The Big Con

The Big Con

The game has a lot going for it, it’s designed with optional content in mind, the locations are fun to explore, the aesthetic is very captivating, the soundtrack constantly changes to match the environment, and it has funny characters that create a grounded, but enjoyable narrative. I think the story had a good pace to it, if you take into consideration all of the things that can grab your attention, they managed to keep it together very well. You can casually complete the game around 5 to 7 hours, there are many optional achievements and cosmetic trinkets, although it would be nice to have the ability to replay specific chapters. Having played the game only once, I am not sure how much impact the narrative choices actually have, the only thing I can confirm is that certain quests have more than one soluton. It’s not a difficult game in terms of puzzles and mechanics, there is usually a place to get hints, and sometimes the game offers you a way to skip a puzzle with a payment. As for the ‘thief’ gameplay, there is not much to it, it’s just a simple timing event with little to no punishment for the failure - I guess it does not make for a deep con game, if you were expecting that.

Absolutely charming and filled with character. I don’t normally gravitate toward things for nostalgia but this game captures the 90s feel so well I can’t help but grin like an idiot while playing. The art style reminds me of so many cartoons and sitcoms from the era, complete with (optional) laugh track. The music is fantastic throughout. The dialogue has an endearing sense of humor. The areas are fun to explore and puzzles fun to solve. And the game, at least as I played it, feels strangely and incredibly wholesome given it’s a game about stealing.

Digital Janitors

Digital Janitors

Digital Janitors is a really cool concept for a game. You play as an IT man who is trying to fight back hackers invading the computer system of your company. The main game play consist of sorting folder that either contain important files into the secure folder or harmful malware into the trash bin. The game play is the main selling point of the game and the developers keep it interesting by continuously introducing new folder types and power ups. The power ups are really creative some of them include, being able to highlight multiple folders like your actual desk top and sort them, a sort.exe that auto sorts folders, or a nuke that is just a screen wipe that you definitely need for the later game levels. The power ups do feel a little to over powered at times especially some of the ones you get later in the game. If you want to play without power ups it is almost impossible. You can tell the game was balanced around having the player using them which is fair for a lot of work went into making each one feel special either through its animation or its utility as an item. For what the game is I feel like this is a fair balance.

Russian Reality

Russian Reality

On the whole, it’s not a bad game. Good combat system, there are four main characters to play as. The presence of bosses is nice. And the cherry on the cake is a very rich storyline, with side quests that depend on your choice. Recommended for purchase !

Cool game in which you need to fight drunks, complete tasks and complete the story. The game has many locations, skill leveling of the character and many different chips.

A very decent game for a sane price. Recommend.

Video World

Video World

Disclaimer: Indie work is short and sweet. Don’t expect a lot.

This companion to the EP Video World by Monster Mansion also scored Excellence in Emerging Games at this year’s AGDAs (that’s Australian Game Developer Awards, just in case you’re unfamiliar). It’s a well known fact that Halloween is Christmas for the gays, and this rhythm game harnesses that energy with upbeat synth-pop and some excellent pun work. The bright primary colours and crisp character design make night shift at the video store a delight. This also is a continuation of Film Victoria’s fine work in gaming. Thumbs up from me.

I really loved Video World! The text was witty and got plenty of laughs from me, the gameplay really fun and enjoyable, and the music is amazing! I felt like the human manifestation of catJAM bopping to the music while playing. It is a short game, but a lot of fun.

Jerma & Otto: The Curse of the Late Streamer

Jerma & Otto: The Curse of the Late Streamer

Before this game, my only real Jerma exposure was the dollhouse stream… so I’m writing this review from the POV of somebody that just wants a fun game. And I gotta say - I really feel like Curse of the Late Streamer delivers.

The puzzles are never overly challenging, and I say this as someone who generally sucks at point-and-clicks. Everything feels fair. And here’s my advice if you get stuck on a puzzle: just go do something else. There’s plenty to explore and work towards.

It is really really cool how much original art is in this game, too. Characters that are (presumably, again I am a newcomer) all drawn from Jerma lore? 3D environments that both evoke old-school game memories and feel like a real (virtual) space that this guy could live in? The dog is adorable?? Seriously, such an impressive amount of effort.

Simon the Sorcerer: 25th Anniversary Edition

Simon the Sorcerer: 25th Anniversary Edition

I have to applaud whoever is in charge of this remaster for their radical new approach to remastering games. The influx of constant reboots reaping easy cash from aging millennials who use nostalgia to mentally prepare for a lingering midlife crisis seems to have grown quite stale given that all reboots follow the same old paradigm: take an old game, improve some aspects of it to make it somewhat more palatable to a 2020 audience, profit, rinse and repeat. It is therefor exquisitely refreshing experience MojoTouch’s brave decision to deviate from the stagnating market of hi-res renditions of 90s walking simulators by actually making it WORSE. And let me assure you, they did not hold back.

Real player with 19.2 hrs in game

Okay, so this isn’t a black-or-white decision for some. But if you tally it all up and look at the bottom line, it’s a resounding yes.

Is it an actual HD remaster? No, it isn’t. But they clealry state it’s an xBRZ upscale and nothing else. And there’s an option to play the original style, which we switched to in a click of a button.

Would I have loved the graphic interface option? Sure, but it’s not a dealbreaker.

But here are the main pro points:

Nobody buys the rights for an old point and click game and releases it with bonus material to make a quick buck. These guys love the game and made it available for old fans and new. Cease it.

The Benza RPG

The Benza RPG

For fans of the television show, The Benza RPG is a dream come true. Literally every character in The Benza and Benza English can be found in the game.

The battle system reminds me of Final Fantasy 10 as you can switch characters in and out of combat if you have more than four. Each weapon has different skills attached to it which allows you to customize your team a bit. Party members each have their own set role in combat. Each character is really useful, and there is no character that I just left on the bench. My favorite part about this is that even characters not in combat gain experience. It was really fun that the main cast of the television show voiced their characters, but I wished they had subtitles. Maybe a future update?

Real player with 67.2 hrs in game

A bit of backstory. The Benza is a Japanese web tv show about a couple guys wanting to replace their broken toilet seat and end up getting dragged into a crazy supernatural quest to save the world. The Benza RPG is a nice companion to the show, trapping the whole cast of characters in a video game universe. If you’re familiar with the show, the humor sticks, so I recommend watching a few episodes first. Otherwise, I don’t know if anything would make sense.

Pros

-surprisingly deep story

-witty dialogue

Rock ‘n’ Roll Will Never Die!

Rock ‘n’ Roll Will Never Die!

For some of us, the 1980s never ended. The true scene veterans persevered through the changing trends in music, fashion and common decency, keeping glam rock alive through sheer stubbornness and detachment from reality. When one of the least successful bands in hair metal decides it’s time for a comeback, no one is safe. They may have put on a few pounds and lost some of their graying hair, but their rocking power and sex appeal are still… Uh, as questionable as ever? But this time they’re sure to make it big. This time rock ‘n ‘roll will never die!
