the responsive dodging mechanic and the fun and powerful grapples means that the combo system is both useful and rewarding. Battles in this game just resonate with me as being really fun, as you can bash some skeletons around, throw them into other skeletons, and just keep it going as the numbers on your screen go up and up and you get a bigger money reward when the fight is finished. It’s just really fun, and the enemies are well designed to let you take advantage of combos and such if you’re good.

-Quick Review-

Guacamelee! Gold Edition is an action, adventure, 2D, indie platformer that has strong Spanish/Mexican themes. Not only that, but there are hilarious cross-game-references. The game play is fun, fast paced, and dynamic. I greatly enjoyed this game, and recommend it to anyone who enjoys indie adventure-type games.

-Detailed breakdown review-

Story: You are Juan, you are trying to save el presidente’s daughter (whom everyone tells you that you’ve had a crush on since you were little. Everyone knows but me?) The villain Calaca has taken her and Juan must master his powers as a Lunchador to save not only el presidente’s daughter, but to also save both the world of the living and the dead.

Now, at the time of this review, I have only had the game for 5 days. But throughout those 5 days, my experience with this game has been amazing. You start out with absolutely nothing, just a walk and a jump. As you progress through the game, however, you will gain many more abilities that I will not name because, y’know, spoilers. The movement at the beginning feel clunky and uncomfortable but as you play the game, the movement just feels better and better and it just gets to this point where it is extremely satisfying when you can do something combinal most/all of those techniques. If you do wish to buy this game, DO NOT do what I did and do your first playthrough in masochist mode where instead of 3 hearts and 2 checkpoints, its only 1 heart and 1 checkpoint. If you do decide however that you are a masochist and want to do masochist mode on your first playthrough, well, I sincerely wish you the best of luck. I would rate this game a 9.5/10, why 9.5 and not 10? Probably just because of the movement at the beginning and how disgusting it feels. But all things aside, this is an absolutely amazing game so please buy it and support the developer who has been working really hard on this game.

Dark Sales

Quite difficult but quite funny 2d RPG set in an office filled with monsters and other employees who try to kill you - and if you die, you’ll lose your job - and then how will you pay your rent?

Taking heavy inspiration from it’s tongue in cheek name, Dark Sales is a 2D Souls-like game with charmingly simple visuals and strikingly challenging gameplay. Taking place in an office setting with most enemies being other employees the game is satisfyingly solid. We spent a few hours with the game and here are our spoiler-free first impressions.

How does it look?:

The game is highly stylized with simplistic but very effective visuals. We initially had some difficulty discerning what we could and couldn’t interact with in the relatively open world but the game’s consistency and informative tutorial set us up for success in the long run. Whether you’re resting at water coolers, fighting pencil pushers, or exploring a sewer you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the look of Dark Sales.

Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit

Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit

When I began playing Hell Yeah! I was not sure if I could enjoy an action platformer that looks like Mario Bros. from the 1980s. It looks like an interactive cartoon movie that requires plenty of jumping and jumping skill are required to advance in this game. I do not play many action platformers. After playing the first zone for a little bit, I felt like I could slowly enjoy this game.

The basic theme of the game centers around Ash, the protagonist rabbit. He is the rabbit prince of hell who finds out that photos of him romancing with a rubber duck could be made public on the Hellternet, hell’s version of the internet. There are 100 monsters who saw the photos, leaving Ash with one choice: kill them all. The story takes place across 10 zones, but there are restricted parts of zones so that you can defeat a certain number of monsters so that doors can explode to give you access to more of the zone.

Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition

Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition

The Short and Sweet

Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition is a hybrid beat-em-up / Metroidvania game based on Mexican culture, with a large emphasis on combo-based combat, intelligent approach, and platforming. The story revolves around a farmer named Juan, who is killed by the main antagonist while attempting to save his friend, only to come back possessing the power of a magical mask, which turns him into a powerful Luchador intent on punching, suplexing and bodyslamming his way to victory.

A great mexican themed Metroidvania.

Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition is a revised version of the original Guacamelee Gold Edition, featuring new content. the game is a Metroidvania where the main focus is platforming with enemies to take out all set in a Mexican styled world. For my very first Metroidvania it was a wonderful experience with good gameplay and solid combat mechanics and plenty of extras.

Gameplay, Guacamelee’s gameplay is simple but solid featuring basic platforming with a extensive move set that you use both for platforming and combat. It is very easy to get used to Juan’s (Main Character) jump arc and be able to land jumps. Plus along the way you moves will increase so you can pull off some awesome combos. Speaking of combos, Guacamelee’s combat is also a major portion of the game, encouraging you to build large combos with a variety of moves. as such with extensive combat, there are enemies galore with many different ways of combat and different ways to deal with them. Dodging from attacks is very crucial to survive.
