Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time

Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time

This is a good game. Made by Ex-Team Ninja Devs including SUPREME ADVISOR TOMONOBU ITAGAKI.

It’s the best Samurai Jack game and a hidden gem as an action game. It basically plays like a refined Ninja Gaiden, combining elements of NG1 and NG2, particularly NG2.

The combat is really good, both visceral catharsis impact and gameplay wise. It is also a challenge on the harder difficulties, especially a fresh save on hard mode, it actually took me 30 hours just to beat hard mode believe it or not. Samurai and Master Samurai are 2 completely different games so if you don’t want to suffer like I did, play on Samurai, if you do want to suffer and have a challenge that may or may not make you restart the level, play it on Master Samurai first time through. Light/heavy, dodge, block with a running block, parry+counter, grab/tech grabs, projectiles with finite use and such. More advanced techniques such as instant guard, countering unblockables (Yes you can do that) and on the fly weapon switching comes together in such a way it feels like a return to old action game form of better days. It has good enemy variety and great boss battles that challenge reflexes, dexterity, muscle memory and your understanding of the mechanics. It is linear adventure but there are tons of collectables, secret chests and secret fights along with a mostly well done scoring system basing you on time, enemies defeated, continues used and items used. the less items and continues used, the better the score, faster you complete the better the score etc. After completing the main campaign, you unlock an extra costume and mission mode. Completely hard mode will get you endless survival mode, all of which tests you knowledge of enemy patterns and your use of the mechanics and you have a lot of ways to play. People complain about weapon durability being a thing but people don’t ever go over the fact there’s an item called the “Heroic Great Beads of Durability” or something and makes that completely mute where your weapons will literally never break. You’ll actually want to break your weapons if you’re leveling up however as it’s the fastest way to get bushido spirit. The most annoying thing is collecting the various jewels in the game to help go through your skill tree. The desert oasis jewel only appears in level 2 and they change depending on the difficult and going through the skill tree is not great since you have to go in a specific order. You need to get stuff like “extra life when you die BUT ONLY ON EASY/NORMAL” before you can get to something like, actual combo routes or specific abilities such as a dodge to slow down time, it’s annoying.

I’m a HUGE fan of Samurai Jack. I remember not missing a single episode on Cartoon Network when I was a kid and it’s probably the most memorable cartoon of my life. I was craving for a Samurai Jack game back then and all I got was some flash games. I didn’t know Shadow of Aku or GBA game existed. When I heard season 5 was coming in 2017, I literally lost my sh*t. Just like I did when I watched the announcement trailer of Battle Through Time. I’m so happy that my favorite childhood hero finally got a proper game of his own.

Defect Process

Defect Process

This game is addictive and fun to play. It is a good fighting game with a fair amount of strategy. The 2D environment is deceptively simple but there are a lot of complex moves and a good amount of weapon choices. Every time you die, you try to figure out a better way to utilize the weapon or use a more effective weapon.

It seems like there was a lot of thought that went into designing the weapons and enemies. It was a lot of fun figuring out how to handle each enemy’s specific attack patterns with the different weapons. For example, using the teleport to pass through the laser wall or trying to time the stone form correctly to reflect the regular laser attack.

Defect Process shines through its singular focus on satisfying combat. It’s relatively short (around 3 hours to my first boss kill) and straight-forward (combat arenas mixed with light platforming sections), so there is not much else on offer (though it looks like there is much to come). But that’s ok because the combat feels really good.

Each weapon is completely unique, and really requires a new play-style to get the most out of. For example, the staff initially felt like a wet noodle that was largely fun for its ability to let me hop around like a mad man. But once you get to used to spamming and recharging the whirlwind ability, you can unlock an incredible amount of DPS (while still hopping around like a mad man).

Beat ‘Em Up

Old style beat em up game in story mode. Nice graphics and easy to control. Makes really fun!

Would like to see more characters and not just different clothing. And a 2 Player mode. This one could be cooperative or in an arena.

Until now, a good work.

Light Tracer 2: Bright ambition that needs some more work.

Light Tracer 2 is a Puzzle solving RPG that needs a lot of reworking for its core gameplay loop though conceptually is a great idea for a game.

Gameplay

Starting with the puzzles in game, they are for the most part really clever and well thought out. Some of them get really involved and take some consideration to find a solution, with some benefiting from using this second god type character to get a view of the puzzles and help you see things from a better perspective, other puzzles though are much simpler and often have exploits that weren’t intended by the player to do. While playing you are encouraged to explore the environments to get items for crafting recipes but more often than not it ends up being a redundant task as early on you aren’t a strong character so going out of your way to get these resources means you’ll fight creatures that out number and often overpower you meaning when you do kill the creatures you’ll often end up low on health and your reward is a often nothing useful to recoup the cost of the battle. While fighting enemies and doing puzzles you gain XP/Currency that you can use to level up your player, gain new abilities or progress the games story and that’s where things get bothersome. The biggest issue in the game is that your characters XP/Upgrade points are using the same currency for the progression of the games story, so it becomes a game of “do you want to level up, or unlock the next area?”, because of this you’re often just burning through the game by doing puzzles, getting just enough XP/Currency to progress to the next puzzle, then after finishing 6 puzzles you can either level up your character or go to the next island or optionally do the remaining puzzles on the island to get a small amount of XP/Currency. This quickly becomes a problem as most creatures/items on the map don’t give you anywhere near enough XP/Currency to balance this out. You are encouraged to discard the resources you gather as they all have a value of xp/currency you can recycle them for. Even if you do collect enough items to craft a health potion it will cost you 50 points of the xp/currency to craft instead of being a free crafting system it costs the resources and a fee. This seems like something that can easily be fixed just by adding a secondary currency for the main gameplay progress separate from the player xp/currency so hopefully this is something the developer can look into in the future. The combat in general is not that satisfying and seems more like a after thought rather than something that was fleshed out. Enemies attack patterns are just annoying and you’re often interrupted mid combo more often than not resulting in a a very unsatisfying combat system. Normally this would be remedied by blocking or dodging and using something like invincibility frames but this games block feature is locked behind upgrades meaning your only option is the dodge feature which is just a normal dodge with no invincibility frames and normally that would be fine but most creatures have at least one attack that you can’t space yourself far enough with the standard dodge. I think in general terms of gameplay there needs to be some QA as the core gameplay outside of the puzzles is just not that enjoyable when it could be fixed really easily by adding invincibility frames to the dodge feature and making the player not stagger so easily then also adding a separate currency/method of progressing the story than the currency used to level up the players stats/upgrades. There were a handful of bugs I experienced during my playtime and reported to the dev that hopefully will be removed before the game is released.
