Broken Age

Broken Age

Broken Age is a game that I haven’t yet sat down to distill my thoughts on. It’s the game that brought Double Fine to my attention and would eventually lead me to becoming a key member in the community. Between running Game Club , Bad Golf , becoming a volunteer moderator on the forums, and so on, it’s hard for me to think about Broken Age or the DFA as a whole without stopping to ponder the impact of those activities on my life.

My rating: 7+/10

Based on: two playthroughs (one full and one speedrun)

TL;DR: Double Fine’s Broken Age may have been one of the early success stories for the Kickstarter-backed projects, but it didn’t live up to the expectations of a long-starved fan of the point-and-click adventure games such as myself. Admittedly, that wasn’t entirely its fault: it’s a good game with a great production value for its budget, but it doesn’t exactly stand tall among the all-time greats of the genre, either. Not an instant classic, but very charming, it offers an intriguing coming-of-age story, memorable characters, excellent writing, art and sound design, but the second act is sort of a drag.

Lancelot’s Hangover: The Quest for the Holy Booze

This game is a barrel bursting with absolute nonsense. And this is why it’s terrific.

The art style is simplistic but serves the humour very well, the puzzles aren’t hard, until the last chapter where it’s more of a “How much do you remember of the game you’ve played and the locations you’ve visited” luckily the game cuts off branches you don’t need to revisit so it doesn’t become annoying.

It’s a laugh and a half and definitely worth a look.

Do you have a sense for black humor? Then you have to play Lancelot’s Hangover. That seems familiar to me… anyway I would say even if you don’t have a sense for black humor you have to play it because it’s a great sexy adventure game. Everything is alright. I can’t complain. It reminded me a bit of my childhood when I was in the monastery and in the church. At that time there were unfortunately no naked women in the monastery. It also reminds me of Marilyn Manson when he says: I don’t like the drugs but the drugs like me. Lancelot should sing that, the sexy knight with beer (I recommend the Bavarian beer).

[Edited as the Dev’s provided prompt troubleshooting for crashing issues. You can see my original first paragraph in the comments section. In all my days playing games, I have never met a more polite and speedy reply to fix a problem. Good work team Super Daryl.]

I had fun playing this game, the game play and nerdly humour was enjoyable. This is an artistic, lite game that works well if you need a break from heady intense gaming or just to relax.

From the get go SDD gets 100% on its art style; it pays homage to the awkward high school experience making sure to not miss making a caricature of every clique, staff member, and school subject. There is nothing quite like this art style and it is a real pleasure to see. The game play is that of an action platformer with a dash of RPG elements: Daryl is able to gain levels, equip items, purchase and upgrade moves.

Old and New moves alike are relevant all game, unlike most ‘So many moves!’ games

While some may consider it a small thing, many of the earlier attacks flow very well into combos. Then near the end of the game, your ranks ups give a passive that buffs all your old weak tier moves. And even earlier in the main plot you are given the option to cycle through two movesets with RT.

For example. Your very first “trash” tier move (2 hit combo, upgrades to 3) caps out at about 50% damage per hit, but lets you air combo like mad. Then it later gets bumped up to 110% once you get your endgame passives.

2020 Speedy Review Cleanup

Do I highly recommend this game? No.

But Landflix Odyssey is interesting solely for its parody aspects about the shows. Each show has its own mechanics so that it doesn’t feel like you’re doing the same thing throughout the game.

Worth a try on sale if you’re interested in the show aspects. If you don’t care about the shows, probably look elsewhere.

Got the full game a while ago, and I wanted to update my review. Now it’s finally the time to do so!

I’m not gonna lie, I downloaded this game without almost any expectations for it.

Well, I’m happy to announce that this game surpased my almost non-existing expectations. Just you look at how much I spent playing this game, and you’ll understand what I’m saying.

Let’s review it for parts, so it’s a bit easier both for me and you (or at least I hope so)

The characters

As the description of the game already tells you, the main characters are jerks, each one of them. You can’t escape them. But, actually, that’s pretty good! Each one of them have a very unique personality, and that’s one of the great things of this game! All of them are different from the others, and you’ll notice that when you date, in the meetings, and the random events, and I find them very funny! Believe me when I tell you, that you’ll end loving all of these jerks if you give them a chance. They are well written, and there’s so much to them, learning more things about these guys is really enjoyable.

