How to say Goodbye

How to say Goodbye

Once upon a time on the other side

How to say Goodbye tells the story of a character recently turned into a ghost, lost in an unknown world populated by spirits.

In this narrative puzzle game, move the element of decor and the characters to guide the characters out of the liminal space between life and death in which they are trapped.

Help them find their friends who are prisoners of a mysterious wizard and accompany them on their journey to the other side.

Ghosts on a grid

The goal of each level in How to Say Goodbye is to guide your group of ghosts to the exit, symbolized by a door. To do so, move the scenery on a grid and make your way to the door.

But dark forces seem to be holding you back against your will. Lost spirits called spleens will try to prevent you from escaping the liminal space by blocking the way to the door.

Find your friends, avoid the spleens and find your way out of the liminal space!

Someday my ghost will come

Inspired by illustration and children’s literature (Tomi Ungerer, Tove Jansson, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Maurice Sendak…), How to say Goodbye deals with the theme of grief with kindness and sensitivity.

Still shocked by their recent passing, the ghosts of How to say Goodbye try their best to leave the liminal space they are trapped in. Together, they will have to discover how to mourn in order to accept their own death, and “move on”.

Spirit of Midnight

Spirit of Midnight

Spirit of Midnight is a charming adventure game. Play as a house cat who gains the ability to leave home and embark on a supernatural adventure after encountering a strange spirit. Befriend a badger and meet other adorable creatures along the way, all in an effort to restore balance to the forest and uncover the truth behind its mysteries.

Use and combine items in your inventory to solve situational puzzles in humorous ways. Sit back, interact, and be entertained. Professionally scored with original music and nighttime vibes. Controller play recommended.

The Pillar

The Pillar

In the words of James May: “No.”.

It’s a pity. The programming is competent. Good use is made of the Unity game engine. The environment is colourful and pretty, though completely ripped off of a well known game. Perhaps one could call it a tribute. I didn’t find any bugs, though I thought I did several times because the game design is a bit strange.

And that’s the problem. Numerous questionable design decisions spoil the game. It carefully explains how to solve a particular puzzle type, but presents a single use of that puzzle type which works differently. It features a bright, powerful, dangerous-looking laser beam … which in its first appearance shines right through where you have to be standing without harming you. There are a number of different puzzle mechanisms, one of which is so fast, and requires such a quick memory, that I cannot solve it without watching a playback outside the game. Things you change, change the environment with appropriate sound-effects, but you can’t see what changes because the game forces you to look away as it happens.

At first gland, the DEV is definately inspired by “The Witness”. The puzzles however start very easy and simple, but dedicated to be the same as all the others and yet slightly off. But when you progress deeper into the game, sometimes a bit more “challenging” the puzzles become.

The controls are a bit weird, but I could adjust it to a level on which I could work with. Same as for the sound, it was very loud at certain points. Music wasn’t constant, had to put other music in the background. Don’t like silent games.

You Must Survive

You Must Survive

I do not recommend this game in it’s current state. Upon quitting from my first play, I had to uninstall it, delete the steamapp folder for it, as well as locate a hidden folder under local files that had to be deleted as the game found itself stuck in a loop of requiring an update. This game doesn’t clearly indicate as to what it wants you to do for the first part of it, I ended up looking up a YouTube video of someone else playing it, in order to figure out what I had to pick up and put where. After ending this second play session, and being taken back to the menu, all of the options were unable to be click on, so I had to Alt+f4 in order to quit the game. I understand why this game is only $4.55, but do yourself a favour and put that money towards something else, as this is not worth it.

Here are a few issues I had:

  1. After leaving the game and coming back, the only thing in the main menu that worked was the “new game” option.

  2. Inside the house, I was able to ignore the monster and run through it.

  3. At one point, I lost the item (it was the lightbulbs) that I needed to progress.

  4. As soon as I pressed ‘u’ to go to night time, I basically managed to get outside immediately. It didn’t really seem like what I did before mattered.

  5. The ‘outside’ part of the game looks pretty bad imho. The monster just runs straight at you, you’re running through a slenderman clone where the slenderman is slower than you and the level is linear. I also couldn’t figure out how to pick up the gun. The only onscreen prompt I got was to press ‘e’ which caused a small message up to pop up.

Afterparty

Afterparty

I wholeheartedly wanted to like this game, but I can’t recommend it to everyone.

TL;DR it looks great, the premise is great, the voice acting is great, but it doesn’t feel great.

I’ll start off with some positives:

-I absolutely love the aesthetics. The artwork and the lighting and effects are fantastic.

-The environment is extremely detailed and there are plenty of background conversations to eavesdrop on.

-The voice acting is pristine, with a few exceptions.

-Meeting the Greater Demons was really cool.

Afterparty

Afterparty is an story driven, supernatural game from the creators of Oxenfree.

Story

The player controls Lola and Milo that just found out that they died and now have to endure hell for eternity – except there is a way to escape hell by outdrinking Satan in a drinking competition. This where the best buds decide to give it a shot and face Satan.

Personal Note

When I’ve heard that the creators of Oxenfree made a new game I was very excited to play it, unfortunately they decided to make it Epic exclusive for a certain amount of time. When it finally released on Steam, I waited a bit to just buy it during this year’s summer sale and I have to say that I really enjoyed playing through this game.

Atonal Dreams

Atonal Dreams

Atonal Dreams is an RPG reminiscent of classic console JRPGs: you roam around a field and through dungeons looting treasure chests, talking to NPCs, and engaging in (non-random) turn-based battles that pit your team against hordes of monsters. Grow your characters by masterfully using skills to alter modifiers, build combos, and either destroy your foes or convert them to your side. The game is heavily story- and lore-rich, featuring an often-silly cast of characters who each have hidden depths that are gradually revealed.

  • In the world of Alora Fane, the omnipresent miasma causes thoughts and feelings to manifest as monsters. These can be destroyed with weapons, or tamed using magic. Tamed monsters can be controlled as allies for the duration of the battle.

  • Skills can level up by gaining XP equal to the damage inflicted with them. Stack up bonuses by manipulating a variety of psychological stats for efficient growth!

  • There’s a strong focus on story and characterisation. Dialogue scenes use full models with nuanced facial expression shifts that that add an additional layer of nonverbal storytelling.

  • A quirky blend of absurd British humour and deep layered meanings and metaphors about the nature of mind and reality and characters’ hidden backstories and self beliefs.

  • No unnecessary padding or tedious grinding; the game aims to make a memorable mental mark without overstaying its welcome.

STORY

Alora Fane’s gods once walked among the people they dreamed into being, until they were slain - and the world itself wounded - by a defiant blasphemer known as Blight the Betrayer.

A faction of devout knights called the Seraphim emerged to maintain ordered civilisation in the gods' absence, while those who saw the gods' death as freedom from tyranny founded the Blight Wolves to live lives of defiant chaos in the wild.

Centuries after this cataclysm, Savitr - a legendary Seraph whose unusual purple skin and horns reflect the inner demons that haunt him - and his starstruck apprentice, Collie - a former Blight Wolf, eager to rise above her brutal past - set out on a quest to rescue Savitr’s scholar friend from an island of monks who gaze into the infinite sea of potential dreams beyond physical reality.

Savitr’s quest to bring light to the world to atone for his past sins will face challenges from the competing belief narrative of his fiery squire, and by facing their dreams incarnate, they will reveal the light of truth at their core.
