Ponpu

Graphics: the style of black and white with colored accents is really well done- for the most part there’s a nice clarity to it all (minus some bones that look like they might be able to be walked over) and a lot of restraint is used in what is chosen to be colored. Boss design range from referential to repulsive in the same comedic way like Castle Crasher’s Catfish boss, but feel unique from one another and from the normal baddies.

Gameplay: Bomberman but strange duckbomberman creature instead. Rapidly launching bombs feels really nice, hitting things and destroying the environment feels impactful, Dashing through stages especially feels rewarding and frenetic. Some small issues with the cooldown with dashing feeling a bit random, and limitations to launching bombs where after 8-9 the next will suddenly not be launched and lead to a lot of accidental self-explosion during bosses. Stages in Story Mode scale up nicely, though it does treat you to a lot of dead ends and force you to explore around for the exit and the key, so if you like more linear experiences this might frustrate you especially near the end.

After some time with the game and almost being done with the story mode, I’m pretty mixed, but more on the negative side.

Ponpu is clearly inspired by that of Super Bomberman for the SNES, and it does a good job of making the idea unique: A game with different kinds of characters with different bomb abilities, a beautiful, yet wacky art style that ties in well with the goofy music backing the game, and overall a fresh take on the Bomberman games.

However, at times I found the redundancy of the story mode really sank in and made the game pretty boring: Walk around, blow things up to get rainbow feathers, kill enemies, get the gold key, move on- three normal levels and one boss, each stage. After the first three bosses, I was expecting some sort of change to how to advance on the levels/the challenge of beating the story. Yet all it did was change the look of the level, the look/difficulty of some enemies, and that’s about it. I do really enjoy the bosses, though, and I think Purple Tree did a very good job of making some nice boss fights in the story.

100-Player Twitch Chat Party Pack

100-Player Twitch Chat Party Pack

Welcome to the 100-Player Twitch Chat Party Pack, a set of upgraded arcade game classics that let you play in real-time with or against your viewers. Imagine something like Twitch Plays Pokemon where everyone controls their own character (viewers use Twitch Chat commands) and it’s absolute chaos. And when you need to step away, AFK Mode will give your channel a way to stay engaged during the downtime.

Current games included in the pack are:

Happy Tanksgiving

In this free-for all arcade game, everyone controls a tank on a battlefield free-for-all. It’s you versus 100. As a streamer, you’ll be commanding a super tank with heavy armor that can be controlled in real-time. Each of your viewers will command their own lightly-armored hovertank by using chat commands. They can kill you, or kill each other, but only one tank can claim victory.

Minesweeper 100

Why are we always minesweeping from a distance? Isn’t it about time we were actually there on the minefield with 100 of our friends, living or dying together, as a team? With Minesweeper 100, everyone controls their minesweeper on an active minefield, frantically trying to work together to clear it before a major earthquake triggers all the mines. Beware! A single mistake will cost you your life, and the lives of those next to you. This mode works well with a very small number of players, and gets even better as more viewers join the sweep!

Bombertown

The ultimate in 100-Player bomb-planting action! Control your bomber, surround your enemies with bombs, and be the last one standing, all the while collecting powerups and tightening the noose around your enemies.

DMCA-free music

With all the issues surrounding video game music DMCAs on streaming platforms, all the music has been either specifically created for the game, or licensed from the same indie artist (Couteau Papillon, who also did the soundtrack to Spaceteam), and is verified by SOCAN to be streamed without triggering a DMCA.

A Gummy’s Life

A Gummy’s Life

If the only thing they did was a carbon-copy remake of Gang Beasts with just a ‘splatter’ like they have for the punches, it would have been worth at least a dollar. There was that, and so much more, and my kids (7 & 10) absolutely loved it!

I find it way less boring than gang beasts with all the bot options and the much, much more interactive environments. Matches rarely last more than 1 1/2 minutes. A+.

Some comments from the children –- “I like that there’s more ways to die.”

Some comments from Dad — “I like that there’s bots out the wazoo, and that way I don’t have to pick one of the two children to go after and end up falling off the edge holding them.”

This is a very entertaining game, from the ragdoll physics to beating up your friends. However, it isn’t for everyone, and has major problems.

While I would still recommend the game, the game is not without flaws, which I think many wouldn’t be able to overlook. Most notably would be the large amount of bugs and glitches. Many maps have areas the players can climb out of, instantly killing them. Others have environmental backdrops the players can clip through. There are also many physics-based problems that could potentially throw someone off the map and ruin their experience. However, many of these glitches are funny enough to not cause any frustration.

You can be knocked out of your own combo, characters lack much difference between each other, and AI is easily exploited. It’s not a very fun game. The potential is there and its core loop is interesting but there is too little here for it to be recommended as is.

Nice idea and design, poor realization

The game can’t be considered as a finished project even if one overlooks the lack of content, because some fundamental features don’t work:

[olist]

  • AI in Practice mode doesn’t work: an NPC just stands still and meekly gets player’s hits. If it’s supposed to be so, then the developer should have added several options to adjust the NPC behavior like make it always blocking or jumping or performing a sequence of movements.* A player’s profile disappears after closing the game, that leads to disappearing of a gamepad custom configuration also. Moreover, the game doesn’t allow me to create a profile with the same name again although I don’t see it and can’t choose it.