I LOVE this game! Most of the bad reviews were about the personalities of the MC and the guys, which I don’t really think is fair considering that was the whole point of the game. I liked that it was different, and I enjoyed their annoying quirks and rudeness and angry banter. What can I say? Bad to say this maybe, but I loved the MC’s personality. Impulsive, self-centered, blunt, and rude at times. She’s much more fun than what I’m used to in regular otome… And she meant well, she just had too much self-confidence hahaha I think that’s loads better than whiny, suck-up MC’s who can’t do anything but cry when they’re in trouble. Different strokes…

Voices from the Sea

Voices from the Sea, where do I start……..

Well I guess I should preface this by saying I bought this VN instead of starting out with the free version, although I was happy with what I got I’d recommend getting the free version to see if you like it before investing money.

Now that’s out of the way; I came across this VN when it was up for kickstart and it sparked an interest in me, now that its up on steam I was able to read it and see what it’s creator had in store, and Im pleased to say I was not disappointed.

So the story goes …

I was bored one afternoon after school and didn’t feel like playing my usual games and felt quite sad/not in a good mood so I decided to just check out the steam store and look for some free games to try.

I came across this game and I didn’t think too much of it, people seemed to like it a lot and and the average play time was about an hour so I thought I might give it a try and see how good that hour would be.

At first it was a bit weird playing a novel game because I have never played one before but as I progressed through the story I felt very connected to the story and felt myself getting pulled in and wanting to know more.

I backed this game on Kickstarter and I think it is so much better than anticipated!

It is such a colourful and fun platfurmer game. The art in this game is amazing, with such attention to small details. The 2.5D is used creatively with monsters and boss levels. At the beginning I thought it would be a bit easy but the levels become more difficult and intriguing as you go along, as well as adding side missions and charming little surprises. I love playing it and even my husband was impressed by it. Highly recommend for enjoyable and lovely time.

Kickstarter backer here. Just started playing the game with my xbox controller and I love it. What a wonderful 2.5D platformer! I dig the color scheme so much, it’s so fun and whimsical and vibrant. There’s a balloon ability that you can basically use whenever you land, so you don’t have to collect any items to activate, which allows you to float–it’s a lot of fun! There’s plenty of secrets with hidden treasure and stuff to climb (so usually there’s a path above you you may want to explore as well).

NAIRI: Tower of Shirin

NAIRI: Tower of Shirin

Firstly I want to say that I really enjoyed this, from the art style to the gameplay. With a simple well laid out interface and bright colourful visuals, it’s definitely an easy and attractive game to get in to, almost deceptively so. Be warned, some of the puzzles later do get harder, so be prepared.

Set in a fantasy world using cute Ghibli like visuals (which was apparently a major influence according to the developers) where animals live alongside humans, it tells the story of Nairi as she must deal with a mystery conspiracy after running from her previously rich sheltered life. With sections told in a visual novel style, it brings in the point-and-click adventure for much of it, whilst throwing in some serious old school logic puzzles along the way (which is where the warning comes in).

A great story and challenging puzzles to give your brain a workout

Nairi: Tower of Shirin is a point-and-click adventure produced by the team at HomeBearStudio where players follow Nairi in her quest to reunite with her parents. Along the way, she’ll meet a colourful cast of characters, both friend and foe as she explores hand-drawn environments like desert bandit camps, bustling cities, and ancient underground temples. The story seems simple enough, and while the dialogue doesn’t complicate things. The game itself has remarkable, gentle humour with great storytelling and challenging puzzles that will keep you thinking for hours.

AR-K

AR-K

I received this game as a part of some bundle I bought way back.

I want to like this game. I wish the development team the best. But unfortunately I cannot recommend it, not even for $8 USD.

There are good, or at least decent, things here. There is some humor, including physical humor, that works. The actual voice lines are mostly fine, and what faults there are there in this audio itself are much more likely on the VA director and/or scriptwriters. Barring one jarring segment of lines I noticed in the 2nd episode where something obviously went wrong in recording or compression or something, but the team decided to use it anyway, which… fits with some of my suspicions about how out-of-time/energy/money they were feeling at the time.

Real player with 16.5 hrs in game

AR-K may be a study in how to have an okay story, okay graphics and good voice-acting and still come out with a bad game - soo manyy problems.

This title consists of the first two episodes of the game, “Gone with the Sphere” and “The Girl Who Wasn’t There”, and the second feels way better than the first. Still, we see a lot of beginner’s mistakes in the handiwork. Basically every aspect of the game is flawed in some way or another.
